Quad Cortex vs Fractal FM9 - Which Floor Modeller Is Better Value for Money?

For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ Two of the newest Floor Modelers to the market, one arrived to much fanfare and marketing, and the other one was a nice surprise, but has been very difficult to actually get your hands on one...I think this is changing soon, so thought this comparison seemed about valid now? Do you choose the smaller unit, or the bigger one with an abundance of choice?

I think your analysis was spot on. Fractal stands alone in the depth of parameters that can be adjusted, and it's got a great sound. Despite it's complexity, the FM9 looks like it can easily withstand the rigors of Turing. The QC looks like they've hit the sweet spot of size and ease of use. Yes, the are some important things they need to improve on for practical use on Gigs. It looks a bit fragile compared to the FM9. The new Looper is a fantastic improvement. I really like that the QC can comfortably sit on a desk or floor and function well. Makes it more versatile.
@MOAB-UT
@MOAB-UT Год назад
FM9 can easily sit on a desk too. Really, a few more inches left and right, front and back will make zero difference. Also, unlike the QC, you can EDIT the FM's on a 32" PC screen, WIN! On the QC, you have to fiddle around with a small touchscreen. Very nice screen and rotary dials, but after 1 minute, no thanks. Also, just you wait. I think the next iteration of fractal is going to catch up- include Capture, Touchscreen and Rotary dials and even more power. Cliff will not be out done. He is 3 steps ahead of Neural. Neural makes world-class PI's but did not even bother to include any of them in their flagship product. Fail. Oh, did I mention, it costs nearly $2,000.

Why do you refer to "Cliff"? Who is Cliff? Is he a buddy of yours? Maybe to your surprise, a lot of folks use these units without a laptop. Maybe it is a generation thing. I grew up programming hardware synths, and thus I’m used to it. In fact, I love it. I hate using computers for more than absolute neccessary. It takes 15 mins to have it in your fingers, then it’s smooth sailing. I have both a FM3 and a QC. Both work flawlessly on their own. I understand you are fond of Fractal. So am I. But I’m not that narrow minded that I need to act like an insecure person bashing some product to make me feel better with my equipment of choice.

RJM PBC/6X Loop Switcher with a 3 good drive pedals, few midi delay, reverb, modulation pedals and Strymon Iridium is way ,way better way to go anyway. In reality we all use about 4 sounds: 1) Clean with some hair on it, 2) Crunch like AC/DC or ZZ TOP, 3) Hi gain for sustained lead solos 4) Metal . Everything else is time effects and modulation. I would argue that 2 things are most important for your tone: a) Equalizer , and b) Speaker/ Cabinet or for others Impulse response.

Hey John good day to you! What would you say about Quad Cortex vs FM3? I obviously get that great part of switching options are lost vs FM9, but I'm very interested in both form factors, low stage noise for the not so friendly sound guys and the ease of having ready to go presets. I do most of the tweaking prior gigs anyways and I don't tend to loop a lot in our band setting. Would like to have your feedback on it

I run my entire rig now (vocal, 2 guitar chains from 2 pickups, 1 percussive stomp /drum chain) off one quad cortex now in a tiny ABS custom flight case, where the lid lifts off It’s not too small or weak for live use. I dropped it on its corner from holding it on a stage; so about 15foot off the ground, the corner dented and nothing else happened. It’s pretty tough It’s definitely a fully usable one pedal rig on any tour

Interesting and thanks for making this. I just got a QC and have been enjoying seeing what I can do with it. Based on all the videos I watched beforehand, the amp tones in the QC are better than the FM9, but I didn't get a chance for a hands-on comparison. I agree on the "shortage" of delays and modulation for the QC, but so far what is on it for delays and reverbs are very useful to me. I haven't found a Chorus I really like yet though, and that's disappointing. There are quite a few captures and presets on the Cortex Cloud and so far, ones I have downloaded and tried I really like. I favor the UI on the QC over the FM9, that was my deciding factor, along with the overall tones. I am not sure that criticizing the QC's capture from the FM9 is really fair, either - it's not really meant to do that, but that it does, is impressive enough. It DOES capture amps and overdrives/boosts very well, and easily. The depth of features in the FM9 is impressive, but way more than I want to mess with. I like the approach of the QC; plenty to tweak and adjust, and you can always build or stack effects - and even amps and overdrives - to get to a sound/tone you want, but I just don't want to spend hours tweaking a tone that I'm trying to emulate from an amp that in real life has a few tone knobs and drive and master knobs, or an overdrive that in real life has volume, gain and tone adjustments! Obviously the modeler choices are awesome today, and like guitars and amps, we will all have favorites! Thanks again!

