Don't sleep on Brian May, one of the best guitarists to ever play. He built that guitar you hear (with his father's help) when he was 16 years old. The wood is from an old fireplace. The guitar is known as Red Special, and has its own Wikipedia entry. He's got a PhD in Astrophysics, and he wrote most of the music and lyrics for the band. Freddie had the voice and the spotlight, but he wasn't the only standout in Queen.

Well let’s start with the bass player John Deacon wrote the song and that great riff. The band didn’t think they should put it out as a single until Michael Jackson persuaded them to. It was the first Queen single to go to number one in the states. The cool sound effects were from Brian’s guitar with a special amp built by John to work with Brian’s custom guitar. Brian built his guitar with his father as a 19 year old, he called it the red special. I would recommend 100% The live aid concert 1985. It is been said to be the best live concert in Rock history.

If you’re wondering why this particular song has such a strong bass line and strong percussion throughout It’s because it was written by John Deacon, the bassist for the band. Freddie encouraged him to write and helped him a bit when he started out and he turned out to be one of the band’s strongest writers.

Freddie worked hard to get that angry rasp that Deacon wanted in this song. It’s said he was coughing blood by the end of recording. He always wore a hat to sing this because of the lyrics - Steve has the brim of his hat down low. In this official video he wears at least 2 different caps which is why his headgear disconcertingly changes colour - for years I blamed the lighting engineers not Freddie messing with us. Bootleg recordings show that he would sometimes improvise smutty lyrics. Freddie, easily bored had to keep himself amused. If you ever want to hear a pin drop in a noisy crowd of thousands… Montreal 1981 is a relatively tame but fun example. Freddie took having fun very very seriously.

My favorite is one of those 'hidden gems', as it isn't played as often by reactors - Love of My Life. It's a ballad, but the words are so powerful! Freddy wrote it as a tribute to his former girlfriend / best friend when he heard she was getting married. It really isn't a sad song, more a regret that things between them will forever be changed. The best recording is life from their concert in Rio, I believe. Hope you'll give it a shot soon! Honestly, there isn't a Queen song that's bad, so whatever you want to listen to, we'll be there to join the fun :)

Marine Corps Boot Camp, summer 1988, had a drill instructor who liked this song. When ever a recruit dropped from our platoon, he had to do an inventory of all that recruit's stuff to make sure the were going to the next platoon with everything they needed. The DI would routinely grab one of the canned items (brass polish, spray starch, etc) and thump it on the desk.... thump thump thump and we were all expected to shout "Another One Bites The Dust!" It got really funny one day when that DI was marching us back to the squad bay, and someone was cleaning one of the mats inside the entry way of company HQ. He had it over a railing and smacked it 3 times... we all responded with "Another one bites the dust!" BTW, in my humble opinion, Freddy Mercury is the greatest front man ever. Checkout some of the songs of the album "Miracle". At that point Freddy already knew he was dying and put out some powerful vocals. Break thru is a personal favorite for me.

This song was written by Queen's bassist John Deacon and Freddie really wanted the band to record it but Roger (drummer) and Brian (lead guitarist), not so much. Freddie and John pushed them to record it. John tried hard to explain to Freddie the sound he was striving for but was handicapped because he didn't sing. Nevertheless, Freddie understood what John wanted and nearly made his throat bled getting that gritty sound. FYI - Those odds sounds actually were all produced by Brian on his homemade electric guitar, the Red Special, while it was connected to a treble-booster and then to the Deacy amp. The amp was designed and built by bassist John Deacon who has a degree in electronic engineering. Brian could produce all sorts of sounds using that setup including sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals, They recorded "Another One Bites The Dust" for the album "The Game" and it was part of the live concert rotation but they never intended to release it as a single. Michael Jackson, who was a big Queen fan and a friend of Freddie's, always came to their concerts when Queen played L.A. "Another One Bites The Dust" was part of the show. When the concert was over, Michael came backstage so enthusiastic about that song. He told them that it would be a big hit and that they had to release it as a single. Again Roger and Brian were resistant to the idea, but Freddie talked them into it. "Another One Bites The Dust" was Queen's biggest hit in the USA. If you like this bass line, you should check out the song "Under Pressure" which also has an iconic bassline (it may sound familiar since another recording artist stole it for his song). I love their live performance of the song at Wembley from 1986 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OVzvoPP6M50.html. BTW - Did you notice Freddie's magic hat during the video that kept changing colors? Another example of Freddie's sense of humor.
