I purchased a porta-power system that looks identical to yours, about 18 years ago. I don't use it often, but when I need it, it's a must-have.

I saw it as one of those tools that could be a problem solver once in a while. If I worked on restoring old cars more often, it might be a common helper.

@@DudleyToolwright: I may have used it 5 or 6 times in all the years, but for the price, it's a must-have.

I have the Harbor Freight version. My spreader jaw does not have a 1/2 ton limit. Great to use when leveling the lathe. Been a great aid doing auto stuff, but nice moving bigger stuff in the shop.

My brother-in-law does as well. I am not sure what the capacity of his spreader jaws are. A higher limit could be really handy.

Gday Robert. That’s a very nice piece of kit you’ve got there. A very welcomed addition to any home machine shop. Cheers 🍻 Aaron

I have the Harbor Freight version also. Never had a problem with the cast iron. I've had it for around 15 years and use it regularly.

Excellent feedback, thank you.

I don't have enough knowledge, but I would agree on the cast iron. Although, most every bottle jack I have ever seen including for engine hoists, the base is cast iron. Maybe not over 20 tons, I don't know.

You make a good point about the bottle jacks. From my somewhat limited experience you are correct.

I have both , the over seas kit and a Enerpac set. The enerpac kit I found at a garage sale for 100.00 It is a 2000.00 + set ( not all there) I got it because it was 100.00 . Ive had the china ish set for 25 years. it works fine and have never broke any of the attachments. yes there is night and day difference in the 2 sets. not used much , but handy to have.

Killer deal on the Enerpac system! I suspected as much. Thanks for filling in the details.

cool tool there Vevor is just a importer for china stuff they are the online vesin of harbor freight but HF has lost there mins cuz Vevor is coming to tack there spot now cuz HF pricing has gone way to high and Vevor is cheeper for the same thing lol
@DudleyToolwright

Those are some excellent observations. As Harbor Freight has tried to go more mainstream, their prices have followed.

There are 4-ton versions of that set. I would want the 10-ton version, just because. For you and others who have a shop with capability, replacing the CI parts should not present a problem. For direct pressure or load conditions, CI is OK; offset loading, not so much. This or a similar set is very handy for a lot of uses. You are sort of a bull-in-a-china-shop, eh?
@evagu5811

This is a 10-ton version actually.

This set was a 10-TON set and they do have a 20 TON version on their website. As you say, I tend to be a clutz.

@@DudleyToolwright I should have said directly that 4-ton versions are available.

Well, if you’re looking for a well made tool, mostly, Vevor isn’t the place to go. I was looking for a fairly small stacker. The Vevor models had “great” ratings of between one and a half to two and a half stars. Let’s say those reviews were interesting. Some of their stuff is good. I just bought a 132 lb anvil, the black one, which is really pretty good. But I’ve had other things from them that fell apart the first time I used them. Some of these companies are annoying, like Banggood and Vevor, because they have no real products. They buy, at the best price, from anyone who makes the tool. So if a tool is reviewed one month, the tool supplied may be different the next month. The base of most all hydraulic cylinders is CI. But in a high quality model, the fingers are usually tempered steel. Doesn’t the manual tell you to release the air and to add fluid before starting. On the side of the pump cylinder there looks to be the fill hole.

Your points are well taken and absolutely on point. Harbor freight is the same as well. They often have 2-3 skus for the same tool depending on which one(s) are in stock. There did not seem to be any info on bleeding the system, but probably should have been. Air is definitely the enemy in hydraulic systems. Thanks as always for your helpful insight. Much appreciated.
