Qualcomm has launched its new laptop processor, the Snapdragon X Elite. It features the new custom integrated Qualcomm Oryon CPU, with claims of up to 2 times faster CPU performance compared to Intel and AMD, and 50% more performance than the Apple M2. It can match the competitor's peak performance with just one-third of the power.

So, we now know a bit more about how the new Snapdragon X Elite compares to other processors: Single-threaded CPU performance: Oryon 3227, M2 Max 2841, i9-13980HX 3192 at 70% less power than the i9. The two Intel processors on the slide at 06:25 are the i7-1355U and the i7-1360P The 14-core processor at 07:50 is the Intel i7-13800H The Oryon offers 50% faster peak multi-threaded CPU perf compared to the vanilla M2. The integrated GPU at 10:48 is Intel's GPU in the i7-13800H The integrated GPU at 11:22 is AMD's GPU in the Ryzen 9-7940HS

I am cynical enough to ask for 3rd party verification of those Qualcomm numbers, being delivered in the release product. Too often the announcement is _not quite_ matched by the release product. Even if the release product has somewhat lower performance, and higher power demand, it does sound like a good step forward. Unusually for the people commenting - I would prefer to see this chip in a computer (preferably a tablet but if not a laptop) using the Linux OS. To show that I am truly odd; I would love to have a small format single board computer using this chip for a silent desktop and media use!

This is very unlikely to ever happen. Intel, AMD and NVidia are all not stupid and continue developing their GPU technology. They have access to similar manufacturing-processes. A SOC integrated, maybe 60W GPU will never be able to achieve the performace of a dedicated GPU able to use up to 10-times the power. So you may get SoCs able to run games.... but never on the level of dedicated GPUs. But maybe you don't need that for your game or your resolution - not every games needs a 4090.

It is a way for intel not to simply have better multicore performance but to have better multicore performance while keeping thermals and power under some control. Intel needs that a lot more than this chip because they have issues with their chips consuming too much power and getting too hot. i was expecting and awaiting that. i think microsoft has got to choose where to go with windows as it is still the OS of creators and gamers when not into apple - x64/arm/risc for the long term. i even think that intel with the 15 series - which is that massivly different - will be the last chance for x64 from a microsoft view. arm was a target for MS since the first surface hardware and the watts per power - combined with the media-specific hardware-encoders (see apple or intel arc) has to bring a big change in x64 or it will all end on arm or risc. at this time we are at a crossection... but in a few years our known x64 standard will be changed to sth. else. thanx for upping your audio levels finally in the video now - its really hard on some devices to listen - compared to other yt-channels or general content. no problem on a desktop ofc - but in my car i was lost with some of your videos. and still: gary for president (i write that since you started the channel - and i gdamn mean it :P even if you are in the UK) cheerz from germany mate

IF. Qualcomm are to be believed, this should compete with 13900H while drawing less than half the power. That is huge, but it is curious they didn't showcase single threaded performance. I would like to see this compared to AMD 7840u as it is in the same power class, the elite will likely win in arm optimised apps but I wonder how small the deficit will be in x86 tasks. All in all, excited but disappointed it won't be releasing sooner.

They did show single core performance. According to their numbers, the Snapdragon gets 3200 points in single core while the m2 max gets 2800 and the i9-13980HX scores 3100 ( Geekbench 6 scores) . If those are true then it's a pretty amazing chip

@GaryExplains how likely do you think it is that this move from Qualcomm will spark a wide OS adoption? And in 10 years time everything, from laptops to cloud datacenter servers, will be ARM?
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 7 месяцев назад
ARM is already prevalent in the embedded market (with Cortex-M processors), and in the SBC market (like the Raspberry Pi). It is already a practical monopoly in smartphones (Android and iOS). It is making big progress in the server market with all the big cloud providers including Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle offering Arm based servers. Apple's Macs are now exclusively Arm. All that remains to be conquered is the tradition x86/Windows desktop/laptop market.

Why couldn't we get E-cores by an under-clock and under-volt? Is the device running on battery? If yes - turn off 8 of the 12 cores and run 4 cores at 2.5GHz. Did the user just run a high-end task? If yes - crank it up and ignore the battery until we hit 40% charge.

@Henfredemars
@Henfredemars 7 месяцев назад
Windows on arm works great. The problem is once you start downloading and installing applications that aren't designed to work on arm. That's not so much a Windows problem as it is ecosystem and heavily depends on what programs you wish to run.
