Here is a post-conference conversation among the organizers of the "Physics of first-person perspective" conference, 2022, produced in a collaboration between Essentia Foundation and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Vienna (IQOQI-Vienna), of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Although this conversation took place just after the conference, it serves as a tantalizing introduction to the themes discussed. Videos of the conference's presentations will be available on this channel in the course of the next weeks.

You guys are doing immensely precious work, especially by building bridges between spirituality, philosophy and physics in a non-biased, non-dogmatic manner. I admire this very much. This is utterly important for building a world governed by openness and compassion.

Great conversation! Bernardo is the most important philosopher of our time and I think it was a good idea to get together with the Nobel prize winner on Quantum Physics to discuss and support each other's ideas, very helpful for today and everyone. Thanks for uploading it! Specially good for a musician like myself to be watching this video from Vienna. Glad to see the forward motion from Essentia Foundation.

This 👍👍. Finally a discussion with right amount of rigor. Personally, I'm aware of the fundamental issues and don't need to have explained over and over.

There is also a tie in to Evolution here. why physical measures are relevant to the observer, we have evolved to observe variables that are relevant, to us and to our survival. So we only percieve the parts of psi ''objects'' that are both relevant, and currently in direct relation to us obviously we are not perfect, so we can't see or sense radiation for example but the point is the same even if we are not the perfected outcome of evolution just yet

Bernardo Kastrup I curious because I recently discovered your work I only read 2 books (Idea in the World and Science Ideated) but I also discovered your blog about PBS Spacetime video about Quantum mechanics is it possible you can make a blog or video about Sabine Hossenfelder video of Quantum mechanics and consciousness and is the universe not real? Because she use the same evidence you use (Bell's Theorem and Wingers Friend) but goes the opposite conclusion.

@MeRetroGamer

@@gamingfan197 I used to hold a reductive atomistic view of the world since I have memory, it was grown as something intuitive as I started reasoning as a kid... With time and as new experimental information, data and other kinds of considerations about our nature came to me, it brought incredibly untenable inconsistencies and paradoxes into my reasoning, creating a lot of complex blockages, and even with all of that it was hard as hell to "step out" of that view. It was almost impossible for me to truly understand how the universe may not be reducible at all, and how it may not be made of "fundamental parts". It was clear to me that under all those patterns and abstractions there should be a fundamental layer of "stuff" that accounted for everything. Quantum fields seemed a nice explanation, but it still felt very abstract. So quantum field theory shaked my head and said "hey, under this botton layers there's still another fundamental entity of "void" wich performs spontaneous and completely random fluctuations". And then I suddenly realized, "hey, that's all we really have, "patterns", all the way down to the bottom level of reality where reduction is supposed to lead, reality must be about patterns that build up over patterns that build up over fluctuations". At that point I still held a reductionist view, but it wasn't atomistic anymore, and I started to consider that some top layers of abstraction, even if their behaviour is at some extent statistically determined by lower layers, it's not fully determined because of the primordial "randomness", and I accepted the idea that those top layers can indeed have its own causal power over the lower layers in some way making for the possibility of "self-engineering". And because of that I started to entertain the idea of a fundamentally mental existence. Then somehow, a few years ago I fully switched the perspective, and guess what, all the inconsistencies, paradoxes, "hard problems" and cognitive blockages just disappeared. There's still a lot of mystery, but in a sane way, because now I realize that I was all the time just trying to force an understanding under a very biased set of assumptions. Now I can see the data with naked eyes and try to understand it in new and completely different ways, which allows for a more transparent and clean reasoning. My current metaphysics are about an holistic, irreducible universe where everything is truly interconnected. What are the objects which are connected if there's no "parts"? None, interconnectivity is just a way of framing how patterns and interferences happen within their own relativistic frames of being. Agnosticism and skepticism should be on top of our biases and ideas, not of the data. I strongly recommend you the interview with Dr. Iain McGilchrist in this channel, it's splitted in 2 parts and it's about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
@gamingfan197
@gamingfan197 Год назад
@@MeRetroGamer I am familiar with Iain McGilchrist I only read The Matter With Things vol 1-2 but I still hesitate to adopt a non-materialist view I'm going to make a video for a reductive physicalist approach to consciousness (including self, personal identity and qualia) but these new studies of Bell's Theorem and Wingers friend only disprove local realism not Realism in its entirely this is why most physicist are adopting nonlocal realism and other forms of realism are still on the table like common sense realism and participatory realism let's hope in the next 70 years which the problem of consciousness can be solved and let's see if realism is rejected.
@MeRetroGamer
@MeRetroGamer Год назад
@@gamingfan197 Common sense is usually unconsciously biased and it also makes for a huge wall over analytics. I think it is our biggest barrier when we're trying to understand the deeper layers of reality. We need to be careful about it and try to scrutiny everything, every thought, in its most intimate details. About common sense realism. _"If there are certain principles, as I think there are, which the constitution of our nature leads us to believe, and which we are under a necessity to take for granted in the common concerns of life, without being able to give a reason for them - these are what we call the principles of common sense; and what is manifestly contrary to them, is what we call absurd."_ It is a manifest of faith in our human bias.

@Hermetic7
@Hermetic7 Год назад
If your simple answer is that this is all intuitive in non-dualism and just all falls into place as an observable when one is a non-dualist in the process of realization, and is cemented in place upon realization, then I agree with you 100%.

We believe that spontaneous processes in nature are something that does not require any labor. This a priori puts science in the rank of religion. And if: "God does not change the rules he once chose." (Socrates), then "does not change" obviously means that he also maintains the operability of these laws over time? {By the way: "Did God have a different opportunity when choosing fundamental constants?" (Einstein)}. Indeed, when, for example, we consider (elevated to the level of one of the most basic laws of nature phenomenon) the transfer of heat from a more heated body to a less heated one, we are not looking for a cooling device and, moreover, its power source… "The best leader is an invisible leader." (Laozi)? P.S. Any measurement of a physical quantity involves some interaction between the measuring device and the object under study. In this case, not only the object under study affects the device, changing its state (due to which measurement becomes possible), but the device also acts on the object under study, changing its state to some extent. Thus, in the general case, the observer is an evolving (- when measuring, his state changes), researcher of the "spontaneous" evolution of the Universe. That is, the result of the measurement is a change in the state of the measuring device; a change in the physical state of the observer; and, finally, a change in the intellectual state of the observer (+ a change in the intellectual state of everyone with whom the observer shared his results). In the global case (the "spontaneous" evolution of the Universe), the physical and unconsciously-intellectual state of everyone changes, even when he does not conduct observation / measurement.

When I listen to Bernardo and see how he has grown since his interviews with Evita a rueful smile appears as I assimilate what he is elucidating. As he says here Idealism has been around for a long time. I would like to see him write more books on the subject one on Bishop Berkeley who many consider to be the great grandfather of quantum physics and an A to Z compendium of Idealism listing the important figures in its history and its different flavours not forgetting the East, especially the Indian Advaita Vedanta school where everything arises in the Mind of Brahman and Brahman alone is ultimately real, the phenomenal transient world is an illusory appearance (Maya) of Brahman and the true self, Atman, is not different from Brahman.
