First official video from the 'safe house' location! Nautilus is advertised as a 'sub-nautical delay' and is clearly inspired by sound travelling through water.
If you're looking for a predictable delay that stays in perfect sync with your beats, you may want to look to Magneto, Mimeophon or Ghost. Nautilus could do a simple delay with all settings at minimum, but it won't do justice to the module. I think it's better suited for sound design. It can do amazing textures and soundscapes with the right sources, and it offers a very useful clocked CV output (sonar). Personally, I always ended up at the bottom of the ocean while patching Nautilus, and I had a great time making music for this video. It's not indended as a demo or walkthrough so I included links from Qu-Bit and Starsky Carr for more information.

You just make every module that you demo sound so good. Then I listen to a demo for the same module by someone else and they don't sound anywhere near as good. I would love to see a series of sound design videos from you, would happily pay/subscribe for them!

I very often like to listen to videos reviewing, discussing, demoing eurorack modules while also doing something else with my eyes, something inane like a phone game or a laptop game. Inane games. So it's taken me a relatively long time to start really watching stuff on your channel - I'm a "talking demo" guy, not a "no talking demo" guy. All of which is my preamble to saying you've got one of the top two three channels for this kind of stuff, and now I actually watch, read, and listen, and have to pay attention with my whole self. Love everything about what you do here.

Thank you for sharing this, your comment made my day. If I would be native english, I would probably do talking demos. But I am Dutch, we're used to subtitles and my 60 year old voice is not suitable for voiceovers. Not to mention my accent :). This worked very well for me.

Absolute great video. Excellent sounds and soundscapes. Was expecting the usual "beautiful" delay tones and was pleasantly surprised

I had ground issues from multiple power supplies (9) that I fixed by running a very thick copper wire to all the bus-boards. Wish I'd known this trick earlier. The ground connections provided via patch cables are not that helpful. The issues were various, intermittent and difficult to track down. I could measure a DC offset between racks from their respective ground.

Totally agree about the wish of the different resolution per delay line. It will be so amazing ! Nice video again ❤

Yes, it would be a game changer to have rhythmically related taps instead of eight layers of the same taps with 'spread'. But it will also be a challenge to code it. If it were easy, everybody would do it.

I really enjoyed working with this module, it's easier on my ears than Aurora, but I guess I need to try them both in the same patch :)

I swear you were going to start riffing on the “Echoes” intro at the beginning. Nice video, cool pedal. QuBit has put out some great modules lately.

It's funny how things progress while shooting video. I had to setup the ping during recording so it would respond to 1V/oct and cut it from the take later. I definitely did not plan it.

Gorgeous! And I completely agree with you about the "feel," both literally and figuratively, of hardware. Case in point, I know there's an Opsix VST that runs the same software, and that the unit is completely digital; but having the tactile controller, running the synth into a physical mixer, affected by analog encoders and more dynamic, physical controls... maybe it's entirely psychosomatic, but I find it's easy to walk away from a laptop, but hardware compels you to stretch physically outward, arrange knobs and sliders, and spend just a little bit more time rearranging, reprogramming, starting over just for fun instead of out of frustration. Anyway! This module sounds as good as it looks, and it seems to me the CV out makes a huge difference as to this module's versatility and use cases. It's a delay you needn't even use as an audio processor so much as a CV generator, and I think there's something really satisfying in that. I'm also really interested in your safe house rig; when you or, say, Andrew Huang or Colin Benders have occasion to limit your options, I'm always excited to zero in on your choices, see how someone assigns creative priorities when space becomes a consideration, whether in your case by relocation or say travel or touring. Great stuff!
@CinematicLaboratory

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, really enjoyed reading this. I guess I work differently compared to Andrew and Colin. I always confine myself to 2x104 HP 'systems' to trigger creativity and make smaller fully functional synths instead of one big wall where I can't patch the left to the right. As for my 'safehouse' case, it will change content often. This configuration has ES8 (to get audio in from the PC), Furthrrr Generator (dual VCO), Delta-V (VCA + function generator), BitBox (in case recording), Nautilus is a guest, Desmodus for reverb, X-OH for output, Erica LXR for beats (still learning), Ground Control for keys and sequencing, Ghost (FX) and Shuttle Control (midi and random CV). I could play live with this case :)

As slightly contollable and experimental this rather new delay module is, it's even fair to say it's the modular synth equivalent of Subnautica the video game - oceanic, danger at every corner, otherworldly, calmingly raucuous.

@@CinematicLaboratory Do we have to build a faraday cage to work properly ? or aluminium foil on everything ! Some people already find modular synths weird and crazy, with the Mel Gibson's foil hat , they will freak out :)
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory Год назад
@@blacksand. No. I don't think so :). We need to realize that we're surrounded by information moving through air at insane speeds. When a modular is accused to be 'noisy' it may not always be the module. What works very well is to have grounded mains.

@@CinematicLaboratory Have you tried using a dedicated output module? Something that can deal with ground loops. I'm using ADDAC710 which kills noise instantly.

Great panning in this, I was half listening half watching, is the panning from the nautilus or were your swinging the elements around?

Nautilus offers great panning, but I also used Furthrrr Generator panned left/right with two different LFO's. So I guess it's both :)

How do the 8 delay lines respond when a clock is inserted? All of them synchronised?
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory Год назад
As far as i could tell, no. The delay lines are shifted with dispersion and become blurry. When the delay is clocked, the other 'copies' get offsets, but it can sound unrelated. When set fully CW or CCW the overlap becomes a bit like a flanger. I am not sure about how it works, but this is what I heard.
@lukewillekens6229
@lukewillekens6229 Год назад
Thanks, I’m sure with a bit of tweaking there’s a few sweet spots where the timing of the delay lines doesn’t even matter.
