Here's a video that explains how the secondary side of a Qjet works in general and what to look for if your carburetor won't run on the secondaries. Please do not complain about the talking...this is an educational video for GROWNUPS.
Like A/C and transmission work where part of the trick is to make the average person too scared to attempt it. I didn't know there were any dedicated Qjet people around anymore.
Tyler I just want to thank you for all your Quadrajet videos!! I have a pretty rare 71 Ford Torino 429 Cobra Jet.. and Ford used a very rare Quadrajet 2 years only 1970 and 1971 on a 429CJ only. Everybody seems to think quadrajets were used on GM vehicles only.. but not the case.. anyways if it wasn't for you and your videos I've never would have got this car running correctly.. I had the infamous Quadra bog.. and after a lot of playing with it I discovered my secondary doors/flaps, were actually a little bit too tight and taking too long to open up when I punched it.. anyways thank you for all the great videos!
Nicely done. Nothing sounds like that throaty, building roar as those silver dollar secondaries open up. Quite by chance, I have a number of vehicles with Edelbrocks and Holleys on them. And, also by chance, I have finally accumulated enough Q-jets to make the swap on everything and standardize. So I am boning up before returning to the Light Side of The Force after years in the shadows.
I love qjets. I put one on my olds 455 after the Holley the previous owner put on caught fire. I’ve put 30,000 miles on it and haven’t even had to tune or work on it once since the initial setup. Response, mpg, and the way they sound gotta love it.
I had rebuilt a q jet for a buddy’s motorhome with a 454, the secondary pickup tubes had fallen out, after I pressed them back in, i staked around the tube to help retain it, once I got it bolted back up, that motorhome would put you back in your seat when the secondaries were opened. I’ve rebuilt three.
Another good video Tyler, been watching your videos since you had the Fusion with the tranny problems and lived next to Lyle the Smoker 😂 Never any fancy crap or selling out, great channel keep it up 👍🏻
Thank you. I'm sure not doing T-shirts,stickers, donation livestreams or sponsorships has limited my viewership and revenue, but people on YT have gotten to the point that they just grind through the same subject matter every week. How many damn Ford trucks are there left to start??
Well, I've been building up to rebuilding the Q-Jet in my '87 El Camino, but a neighbor wants to buy it and I'm going to sell it... If I can solve some other issues. It's overheating, but I can't tell what it's doing because the temp gauge isn't working. It jumps to zero when I turn on the key, but stays there, no matter what. The problem is, I can't find the sending unit. It's not between the first two exhaust ports on the driver's side. It's not next to the thermostat housing or in the thermostat housing. It's not between the first two exhaust ports on the passenger side, and it's not back by the distributor. I'm pretty sure it used to work (but I don't drive it often and I'm getting old...), so I'm really confused. The previous owner replaced the 305 with a 350, and most of the smog stuff is in a box in the garage, as it was falling apart. Any ideas?
Tayor. maybe if you can get a diagram of a Bosch mecanical fuel injection. You can show the simalaraties on how the bosch system meters fuel, and that the quadrajets air doors function just like the bosch system sensor plate. Also, how the metering rods work just lkke the plunger [fuel control valve]. I belive your viewers may better understand what your trying to explain.
Thanks for the info. I have an 85 electronic quadrajet, would the secondary circuit be the same/similar? I cant seem to get the secondary bog sound or power when I floor it. I am aware, that year had the 7A intake heads which sucks but I would think I'd get some kind of extra power and some bog.... Maybe I could switch the heads to 5As or just ditch the emissions BS all together?
The emissions aren't your issues. The secondary side of the carb may be non-op for some reason. You can get under the hood and whack the throttle pretty hard and you should at least see the air doors open a bit. Those engines don't move much air, so the carbs are detuned on the secondary side. The air doors only open about 1/3 way and the secondary metering rods are sized to accommodate that. Those 7A heads are TERRIBLE. If you sit a 7A head next to a 5A, you will see that the 7A ports are half the size...HALF...of the 5A heads and all the 350 heads that came before. I wouldn't suggest it now because these engines are so old but you can actually hold a 7A 307 to the floor and it won't rev high enough to blow it up. You can get the carb working right, if it isn't, but don't waste your time trying to modify the secondary side of that carb unless you swap heads and all the manifolds.
Thanks for the reply. I guess theres not much I can do but I will say, though under powered, the car still has enough pep to get going. I will look into the secondaries of the carb 1st though.
