This video features some of the work going on by Andrew Margenot and his research team in the area of phosphorus losses to the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, the Gulf hypoxic or "dead" zone is largely blamed on fertilizer losses coming from farming. Margenot's research is testing the
hypothesis that a significant portion of phosphorus losses from
Illinois are not from agriculture but from streambank erosion. The EPA is mandating a 25 percent reduction in phosphorus losses in our state's watersheds by 2025. Margenot is testing the feasability of that timeline, given the legacy effects of streambank erosion sedimentation.
