Hey Jamel, listen to Queen's song: "Fight from the Inside" It's a bit on the funky side, imo. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5lR0w4F03Qk.html
I'm gonna save up some money & get some of your merch. You're a, lovely human! BTW, I'm not a big Queen fan.. But I am a big Traffic fan, check out The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys.. Oh and since your mom&I share the same birthday, for me, check out Elton John's Madman Across The Water. Xo
@Jamel_AKA_Jamal I really think you need to check this amazing human out... Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (22 January 1971 - 25 July 2017), also referred to since his death as Dr G Yunupingu, was an Indigenous Australian musician. Born blind Geoffrey was a multi-instrumentalist, he played drums, keyboards, guitar (a right-hand-strung guitar played left-handed) and didgeridoo, but it was the clarity of his singing voice that attracted rave reviews. He sang stories of his land both in Yolŋu languages such as Gaalpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, a dialect related to Gumatj, and in English. Although his solo career brought him wider acclaim, he was also formerly a member of Yothu Yindi, and later Saltwater Band. He was the most commercially successful Aboriginal Australian musician at the time of his death. Here's the link for one of his songs love and peace. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LvJPXAV0eB4.html
I heard it many, many times before I ever saw the video. I love the song, but I wish people would listen to it at least once before seeing the video. Nobody catches how pretty the instrumentation is.
@@s1d299 I was an 80s kid, so I saw/heard it first on MTV, can't unsee it. But, I do love the song on it's own. I just see the vacuum scene in my head when I hear it. :)
AJ17 Freddie in an Interview said something like ‘Everybody who sees this video thinks it was my idea, it wasn’t, someone came up with it and everybody went running into their frocks!’ 😄
Rogerina is a cute girl. The problem is Americans don't understand British humor. Check out Monty Python, you'll see men dressed as women quite regularly. Also when he's talking about how Freddie gets into the role he's totally correct. Freddie was an entertainer and threw himself into every role. No one could control a crowd like Freddie. Check out the Live aid show, and others where he works the crowd.
idk, there has been a few popular crossdressing males. One of the earliest that comes to mind is Milton Berle. Others off the top of my head were John Candy, and John Ritter. But what do I know? I'm an American who likes British humor. Grew up with my father watching UK shows like 'Black Adder', 'Are You Being Served', and 'Mr. Bean'. With 'Are You Being Severed' My personal favorite. :)
I'm an American who watched Monty Python's Flying Circus on TV as far back as 1974, when I was in high school, and then there was The Avengers, in the 60's. I was a huge Emma Peel fan as a child. I remember watching To The Manor Born, with Penelope Keith, somewhere back there. So when I hear people talk about Americans not understanding British Humour, I can't help feeling that you are coming up just a tad short, in your research.
@@FIDreams Mrs. Brown's boys is a newer version although it may have more of a Scottish bent but it is hilarious. Most of the actors are family members and Mrs. Brown herself is a man, who consistently breaks the 4th wall and talks directly to the audience or camera crew, sometimes directing them from the stage. Check ot out, it's here on the youtubes.
@@RickTBL I've been watching Python since high skool myself (the 70's). It came on at 11 PM so later while i worked in a coal mine i would watch till the last second to see as much as i could before i had to leave for work. I also liked Benny Hilland black adder when it was on.
I love this video so much. Roger Taylor looks brilliant as a girl. It always surprises me how many people focus on Freddie in this video and never realise that's Roger as a schoolgirl, John as a granny, and Brian in Hilda Ogden-style.
Freddie was a great fan of Ballet; the dance sequence included members of the English National Ballet and was based upon L'apres Midi d'n faune by Debussy. The crowd sequence of men in miner's hats was a nod to the coal strikes that were happening at the time. Altogether a great video of a terrific song, thank you for reacting to it.
To be more specific it’s based on the njinsky version of afternoon of a faun(the same ballet I just called it by its English name because I don’t want to try typing in French lol). Yes there are 2 ballets was of the name and they are totally different
@@qfiona Nijinsky, the great Russian dancer was the original choreographer of Debussy's music in 1911. Few male leads were able to perform the piece the way Nijinsky notated it and it was re notated in the 1980s, for Nureyev, I believe. Two interpretations of the same dance, but effectively one piece.
Actually there is a rather distinct difference in the Nijinsky and Jerome Robbins ballets ... the Jerome ballet day a set in a studio and is a duet... Ok I just totally nerded out on a ballet on a reaction video of a queen song notorious for having the band in drag lol. I might need a life
My Grandma passed away a couple of years ago and was absolutely insistent this got played at her funeral, it made for a very strange and very uplifting moment.
One of my favourite music videos. 😂❤️ The first part is based on Coronation Street soap opera based in Manchester that had been on our British television screens since the 60’s. Surprisingly this was not Freddie’s original idea. He just went along with it!
