One of the things that really helped me when my oldest graduated from high school was realizing she was so ready for the next season in her life. I bet you will see the same thing in your daughter next year. It made it so much easier to let her go because this was always the end goal and she was so well prepared because of homeschooling. She jokes that she frequently offers "adulting" classes to her college friends because so many are unprepared and have struggled with the transition to college. There have been plenty of challenges, but she has grown up so much this year and that is pretty exciting to see.
I've always found the BEST book choices on Sonlight and Heart of Dakota's book lists. They have them divided up by level and age, so you should easily be able to find a bunch of titles she'll love. As a side note, I get you on the looming graduation feelings. I'm preparing to graduate my fourth (out of five kids) in another month. ❤
📚Check out Generations “Literature sets” and books. Lots of options on there. Plus the “Worldviews in Conflict” high school literature set looks great too 😁
No home school blues for us this season either. We took a week off for Spring Break as well and did some fun stuff such as Sight n Sound in PA and seeing Kung Fu Panda 4 in theaters. Are the courses Christian worldview from GCU? Looking into classes as well. I am purchasing curriculum as well now--only bought TGTB for now though. Next is Notgrass, ACE, and Masterbooks.
The classes she has taken like English haven’t had much to say about worldview. Her psychology class had some faith elements but again presenting basic psychological theories was presented as just that. Theories. They did discuss some gender issues in that class. If you’re wanting sound theological teachings GCU isn’t for that. But if you’re wanting a larger college with many program offerings that has a transferable options that won’t necessarily be antagonistic toward your child for their faith than it’s good for that. Each professor has added or not varying amounts of faith to her online classes. Also I think in person as opposed to online would also be different.
I love your videos because I have 6 kids all under 9 years old with twin 7 months olds. So, seeing a mom of older kids have monotony gives me hope 😂 I have no idea what will happen from one second to the next or if the twins will sleep through the night. We love it and I know one day I will miss this chaos but I also look forward to these older years, because of you and your beautiful family. I am learning sooooo much from watching you over the years. God bless!!!! ❤
Do you suggest an order for any of the science units for the good and the beautiful? Like you would think it would be beneficial to do one before you do the other?
Books your oldest daughter might like: - After The Hunger Games series I read the Divergent series by Veronica Roth - Little Women, Little Men, and Jo’s Boys by Louisa May Alcott - Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meisner - The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin If she enjoys reading biographies of Christian heroes: - Being Elisabeth Elliot by Ellen Vaughn (I think you have mentioned before that you also read that) - The Insanity of God by Nik Ripken - Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot by Elisabeth Elliot - Jungle Pilot: The Life and Witness of Nate Saint by Russell T Hitt - Defying Jihad by Esther Ahmad
Ashley, would you be willing to do a video about your daughter’s Highschool classes/electives? I recently heard you say in a video that she could technically graduate this year. I’d be, as I’m sure other would be too, interested in learning more about the classes that she’s taken like electives etc. I’ve watched your curriculum videos so I have an idea.. but I guess I’m struggling with the idea of most homeschool curriculum being a full years worth of work where as public Highschool is broken up much differently. They aren’t doing math all year long. So how do you get enough credits in if they are doing more in depth work than a typical public school kid. I hope that makes sense… it would be so helpful to us mamas who have kiddos entering Highschool in the near future.
Has your daughter tried Nadine Brandes? She is a Christian author. The books are YA, but I enjoy them. They don’t feel like teen drama like some YA books. My teen daughter enjoys them too. 😊
For what it’s worth, my oldest daughter (and I) really loved Howl’s Moving Castle (*not* the movie 😂) by Diana Wynne Jones. There are two other books in the series if she enjoys that one.
Yes the total mix of emotions on graduation! Our oldest is a sophomore in college and our 2nd graduates in a few weeks. We have 6 more after so it makes it a little easier on the sadness but it hits strong some days. I made an album of pictures of him from all his years and it was pretty hard to see the little boy becoming a man. 😢
Two authors my 17-year-old daughter loves are Pricilla J. Krahn and Given Hoffman. Both ladies are homeschool graduates and their books can be bought Amazon.
She loved the Inheritance Games series, Christy Miller series, and The Selection series…and then she hasn’t read these but they are on my list to buy after I read the parent Info thoroughly lol - Naturals series and Shatter Me series. She also liked Hunger Games and Divergent but I feel like you said your daughter already read those?
My daughter is the same age as your oldest and loves the Tales of Tarsurella series by Olivia Lynn Jarmusch. Never thought of a field trip to the radio station, that sounds so fun!
Love your updates. I have followed you since the beginning and it’s so cool to see your progress! I started watching because your youngest and my oldest are the same age and I also have 2 boys and 2 girls. As far as book recommendations, are you all into fantasy? If so she may like Throne of Glass series. Emily Wildes Encyclopedia of Faeries is also very good and fairly clean.
These are pretty popular, so I would guess you and your older daughter have heard of them, but the Green Ember series and the Wingfeather saga are fantastically written. The suggested age might be younger, but between the plot and the strength of character and failure and overcoming... A+. I know many adults who have thoroughly enjoyed those series. Also, Anne of Green Gables and sequels. Timeless and sweet. Historical fiction abounds. Explore authors like Lynn Austin and Angela Hunt. Elizabeth George Speare wrote highly enjoyable books including The Bronze Bow and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. She might enjoy reading biographies on people she admires? From history or contemporaries! Another thought would be to do a search on books she has enjoyed, as similar and related books will often be recommended. This done with discretion, of course.
Yes! Love videos like this. It’s like listening in on a homeschool conversation I would have w/ my homeschooling friends. Another way of bouncing things off of each other. Learning what has worked or hasn’t. Plus just learning about other things that are out there for homeschoolers. Sharing life together. I appreciate you very much 🤗
Masterbooks is having their sale, which apologetics would you recommend for this season? We already did Answers 1&2, or what do you have your eyes on for next year? 🎉
@@GraceandGrit oh that would be awesome, the conversations! Ty for replying and ty for sharing your updates. I love that y’all have the daddy daughter experience, and the radio field trip!! I will have to see if we could tour our local radio station.
Love chatty updates! My oldest graduated last June and it has been a roller coaster of emotions. She has done all online classes this school year so she has still been around for Bible and read alouds, which we have all loved. Anyways, my 18 yo and myself have enjoyed books by Ally Carter, especially her Embassy Row series (a YA political thriller, everything we have read has been clean)