Axe fx is not analogue source... Axe fx might be good but it's still digital hence capturing a real analogue amp would have been more helpful. I mean we can capture any plug in with quadcortex and can be done but for this comparison, the capture of axe fx was not good idea. However good the capture might be.. it will not be 100%

@@chrischris7180 Both are digital. The point of algorhythms is that can be programmed to reproduce subtle details on any range, and respond as you want, likes plugin synths. I love all the amps and effects in the FM9, and the text above each button, but it’s just too big for me. The FM3 is smaller, but doesn’t have enough foot switches and lacks a few features from the FM9. Same thing with the Helix vs the HX stomp for me. I/O the axe wins. ease of use.. well you learn it and its fine with the axe. I did found some killer(!!!) sounds on the QC, clean, edge of breakup and overdrives. I think that even one of them might be "better" each one of them can make great sounds. if Neural DSP will start putting their plugins to the QC that will be great, but it seems they dont. the QC size is great. Having owned an FM3 and now the FM9 there is no comparison to the tweakability of these units to what I see coming from the QC. That being said, many do not need or want that level of control and just want a good or great sound without looking at a mass of controls that the FM9 offers. However the FM9 can sound really good with some of its standard presets without much of any tweaks. In any case, as far as the looper goes, if you are really into looping you probably will have a separate looper for far more functionality than either the QC of FM9 offer. The FM9 looper block is great at helping create a new preset/scene or adjust a current one. Would agree that the smaller footprint of the QC combined with its power would be an advantage to some. The FM9 units hardware edit controls are a bit of a challenge to learn and use while the OC seems simpler. However I have never really liked touch screen offerings but may not be an issue for others. The FM9's footswitch layout, switch display and versatility wins hands down. For now I am keeping the FM9 but this was an interesting comparison, thanks to John.

On can still present a totally Pro piece of work with a few real amps and pedals. The client cares only about the quality of the work not whether you chose the perfect Fender Deluxe for that music. The player usually has very limited time to get the work done and has little time or patience to choose from endless choices. Add to that most players decide which for example are the best amps and never chooses a different one as it feels like choosing second best. In short more is not more. I have an associate that has both the Quad and an Axe. He has found that he is always choosing the Quad as he finds like I said he only needs a few amps etc. and that he does not feel anxious or frustrated getting started on a project with the Quad. In the end the completed work done reigns supreme. The second best hammer in the hands of the best carpenter wins every time.

The only thing that is aberrant with Fractal (AXE FX3, FM9, FM3) is to spend a crazy amount of time pressing a lot of knobs, knobs, knobs...etc... to get a sound and it happens sometimes (even often) to do it in several times (4 x 3hours if you are a perfectionist like me) Moreover, there are only 4 channels for 8 scenes whereas there should have been 8 channels for the 8 scenes... quite simply. And finally, the sound gap between each preset changes is 600 milliseconds whereas on the BOSS GX100 it is totally instantaneous. I hope Fractal will improve this in the futur. agree ,the cortex feels more like playing an amp than any other modeller and I have been through them all.It is also the easiest to get a great tone out of quickly ,the helix especially would take ages to get a decent tone from due to too many options and then inevitably having to add eq to it,something I rarely need to do with the cortex. If you like to fiddle and don't suffer from option paralysis then the fractal is great but the UI is awful . Listening on you tube they can be made to sound the same but I found the helix always sounded digital to me in practice . It's great to have the options though for those who like to fiddle a lot and the helix and fractal are more mature products than the Cortex obviously having been around for much longer.I just have never found the need to have 38000 amps or 25000 different types of delay but some do.

I owned a QC and sent it back. I just didn't think it was quite "there" yet. I will own another some day I'm sure. I have never owned a Fractal unit but would love an FM9 if they ever become easily available. As for the comparison between the two regarding the amount of "stuff" on each one...I can't imagine needing 300+ amps. The differences in sound between the basic designs is so minute as to not matter. You're just not going to find 300+ different and usable sounds; indeed, most of us use 1 or 2 basic models and tweak them to sound like we always do anyway! Same goes for having hundreds of delays or reverbs. I'm not suggesting that Fractal should reduce the amount of "stuff", but some of it is redundant. I'm sure I will get flamed here by some, but my intention is not to belittle Fractal or Fractal fans. It's just an opinion which nobody should take personally.
@tanshaomala
@tanshaomala 2 года назад
A lot of people misunderstand the point of having hundreds of amps and effects. It's not so that you can use them all, its so that you know what whatever sound you have in your head, you know with absolute certainty that you can achieve it exactly. No matter how weird, obscure or otherwise "unobtainable" it may seem. Even the owners manual itself recommends you to just find the one or two sounds that you like and stick with it.
@SamuelAging

The only situation I can think of is if you are playing in a cover band that can play hundreds of different cover songs for weddings or whatever, and you have patches that perfectly mimic the studio tones of all those songs. That's the person that might want hundreds of amps and cabs to choose from. They do research and find out what the original artist used at the studio on the recording, and use that exact model in their Fractal. Another example would be a high level tribute band like Brit Floyd where they want to perfectly duplicate every tone David Gilmour ever used across the entirety of Pink Floyd's catalog. But yeah, the average person doesn't need that much flexibility, really.

Just some observational rambling. The capture section just after the 7 minute mark. I was curious about that so I did some test here (engineer, bored). Keep in mind this is just on what is coming to me after going through RU-vid but I would assume the original signal would be similar. Both of these units are bringing the played note and the primary overtone to the front, as if they are grouped, which is great, and then treating the other overtones as secondary objects. The difference it that the FM9 is creating more space between the played note / primary overtone and the secondary overtones than is the QC. Its as if the target audience is different. The FM9 signal would be better for a live gig. You would not clash as much with the keyboard player or another guitar player. The QC signal would be better suited for a recorded track in a studio as it would give the engineer a wider pallet to work with without the signal becoming to thin. 20:00 you said "flattens it out".. that is a good generalization of what is happening to the frequency curve being generated.. The QC is taking the bump sections of the note and primary overtone and bringing them closer to the other part of the signal being represented.