Oscar Alexander Martinez It really is... I was born in the late 90’s but my parents brought me up on the music that they grew up with. Coronation Street is still on the television here in the UK 6 times a week (we have just gone back to six episodes per week after filming was suspended due to Covid-19 but have still been getting 3 episodes per week). I only learned by watching people like Jamel react to this song that it wasn’t Freddie’s idea! SIDE NOTE: Roger Taylor looks like Raquel one of the characters in Coronation Street in this video. Well to me he does anyway. 😂 You are very welcome Oscar.
It's also been on tv in Canada since then. It was my mother's favourite soap opera and eventually my dad started watching it as well. I love the fact that Freddie has his moustache while dressed up as a woman in this video. Makes me laugh every time, especially when he does the little lip movement on that first closeup.
kleinnel Wow! That’s amazing I knew that Corrie had quite a big Canadian following but I didn’t know that it went so far back. Thank you for telling me that! I have been watching since I was little and I’m 23 now... I have been watching ‘Classic Corrie’ after itv started showing all the episodes they made from 1990. I wonder how long they can keep that going as they show two episodes per day! We are on 97/98 now. I see that your Dad was drawn into it and probably started secretly liking it himself. It is quite a contrast isn’t it, it’s so fun and lighthearted, although at the time it was deemed highly offensive and unnatural. I personally love it, but maybe that has something to do with the generation I’m from although there were people who fully supported the video at the time.
At The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, Lisa Stansfield sang this and it was an awesome performance. Some great performances at that show. 1992 I think.
@@ginnyjuraniec1955 He did shave it for that part in particular, the video was almost entirely put together and that was a different session where they shot Freddie interacting with the ballet dances and he shaved his mustache for that part in particular, I don't recall if that part was planned form the begining or somehow the opportunity to have the dancers on the video came up and it was done but the idea was to have Freddie dancing and crossdressed with his shaved face all along but in the end they thought it was hilarious to have seductive sassy Freddie with his mustache and all and that it was too funny to left it out of the video and al that was shot with Freddie sporting his signature mustache of the 80's era…
One of the greatest video of Queen Freddie's drag name was Melina. The video clip is based on a British sitcom, got banned in the USA from mtv because of the content. I found it perfect either way Thank you Jamal
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd Really? bet you couldnt wait to say that ...just needed the chance huh?...this song came out in the 80's the US was much more conservative in those days...as was the U.K. remember Mary Whitehouse? gay people have since the time of this videos release have been permitted in the military,to adopt children, and get married in the U.S. so do a little research before you publicly bash my country!!!!!
Canadian session player Fred Mandel on synth solo, done in one take except the last diving note (the settings needed to be changed so it could drop a full octave)! Specializes in keyboards and guitar, and keyboards that sound like guitar. People have heard and loved his work and never knew it was him, playing on tracks or on tour with: - Queen - Pink Floyd - Elton John - Alice Cooper - Supertramp - Anthrax
I was living in Europe when this was out. Loved it! Young me was surprised it wasn't a song being played in the states. (Older me now gets why it wasn't in the US then - US just wasn't ready for the full Freddie!). A lot of people are just now discovering this song!
@@AB-ef7ud It was a different world. And God only knows why my parents let me fly by myself to Germany to spend the summer traveling around Europe with my best friend - alone - we were 15. ... next stop Carnaby Street to buy some "circle A" buttons for jacket!
That lead piece is played on a Oberheim OB-X synthesizer - a beast of a machine and on a lot of rock & pop songs of the early 80s. Brian May plays the lead on his guitar on live gigs.
Kevin Hechinger It’s also why the original members of Queen never toured the US again - Freddie was PO’d that this video was blocked by MTV’s dumbass higher ups. They didn’t get the joke that it was based on a British sitcom.
@@lynnhoffman247 Not a sitcom, but a long-running iconic soap opera - Coronation Street. Btw, the alarm clock-plus-electric kettle at the beginning is a teasmade, a very British household appliance.
Written by bass manJohn Deacon. The song is actually about him being weary of non stop touring, recording and being away from his young family. John ended up with six kids and still lives in the same house in London he bought with the early money he made with Queen.
Jamel This song was written by the bassist John Decon one of the many hit the he wrote. The sound that had you baffled was Brian May's guitar pushed through a mix of compresion, overdrive, distortion, sustain and a small amount of echo effect pedals
It isn't. The song is written by bassplayer John Deacon, who was getting fed up with Brians compulsory guitar solo, so he put in a keyboard solo. Deacon wrote another one bites the dust, which was a huge hit with American R&B audiences in 1980. The cross-dressing in I want to break free, a mere four years later, was a bit much for the prudish Americans, which caused a downfall for Queens popularity in the States.
David Bowie's cover of 'The Man Who Sold The World' also showed a beautiful David in a dress. A dress he wore out and about and inside his home apparently.
The weird sound they used is a called a synthesizer. It is an electronic keyboard that can generate all sorts of different sounds by changing the effects.
You know what? Seeing this today, and hearing the video appreciated for the genteel camp it always was, makes me feel that we may have made at least a little progress as a society over the last thirty-odd years.
