@Jotaro97 i thought that was where it transcends another mil shooter and becomes more oldschool yet horror-like in its tone, at least until you are rescued and the game repeats the same evil hq place four times in a row
i was expecting a "see the stars, serve your planet, join the marines" type recruitment ad when he first appears looking into space. then he turned round and my heart dropped out of my arse. ill never forget the first time i played this
0:40 Everybody had been warned not to try to rocket jump on the space transport Hindenburg, but Billy 'Backblast' Barrow just had to show what a cool guy he was.
I love this game, I think it's a worthy follow-up to Quake 2. God I just wish they would make a sequel. Damn it I hate it when games make cliff-hanger endings.
@@pug-aloentertainment3801 IMO it was good. Like, look at those guys static.wikia.nocookie.net/quake/images/5/50/Tank_Boss.JPG/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/485?cb=20110211104231 static.wikia.nocookie.net/quake/images/3/35/Glad_2.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/454?cb=20080803075532 You seriously think that Quake 4 stroggs look weirder?
@@pug-aloentertainment3801 Yeah, maybe that's true. But I guess the change makes sense. They couldn't look too threatening, otherwise we wouldn't separate them from the tactical Stroggs.
This game always fascinated me in that it clashes so hard with brilliant ideas and design choices against weird quality discrepancies like the chunky ultra low-poly planet the camera gets way too close to at the start and the dialogue that was clearly written in 5 minutes on the toilet.
Funny thing this intro, when I saw the soldier in that armour gazing the sky I began to think "wow there we have a warrior", but then when he turned round I realised that he was dead and it was only half a body... oh people of ID Software, please think it over!
@@panzer4391 It would be a good idea, and it would make sense as a part of the intro; in Quake II there was some kind of motivational speech (during installation) about invading the planet of the Strogg and conquering the enemy: the operation "Alien Overlord".
I am 23, and after 10 years of searching, I finally found the opening sequence that was ingrained in my mind as a 5 year old. The mutilated dead soldiers floating in space.... I always thought it was DOOM 3, but I was never able to find this scene there. Watching this, it's 1 to 1 with my memories from when i was a 5 year-old, I wonder why my dad though it let me play this game - I was too stupid to play it anyway, English isn't even my native language.
and says he killed a fake Makron, then Bitterman was captured and turned into a Strogg. That means by playing Quake 2 until the end and completing it, you still fail your main objective. Only thing Bitterman ever did was disabling the Big Gun.
@@MashupsByMandy Quake 4 isn't a retcon, what are you talking about. You know, it's people like you, that's the reason the game bombed, and we didn't get a sequel or an expansion. Quake 4 was an amazing sequel to Quake 2, it was modernized to the point, it was atmospheric and had a realistic war feel, but still kept the classic FPS cliche, of having your entire arsenal up your butt, and you could pull out the gun you wanted whenever you wanted. I loved that. If we exclude mods, this is my favorite game made in the ID universe. Yes, I said it. I think it's better than both Quake 2 and Doom. And I would kill for more games, set in the strogg universe, I like that way more than the Quake 1 universe.
This game's 15 years old but the intro is still amazing. I played Q4 first time it came out, I think its due a remake. Or, someone should make an Arma3 mod ;)
@@TheMrGREENRay Doom 3 was good enough, actually, but Quake 4 featured full-scale interplanetar war, so it was packed with much more action. Some people say that Doom 3, like Far Cry 2, was a tech demo game to try and show off the capabilities of a new engine, before making new projects
Classic. I can't believe this can now be considered "old school". Man, time flies. I remember skipping school and stealing this game from Wal-mart, den getting home and playing all day on my pc. Da pc version i mean.
I've been playing this game when I was like 11 years old. But it's only until now that I realized Lt. Voss actually referenced Bitterman (also Rhino Squad) during their landing prep
This game will forever be in my head. My mom bought me this game when I was 8 yrs old. Apparently she thought that this game was a “brain game” or educational game because it had a brain in the cover lol. Little she knew that this traumatized me at that time and I was terrified when playing it 😂
Is it just me, or did the Marines in Quake 4 take some insparation from the Colonial Marines? (What hasn't) but maybe these are like the Actual Military force of the univerce & the Colonial Marines are like Special Forces
+Zelousmarineinspace a lot of the human side of quake 4 is inspired by aliens. The transport you flew in on is pretty much exactly the same and the exit to the space ship where you flew out of is pretty much the same as the one at the end of aliens where the queen gets sucked out of
1995 i'll have you know, and I find it hard to believe you're 20. Most 20 years olds aren't this hot headed. Anyway, without having to say "this sucks, that sucks" doom 3 is brilliant due to the fact that it's probably one of the scariest games i've ever played. Compare it to horrors like dead space for example, doom 3 is a gold mine because they get the atmosphere just right. The halo series is just the same game as well as assassins creed, left 4 dead, GTA, Doom 1 and 2. Yet they're still good
I found this game by accident around 2009, was in cybercafe and i clicked this game and then i enjoyed this game for over 4 hours than playing CS 1.6 :d
with each door on the invasion ship at twice the length of a dropship, the invasion ship can be calculated to 2.25 km long. It is so large that it may be difficult to build into Sudden Quake, the mod I am working on
I want to play this game on Xbox series s so bad. I miss this game so much. I used to play it a lot back in the day. Hopefully, i.d software and Microsoft can make it happen. I know they brought Quake to the Xbox and Playstation as a remastered game. I really want to play Quake 4 on Xbox series s.
zulanio _ Top training doesn't mean you'll survive. Just look at the SPARTAN-IIs from Halo. Chief survived because he has literal plot arm- I mean luck. As for the other ll's, i gotta read the books for that
Well you can be trained but at the end of the day it all comes to you to follow it and sadly many soldiers in special forces fuck up and die it's like no matter the Training you will still die no question about that
Oh, well i apologize mister hipster. You're probably into all the retro stuff that all the cool kids do. I'll let you get on with your "food" games along with your poor punctuation. Hahaha...20.
I find it interested how this game had mo-capped animations, but Halo 3 2 years later had all of them made by hand and gotta say, it doesn't hold up too well in some of the cutscenes
1:21 This is the only accurate warpspeed termination I've ever seen on CGI including Star Trek. In all other sci-fi cgi, as they jump to warp speed, craft experiences spaghettification, which could make the crew well dead. But then there is ID Software CGI team, which really understands that while jumping in and out of transwarp conduit, one is observed as getting into a portal (aka pocket universe)
Jesus Christ, why the hell can no one touch down on Stroggos without crash landing first? And if the purpose of the invasion of Stroggos was to get revenge for the destruction the strogg invasion of earth brought, and after Bitterman managed to disable the planet’s orbital defenses, why not just bombard the strogg to dust? I just have trouble getting behind this concept. We are not fighting to get them to surrender, the strogg have no ability to do so at all. Why send troops to kill all the strogg off when it would be easier just to bomb the shit out of them?
A glassing fleet was not sent because of the fact that an organized Strogg force provided a potent air defense of the planet that would've simply torn through the fleet. Quake 2 and Quake 4 are both spent weakening Stroggos for eventual total eradication.
