Please read my post. Today is the first time I have seen this use or rift. I just spent an hour online looking up various sites, to see if my 50 years of loving woodworking was wrong or not. All I can say is, there are various definitions on these terms of rift and quarter sawn. Rift was always the best as all pieces were at 90 degrees and most expensive, as there was so much waste to produce them.

Perfect explanation! We inherited an upright piano that I had always heard had a Tiger cut grain - quite distinctive and beautiful. Wanted to know more and this video explained the method wonderfully. Thank you Frank Miller Lumber!

Thank you. I operate an 1824 water powered ‘sash’ mill. Typically demonstrate it with cedar, sometimes poplar, then use lumber in woodwright shop making trinkets for the natives.

Thanks excellent video. Is there a book that explains what we have just seen in order to maximize each log of different sizes because here the video shows only one size of logs.

I understand rotating ends of the log on a circular mill but there's no reason I can think of doing this on a band saw mill.

Question... when I saw quarter sawn boards, they end up with an excessive crown. How do I not end up with crowned boards?
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 5 лет назад
Excellent video. Question: why is the remaining "rift" not cut either point up or down, just to try to squeeze out a few more pieces that are more radially similar to a "quartered" board? Is this because of waste, or does it have to do with the difficulty of handling a log in this way? It seems as though the number of quarter-sawn grain patterns could be maximized if the log was entirely sliced like pieces of cake, that is, radially symmetrical.

so how do you cut quarter sawn on a horozontal band saw

Why not have a horizontal sawmill just after the vertical one, so you get 2 boards in one go?
@davesilvia9711
@davesilvia9711 4 года назад
this only works on a sawmill that cuts vert, if the saw is horozontal the process is totally diffrent.
@ccpanel

instead of rotating lengthwise, why wouldnt you just roll it onto the other face?
@thestcroixkid
@thestcroixkid 10 лет назад
now I just have to figure out how to do it on a horizontal mill....
@Nicewoodworkingulove
@Nicewoodworkingulove 9 лет назад
Put your screen horizontal. Thats what I did.
@ldwithrow08
@ldwithrow08 7 лет назад
Just lay the flat face on the rack and make your cut one board thickness from the BOTTOM. Then you take the board out from under the log quarter and flip it on the other face and cut from the bottom again. You have to set your hold down dogs very low and use dogs that can be set with minimum height above the rack. I've done a whole bunch of logs that way.
@riximanru9105
@riximanru9105 7 лет назад
thats only for straight wood
@greek42069
@greek42069 Год назад
Why is the log rotated and flipped why not just cut 1st board flip that face to bottom to cut second then flip back to cut 3rd?
@bigboss4298
@bigboss4298 6 лет назад
Instead of switching each quarter end for end for every cut, can’t you just roll it and put the new cut edge down?
@gr8dvd
@gr8dvd 6 лет назад
If you have adequate clearance and hold-down dawgs, I also don’t see why the end-to-end flip.
@davea1001
@davea1001 5 лет назад
Not shown in this animation would be a guide/fence along the left side which would be used to ensure uniform thickness boards. If you want to cut without rotating the whole log around each time, you'd have to move the fence from one side to the other.
