In the near future, there's a good chance quantum computers will be a game changing technology for humanity. The industry is still in its early stages, with computer scientists around the world as well as technology giants such as IBM and Google working to develop them. So what exactly makes them different from our current computers and mobile devices? Jessica Pointing, a PhD student and researcher in quantum computing at Stanford University and Forbes 30 Under 30 alumni, explains the basics.

With normal computers even though there is a lot that can be done to make the transistors too much smaller at this point, isn't there still a lot of room to go back and redo transistor pathways to more efficient designs to still greatly increase computer power? Aren't the pathways largely a jumbled spaghetti mess that just got smaller and smaller but not efficiently designed architecture?

By having bits in superposition, they can simultaneously collapse onto a single solution in any given algorithm. Meaning that Algorithms that take multiple attempts to solve can be done in one attempt. And there are a lot of complicated Algorithms in many different sectors and industries. For example protein folding, it's a very complicated process that basically controls our physiology and being able to simulate its process quickly by a quantum computer will allow us to have a deeper understanding of it and eventually lead to the elimination of many diseases caused by genetic defects. Hence, having a powerful enough quantum computer allows u to solve those complex problems by solving their Algorithms instantly.
