Just received mine and tested it with a Schertler Mixer against some older C-Ducer and Barcus Berry contact mics recording a wristwatch whose sound is almost imperceptible to the human ear: i'm blown away from the sensibility and audio quality of the MM Pro! Even with the gain on the Schertler and the MM Pro at max noise was almost inaudible. Great work man!

Sodium carbonate is sold as washing soda. Also the thickness of the quartz slice determines its frequency, thick is low, thin is higher frequency. "Crystals go to War 1943" has a really nice explanation of this.

If you out the pickup closer to the bridge you can get a lot bigger signal output and a more even sound. Where you have it stuck, it picks up the high E more than the rest.

Fantastic video! Excellent description of the experiments, practical solutions for connecting the crystalaro audio input and excellent quantification of the performance. I think it does sound rather good :)

Plot twist: the whole video was recorded on a table salt microphone attached to the mountain you're standing on.

i thought it sounded good at the end. id be interested in hearing it from a crystal mic placed inside inside the guitar sound hole

The final video sounded great! By the way, from your blogs I haven't seen any mention of open sourcing the MM DIY circuit schematics, would you consider this for makers trying to put this module in their own PCBs? I completely understand if you're keeping it proprietary though!

Clever. Maybe try to cut flat slice out of the rochelle salt? Along the cristal's plane. I'd try this :)
@metalmarshmallowllc
@metalmarshmallowllc 8 месяцев назад
Its very crumbly. In one of the timelapses you can see it growing in layers; I wonder if you could control the process to grow a single layer.

Brilliant!!! One quartz two blades and it works like a microphone. Is this idea good for surface contact mic (wood, plastic, masonry, metal, etc.)? let me know. Thank you very much.
@metalmarshmallowllc
@metalmarshmallowllc 8 месяцев назад
I think it will work on wood, plastic, etc, but as you can hear it is not 'good', regular brass piezo discs are much better.

Bro, you just need to try add a membrane, like a plastic or balloon.

@@metalmarshmallowllc Now that being said, imagine if you used that capability to integrate the crystal into an instrument. Like a guitar with conductive paint (or epoxy), crystals grown right on top, and then wired. You could maybe cover much more surface area than a piezo typically could.
@pierpa_76pierpaolo
@pierpa_76pierpaolo 8 месяцев назад
Is it quartz or Rochelle salt ? Or did you get a "crystal" of Rochelle salt (but it has the same yield as quartz) ? I need to understand since I don't speak English. 🤬
@metalmarshmallowllc
@metalmarshmallowllc 8 месяцев назад
I just added 'chapters' to the video. The first three and a half minutes show quartz only. The next four and a half minutes show rochelle salt only. The remainder of the video compares both, and the final guitar recording uses rochelle salt. I hope that helps. What is your language?
