shponz: I carried the MAT 50 in Vietnam, and had one MAS Mle 1949 with the telescope...we shared that one for perimeter security when in the field...a very fine weapon, just like the MAT.....I am happy that the French weapons are available in the US.
You are almost right. The FSA Mle 49 did not have a bayonet. FSA Mle 49-56 did have one, as it is an upgrade of the former. This rifle, commonly named "49-56" by French servicemen could also launch a rifle grenade and had an extended magazine. It was extensively used during the Algeria war and remanded into service till the mid 80s. Several millions were manufactured. I have been trained with this riffle (and the MAT 49) as a cadet.
For the guys here who are not Francophones, This is the Fusil Semi Automatic Modele 1949-56. I know this for sure, as there is one sitting right here next to me in Alabama!! The FSA Mle 1949 did not have a bayonet, the Fucil a Repetition Mle 1936 did...There a lot of former French Weapons here, and we do collect and shoot them all the time...
