It's wonderful to hear Carolyn Ellis speak in person; so many times I wish I could connect with the writers that I read so much of. "Closer to the way we share stories" - it's so true. That's what we should all be striving for. Thank you for sharing.

It is fascinating how Carolyn Ellis describes what actually reflexivity is: "...being tuned into the voices in your head... these voices are coming from culture, relationships and ways to see the world... not listening to the loudest voice only..." I really loved this insightful definition... Thank you!!!

After watching this video again, i can't help to make the conection between the characteristics Carolyn Ellis mentioned about qualitative researchers and Carl Rogers "Person-centered therapy", being reflexive and truthful reminds me of the crongruence, unconditional positive regard, emphaty that Rogers defends. I believe that if this conditons are present in the qualitative reasearcher, he is in the good way to change people lifes through is researches.

Really liked how Carolyn made sense of how she see's what 'being reflexive' means to her and also her comments about compassionate interviews. Really gave me something to reflect on for my study.

How many times we dont think twice before we open our mouth and let the words get out? maybe now, after listening Carolyn Ellis speaking i get the light, maybe in that moment i was just letting all the voices talk unless just listen the highest, maybe i´m making a quicly resume of all and take the considerations about everything i "heard". Sometimes we just time a few seconds to understand if that was the correct thing to say, if that few words doesnt go to hurt, can i say in a hurtless way? can i say or respond in a better way without hurt? can listen all that voices and choose that one who´s more attentive and friendly? I think we can change a lot of things if we change the way we think. There are something here that i can really feel, cause when Carolyn said that she need to get closer and delevop a friendship, work together with the people to feel what they feel, that make sense to me. That´s not equal, but, when i was reading a book of Nicholas Sparks, the best one for me, if i just get my focus to what i´m doing, i almost can say thai in that moment i´m living the story, if he say that the charater is on the beach and feels the sea breeze, for moments i feel it to. Or when i was listening music i get in the music and feel every word the singer give us. We need to have the capacity of feel like the others to try to understand what hey really have to trasmit us, we have to try to dress their skin, to pass by what they pass, we have to be emphatics with, friendly, we have to share love, because when we do something with love the result will gonna be the better. Minha visão sobre pesquisa qualitativa mudou muito depois destes videos, muito instrutivos e educativos. Focam muito bem a importância da pesquisa qualitativa e o quão humana ela consegue ser, com riquezas de detalhes e experiencias. Excelente.

Thanks for this interview. I am going to use it in my social work cross cultural qualitative research class this afternoon as we talk about reflexivity and they prepare for their interview projects.

I showed it on Monday up through minute 12+ because I wanted them to do their own debriefing. I reviewed Evocative Ethnography this summer for QSW and really loved it. I also watched Behind the Wall and dug deep into some of her work. Do you have other qual researchers recorded?

Hello again, yes we have some wonderful other interviews with qualitative researchers Tony Adams, Marcelo Diversi, Ken Gale and Kim Etherington from the last series, and soon to be available we have Alec Grant, Durell Callier and Domingue Hill and Art Bochner. If you have any other feedback, or if your students felt they were able to leave comments it really helps others looking at the films with their work/research and studies, understand if there's not time. Do you visit the congress of qualitative inquiry? best wishes Kitrina

I saw a wonderful film that some of Carolyn’s students made - it was a reminiscence peace but acted by young people. Does anyone know where I can find this? Thankyou !

I am studying film currently. Is there a definitive example of Qualitative Research in this medium? And under what "umbrella" of methodology does Qualitative & Quantitative live under? Perhaps Thematic...or Ideological? Thx! much, - MG in Vancouver, Canada
@kitrinadouglas2990

Hello "social motion media", how long have you got? I think for us quantitative research (the hint is in the title quantities, numbers, stats) is liked philosophically with the positivist, post-positvist paradigm where the researcher looks for a singular truth. Qualitative philosophically (you might want to watch the art bochner qualitative conversation as he talks about this) comes from a need to bring meaning, and therefore truth is context dependent, changes across context, and linked with a whole load of other issues including research position/power, ethics. The methodological umbrella would be feminist, critical, social constructionist, narrative and arts based methodologies. Hope this helps, Kitrina
