Appreciate all of your consistent posting of homeschooling videos...especially since you have high schoolers!

We also got behind in quarter 2. My two oldest ended up adding a speech class from a technical college in town that was 9 weeks long and they had to finish up their credit from study abroad this past summer to Costa Rica. They basically spent their entire time on those courses. Today is also their last day of a computer course they took at the high school in our community. 🎉🎉🎉so glad I don’t have to drive anymore everyday for that course. It was a lot so we are looking forward to more home days and getting back to our regular subjects. Such as life…

Thanks for sharing. It's so good to hear other high school parents talk about what they are doing. We had to switch up our calculus curriculum! Which was a little bumpy.

That is worrying about Shormann math because my son is doing pre-calculus right now.

At some point (when I have time), I'll have to go back through and see if they fixed the things I reported. Until then, I'm taking a closer look when I review her grades for assignments.

She can learn the unit circle!!! It’s not to be memorized, it is to be understood! And when it is well understood, you can essentially quickly re-derive the components you need to know very quickly. If she plans on taking calculus two at any point in college, then it is crucial for her to understand it. If not, then a reference of how to use it is fine. But that’s where a gap of understanding the actual math will start to grow.. because if the functions she’s using references the unit circle, and she doesn’t understand the unit circle, then she’s not understanding the function. She’ll be able to solve the problems procedurally if she has good enough pattern recognition, which is likely, but if she’s wanting to actually KNOW how to think mathematically, it would benefit her to learn it. I do understand that’s not everyone’s goals at this level of math though.

See the 8 minute RU-vid video by Andrew Borne called “Understanding the Unit Circle, FINALLY!” to see how straitforward it actually is. It doesn’t actually take a long time to learn. I had to teach this to myself at some point as a student also, and once I knew it well enough to draw it out without a reference, everything made a lot more intuitive sense. I still used it as a reference sometimes, but that was only for speeds sake.

I’ll show her that. She most likely will not need calculus for the degree fields she is going into (at most she needs to do statistics and algebra, the latter she can test out of). I had to take through Calculus 3 for my chemistry degree but knowing how to do the math and teaching it someone are not the same. I was hoping the shormann course would have gone through the topic of unit circles more throughly but it’s one of the areas we are finding are not as well covered. Thank you for the video suggestion though! I hope it helps her with it

Whatever is going around is so yucky. My house was sick right after Christmas, we are still trying to rebound from it.

Just last night one of our basketball teams had 5 boys out sick with the same thing at once. My son ended up playing both a JV and a varsity game since so many were out. Hoping since we dealt with it in Nov and Jan we’ll be in the clear in our household the rest of winter. 🤞🏻