Oh my goodness. You’re the first American reactor that is spot on. They dressed up as characters in a soap opera over here in the UK 🇬🇧. Great reaction mate. Really appreciate you
The visuals for Queen's "It's A Hard Life" video are stunning! Once and again every member of the band is in character with flamboyant costumes...especially Freddie! The music and lyrics, wonderful! It's a great option to react to as well
My grandparents had the same hoover. Brilliant laugh from Queen with this one. Quintessential British humour revolving around Coronation Street, a popular TV soap which has been running since the 60's. Great song hehehe.
@Gavin Holt - From what I’ve read, John Deacon, who wrote the song, is the one who was getting tired of the compulsory guitar solo for Brian May, and wanted something different. A session musician whom the band knew, Fred Mandel, played a synth solo on the record. What John might’ve felt was ironic is that for live performances, Brian played guitar during the synth solo part of the song.
Great song! Love it! Love Queen ❤ Freddie would have been amazing in theatre! Awesome strong powerful voice, and so full of energy, and yes, he gets right into character! Amazing legend! Long live Freddie🕺🏻❤💕 RIP Freddie ❤️ 🌹
I wish somebody would react to Brian May singing 39 and then George Michael singing 39 at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert it's a short little song but I like it and I love both versions and also I want it all by Queen
@@jameskirschling7887 yes on the Freddie Mercury tribute concert it's pretty cool he also did somebody to love that concert has many great songs and acts David Bowie and Annie Lennox Def Leppard Metallica Guns and Roses Elton John
@@tgranny3547 I just watched both videos of George Michael at the tribute concert and he did a fantastic job. It's too bad George passed away, he would have been a great addition to Queen instead of Adam Lambert. You can't beat Freddie Mercury, I was lucky enough to see him live but if Queen toured with George Michael I would go to that concert
I'm glad you enjoyed them I wish I would have been able to see Freddie Mercury and queen live I'm still waiting for a time machine but hey you got to check out those other ones I told you about on that same concert they're really good one of my favorite part was when Joe Elliott and queen do you Tie Your Mother Down and another favorite part is when Metallica's James Hetfield does Stone Cold crazy with Queen oh and I like to watch Rodger Daltrey and queen do I want it all
@@tgranny3547 I will watch the rest eventually. I just got home from a long day at work and I am winding down before I go to bed. The songs you recommended are some of my favorite Queen songs so I am definitely interested in seeing them.
For kicks and giggles, would be funny to follow this one up with Tim Curry's "Sweet Transvestite" ("From tran-sexual Transylvania!") from ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW...
The moment my iPad fell off the stand I said “oooops” you said “ummm” (0:42) 😂 Jamal: They got brother Freddie dressed up like a cow My Brain: I Want To Break Fresian 😁😆
Crazy thing Queen didn't break through to America until 1985 at Live Aid to become iconic, but in the seventies I was buying their albums as a teen in the late seventies, I still love this band
That moment of bliss when the harmonized guitars enter, establishing the band's sound. Despite their sonic adventures, they always have a moment to bring it all back home.
4:28 - That, my friend, is a synth. John Deacon, who wrote the song, insisted he didn't want guitar solos in the song, so they got Fred Mandel, a canadian musician who usually collaborated with Queen, to create and play a synth solo. Brian May only played the solo on guitar live.
Went top 10 in the likes of Australia,France, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany but only made it as high as 45 in the US. The official video was just to much for the US back in the day and gained very little play time on the likes of MTV.
Queen is my favorite band of all time, and recently I have been taking a break from them, but watching this video made me remember how much I love them 🤣. Thank you!
A few more Queen songs to do" "Spread Your Wings", "Keep Yourself Alive", "Liar", "March of the Black Queen", "Brighton Rock" (Live version!!), "Death on Two Legs" (Best revenge song ever!), "39", "Tie Your Mother Down", "Get Down, Make Love", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Save Me", "Hammer to Fall", "Headlong", "The Show Must Go On"........
Fantastic. Bass guitar player John Deacon was the frumpy granny in the dark coat and hat, guitarist Brian May was wearing the curlers, pink satin and lace nighty and bunny slippers (I thought he was possibly the spinster or widow Auntie). Dressing in drag is a popular form of comedy in the UK. The guys all had a blast dressing in drag, they thought it was hilarious. Infamously, the stuffed shirts at MTV didn't get the joke behind the cross-dressing part of the video and banned it, Ronald Reagan was President at the time. The ballet section actually featured Freddie with members of the royal ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan. The role Freddie is supposed to be, I think is Puck, the sprite most famous from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's dream." Also, in case your wondering, the device in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. Its a combination kettle and alarm clock. Its supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly unstable. Also, the band was always experimenting with their music, pushing the envelope, going against the grain. Brian May and Roger tailor did an audio commentary on this song and its really interesting and funny. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jiwz3sBEWcU.html
These are the days of our lives by queen is a must listen. Absolutely beautiful and a bit heart breaking. The last video Freddie filmed before passing. The lyrics are amazing and very sentimental. It was played at my mother's funeral 3 years ago because of the beautiful song and mom dearly loved queen.
You will be moved by the beauty of ‘Those were the days of our lives’ , a Queen song Recorded towards the end of Freddie’s life. It’s a beautiful song.
