Buy the RR50 RGB Light here: amzn.to/3LYm36r - It's our QUASAR Science Double Rainbow Review! These RGB lube lights get a BIG upgrade with new effects, lighting controls, mounting system, and features. See what's inside the new Quasar Rainbow LED Tubes!
Quasar Science LED lights have become a staple on film sets, and the new Double Rainbow lights and Quasar Rainbow 2 lights have come a long way since their original X-fade tubes. Our Quasar Double Rainbow review shows some of the new features like individual pixel mapping and the Ossium bracket system.
The Quasar RR50 Rainbow lights also feature a Low Output Mode for microdimming. This is ideal for using these RGB LED Tube lights as practicals in a scene where they can be dimmed very low.
If you have any questions on the techniques used in this review video, please send a note in the comments. Thanks for watching QUASAR Science Double Rainbow Review! (RGB Tube Lights Get BIG Upgrade), in our Film Jams series!

Thank you for this video!👍🏻 Weird thing is that I got a 4' Double Rainbow unit a while ago but had spotted some serious problems with its abnormally weak blue channel in RGB mode, which caused -- 1) its pure blue looking a lot more violet than any other RGB fixture's pure blue (including Quasar Science's own original rainbow line) 2) its cyan preset looking far more bluish-green than greenish-blue (or something in the middle) since the light's green channel is so much stronger than its blue channel (more than 3 stops brighter), which wasn't a problem with the original Quasar rainbow tube's cyan preset. 3) very noticeably ungradual stepping in its overall brightness (or even flicker-like) when displaying rainbow pixel effect in 48 pixel groups (as opposed to my other pixel tube fixtures' rainbow effect that can transition into/out from blue a lot more smoothly), although the issue is slightly less visible after lowering the number of its pixel groups. 4) just the nearly unusable level of dimness in its blue channel in general, cuz I don't see a point in using this "100w" tube for blue light when it can be almost overpowered by two 5w Aputure MC's or easily overpowered by one 40w Aputure T4c tube's blue light. I first thought that I simply got a faulty unit, but after spotting the exact same problems in the subsequent two replacement units from Quasar Science as well as in the demo unit at my local film gear retailer I've come to believe that it's actually a common problem with this whole product line, despite how perfect every reviewer I've seen on RU-vid claims it to be. So I'm just wondering if you happen to also experience the same issues with your units or if you think I'm just looking at it wrong?🤔🤗

You’re welcome and thanks for watching! The new Rainbows have a completely redesigned color system. So they definitely won’t act like the old rainbows. But mine dim much lower (actually to 1% unlike many other LEDs on the market). And the universal color engine is also a different way of thinking about color. So if you’re adjusting a blue hue for example- you do need to be aware of what the base Kelvin is set to unlike the older Quasar lights. I would recommend reaching out to Tim Kang over at Quasar. He walked me through the new color engine and I’d imagine he could help you too. I’ve had nothing but a great experience working with these new rainbows and prefer them to pretty much every other tube light out there for their color science alone. I do wish they had figured out a way to swap the batteries internally tho like the SGC tubes.

@@FilmJams Thanks for responding🙌🏼 I visited Quasar Science in LA a few days ago, and Tim & Ray at the office were very generous with their time helping me understand how the light's blue channel was designed to behave, which was that they found blue light usually easier to clip/blow out than other colors so they basically made it output less than red & green on purpose. (with additional information about why using a lightmeter to measure the light's RGB channels' brightness individually may produce inaccurate results and how important matching the light's base CT to the camera's WB is to getting a consistent exposure on camera across the hue range) After I compared my unit with theirs, I saw no clear difference between the two lights' blue channel output, so I thought that I probably did originally test the light wrong and that following their tips could give a drastically improved result on the blue's brightness on camera. I took the unit back home with me and conducted another simple test on camera with everything set to what they suggested, but its pure blue still looked way darker than it needs to be, which especially shows with the camera directly pointing at the light displaying pixel rainbow effect and you can see that when the shot is exposed for its pure blue all the other colors on the light are either clipped or near clipped, and when all the other colors look well-exposed only pure blue looks under-exposed, and the result was pretty much the same with the camera filming other subjects being over-exposed by the light in its color chase mode at 100% and you can see that the subject looks blown-out in the shot at every hue except blue and when the shot's exposed for the subject at every other hue only blue makes it look under-exposed, so I couldn't really find a reason to believe that's how the Double Rainbow was supposed to behave. When I showed my test clips to Ray, even he agreed that it does seem like there's a major dip in the output of the light's blue channel compared to its other two channels, and said that he'll need to bring it up to Tim, so my guess would be that they probably did design the light with preventing the blue channel clipping in mind but that aspect got eventually somehow overcompensated & resulted in a rather abnormally weak blue channel?🤔

@@zhiyingdi3720 for sure! And glad you were able to connect with Tim and the guys over there. They can definitely explain the science much better than me. I hope they’re able to figure out what is going on with the color there. I do know that they designed the blue to avoid clipping but interesting to hear about your tests. Do you have any of your video tests or samples online I could check out?
