Tips for beginners hiking Quandary for the first time. I quick collection of views, thoughts, and ideas I had from my first hike up Quandary. I climbed the peak on August 11, 2020. It was my second 14er and my first 14er hike. Gary Henry planned and led the trip for Michael Miley and me.
What tips would you add to the list?

Thanks, Todd. I'll be doing my 1st 14er in August 2022 and will remember your tips. Like how you outlined the various sections. Good tip about a bio break!

Good information for future Todd, especially the potty break. That has happened to me before. We are going back to hike the back side of Seneca Rocks in WV. It is pretty steep also. My wife want to challenge herself to climb up the back side with me. It's not a 14er by any means but it is one of the greatest natural attractions in the mountains of West Virginia.

It's been over 20 years since I've been to West Virginia. I'm thankful you keep sharing so much of the natural beauty around you. I'll have to get back there soon. I'm looking forward to see you hike the back side of Seneca Rocks.

One of the easiest 14 I climbed while living in Colorado .... that said I was in fantastic climbing shape and had all ready climbed Capitol and several Mountain pass hikes of 10+ miles

Man, this one is sketchy in the ice and snow. Had to turn back above the tree line this morning but the views were amazing.

Coming from sea level all my life I came to Colorado and attempted to do this. I'm a fit guy but boy that altitude kicked my butt. Once I got past the middle part with all the switchbacks I was pretty much dead and could barely breathe. Still pushed through all the way to the top but it was the hardest hike I had done. Even just sitting at the top the altitude was getting to me. Definitely Definitely will get more acclimated to altitude next time

Do you have a list of supplies and things you brought with you? I’m doing it this summer. Want to be prepared.

My next ones were Greys and Torres. Sherman is a good easy one too.

I call that last slope the wall of pain. It doesn't matter how many other 14ers (30 unique now) 3x on quandary. It still kicks my ass.

Yes, we had a cooler sleeve that fit in our backpack.

Please remember that the ecosystem is fragile and it’s important to stay on the trail. Don’t forget to donate to the CO Fourteeners Initiative!

Todd. How long did this peak take? Good for a 10 and 12 year old?
@ToddChandler

Took us about 2 hours. I think it would be great for that age. Here's the Strava data on our ascent: www.strava.com/activities/3899647600

Did the altitude get to you?

I was fairly lucky it did not. Certainly, I was short of breath, but no head aches or other issues.
