very cool. Here in the eastern sierras our quail occupy more open ground sometimes. I took 3 out of a covey of 45 or so with my .25 cal air rifle, and they just kept feeding. Amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Should've used a Dakota Fire Hole to cook with. Would've used less fuel with practically no smoke and better heat control.
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 4 года назад
When the ground is saturated with rain water, the Dakota fire hole tends to not be my go to. This is especially true when cooking on a gravel bar where the side walls of a hole will not retain their shape and are prone to collapse. I agree that we could have used one had we had the fire away from the river where alluvial gravels and silts give way to clay-loam which has greater structural integrity ... but hindsight is 20/20 lol. We definitely plan on using the fire hole and a few other fire lays and such in videos coming in 2020. Thanks for watching!

Oil those boots up. If it’s the sole that’s squeaking, try leaving them in a dry place(next to the fireplace or something). Unfortunately when boots like that get wet, the soles can squeak pretty bad.
@catchncookcalifornia1574

It's not the soles, but thanks! Working on the leather now!
@ror_sal

That’s good news then. The oil on the leather, especially under the laces and where the tongue meets the boot leather, it should help a bit. Love the channel man. Let me know if you’re ever in San Diego. We can do some fishing. I hunt the valley quite a bit also. And deer hunt every year.

Uhhhhhh dove and quail season are over 😬
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 4 года назад
General quail season is open here in our part of CA until the third Saturday in January, mourning dove closed the night before the video was uploaded and I always spend at least a week editing my footage before an upload (so this hunt was a week before that). For dove here in CA, there is an early season (Sept 1-15th and a late season Nov 9th- Dec 23rd). Quail are open from the 3rd Sat in October- the last Sun in January (in general, though some regions open and close sooner depending on the area and method of take such as falconry or archery). We definitely do not poach. That being said, thank you for reminding me to be sure that folks know that there are seasons under which these species can be legally taken. Thanks for watching! For more information on game bird hunting regulations please see the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's extensive pages on the subject here fgc.ca.gov/Regulations/Current/Upland-Game-Birds and also here cdfgnews.wordpress.com/tag/dove-hunting/

Squeeking leather: there's special leather soap and -oil, we use it for saddles, reins and horse riding-boots as well. Rub the leather with the soap with a soft cloth (will also clean the leather, get rid of all the dirt), use a clean damp cloth to clean, let it dry a bit, then a soft cloth for the leather oil or wax. Not too thick, it will soften the leather and keeps it flexibel. Leave it for a couple of hours and polish with a clean soft cloth. You can repeat this every other day, the oil part. Use the soap only to clean the boots, too much use of the soap can dry out the leather.

Can you give any recommendation for where I can look to find people to go hunting and foraging with in California? I am a newbie to hunting and have been looking at outfitters for my first game hunt, but also want to know more about where to go to hunt. California is mostly private land and I simply don't know enough people being that I have lived in the city most of my life. Been fishing and foraging for about two years now and want to step up my knowledge and experience. If you can provide any resources for where I can start looking I would definitely appreciate it!
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 4 года назад
Mike, this is a great question. It can be hard to find folks you want to hunt with as it is like making new friends, which of course relies on a great deal of trust ... especially when firearms are involved. I would recommend that you start by checking out this awesome program put together by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (link below). These "apprentice hunts" are designed for young hunters, mobility impaired, women hunters (CDFW has long tried to inspire groups that are historically underrepresented in hunting), and of course new hunters. Try this. I am sure you will learn a lot from some very experienced folks, and maybe you will find another hunter as part of the program that is also looking for a buddy. nrm.dfg.ca.gov/ApprenticeHunts/Default.aspx You also asked "where to hunt?" I would suggest that you search the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Forest (not national parks/state parks as hunting is prohibited), State Wildlife Areas, Federal Wildlife Areas websites for the region around you. You can start by looking at Google maps in your area. The portions that are green in color are public lands. Search those to find the ones that are open to hunting, then look up specific area websites to be sure what regulations are in place for those areas. You can also contact your local Department of Fish And Wildlife office, pay them a visit, and they will have way more info than me. Happy New Year and thanks for watching!

Good question! Typically it is a state law. Some states require it while others do not. Some private clubs may also require it even if the state does not. If one hunts in a smaller area with a lot of hunters, it is suggested even if it is not required.
