Many straight men looked like that. Back in the day, it got you laid. This was 1974. The era of Glam Rock, also called The Androgynous Look.

Indeed, in the pictures of the backcover of Queen's debut album all four of them looked androgynous. Edit: oh, and Queen II's inner sleeve!

In fact I was six at the time, & had a big crush on Leiff Garrett. Nobody looked more fem than he did, without makeup. Shawn & David Cassidy, were a close second & third.

A lot of guys back then myself included went for the androgynous look with the long hair and tight pants and girls loved it, I was very slim with hair past my shoulders we all did it, It was the era of Glam Rock and lots of bands were playing with Gender and sexuality chief among these were Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, We didn't care if they were Gay or not they impressed us with their music and sheer talent and that was enough nothing else mattered at all we didn't care about sexuality or colour the music was all that mattered, This one is from their first Album "Queen" and it gave us just a taste of what was to come little did we know how great Queen were to become, Keep up the great reviews I love your honest reactions to Queen and I'm glad there is a new fan in our ranks.

I love Queen in the 70s. They all wore heels, they all wore makeup, they all wore jewellery. They did actually wear makeup in the 80s too, but not as much. They've spoken in interviews about their love for clothing and different fabrics like sequins and velvet and satin. The Guitarist (Brian May), at 71, still rocks the glamorous looks occasionally! Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate the bassist's (the one in heels and bow tie) solo? John Deacon you rock!

Please keep reacting to Queen, it's the initial reason I subscribed to your channel. Seeing you react to Queen brings me back to the days when I first started listening to Queen heavily and got, what my sister-in-law referred to as "Mercury Poisoning". No one could ever match Freddie. Together they were an unstoppable force! And as others have said, Glam Rock, Glitter Rock, whatever you want to call it, it was just the style at the time.

Love the old Queen! The first 2 albums from them don't have the barrage of hits of the later albums, but they are arguably more interesting. As they developed their sound, you could tell they were trying to put their unique stamp on music, and they came up with some very progressive stuff in the early days.

Yes! I've been waiting for you to do some early Queen! They rocked hard & it was terrific. The look was Glam-rock and nobody thought twice about guys in makeup & satin. And believe me, girls found it sexy..women still do. The only outfit Freddie ever wore that I don't like is the harlequin leotard. But this black get-up?Oh yeah. And notice the chain-mail fingerless glove? He was doing the glove thing long before MJ. Please do "Son & Daughter" Live at The Rainbow '74 Part 11/24. If you do, make sure it's that one with the 11/24, it's better quality. EDIT: I corrected that last bit to "at the Rainbow", not Hyde Park

Don’t regret your musical roots in rap. When you listen to any rock group, you’re listening to a genre that is based on black music created by black superstars. Muddy Waters said, “The Blues had a baby and they called it Rock and Roll.” Exploring the black roots of Rock is something that the Rock Hall does extraordinarily well.

I appreciate your reactions very much because you are true. Some people who react to music videos are too academic, they analyse every single phrase or tone (which is not necessarily bad), or they just listen and say wow. But it can be seen that Queen music really makes it through to you and you probably feel what Freddie intended you to feel. You said you had always felt you were different and so was Freddie. Maybe that is the reason you fell in loce with Queen.😁Anyway, thanks for the reactions and keep on going, you are doing a terrific job.

This song contains one of my favorite Deacury (Freddie and John) moments, with them singing the 'mama, I'm gonna be your slave' part side by side. They were very close and John Deacon took his death very hard, as they all did. I feel it's one of the main reasons John retired after Freddie died.

I love your reactions, JB, and LOVE that you're a Queen fan, too! You're absolutely right, there's nothing wrong with opening ourselves up to new and different genres of music. Music is about expression and feelings. It's every person who loves it's individual emotional journey, and there's something to get from all of it if we just allow ourselves to feel, and let our minds to be open to acceptance. That's what you have to admire about the more flamboyant artists like Freddie and Bowie and Elton. I remember seeing Bowie on SNL when I was a kid and he had a pink skirt on....and he sang his ass off! No one gave a shit what he was wearing. lol

JB glad you decided to carry on with the Queen reactions. Your journey with Queen reminds me of my first real experience of Queen when l bought Greatest Hits on tape. Like many people l was surprised how many songs l knew but didn't realise they were by Queen. I was amazed how each song was completely different to the previous one. I became an instant fan and made it my mission to buy every single album. With that being said you've still got a load of great Queen songs to discover many of which weren't released as singles. So l would suggest Keep Yourself Alive and Great King Rat from Queen l and March of the Black Queen, White Queen and Ogre Battle from Queen for starters.

I think if one style sticks around too long people get sick of it and want to go in a new direction. The 50's were more clean cut and buttoned up, and that slowly gave way over the following decade to men growing their hair and beards longer, the hippie look, very natural, casual, flowers in your hair, etc. Then that starts to get old. And then you see this directional shift to something more dramatic, more high maintenance; men with makeup, sparkly, tight clothes. Its a new and different mood, strange and exciting. It's like each new generation of style likes to shock the one before. Push the boundary. Think of how straggly hippies horrified the straight laced, buzz cut adults at first. Then over time the culture loosens up, the adults get used to it and then it's not taboo and dangerous anymore. Not fun anymore. Time to shock mom and dad again. What better way than having their sons put on eyeliner and tights and sequined scarves and disappear into darkly lit clubs with light shows and wailing guitars. Rock music is all about rebellion, wanting to break away and live on the edge. Every time the edge looks a little different, but the spirit of it is similar.

A lot of people were proud back then. Coming out of the 60's, people were invigorated. Sadly, it died down a bit as the 70's waned on. Also one thing to remember is that Glam Rock was huge at the time. It had a more flamboyant style (Bowie, T-rex, etc). And love your reactions!

When I was a kid I used to paint my own t-shirts and my friends used to ask me to make t-shirts for them and this was back in the 70,s and I hung out at a gas station in a very small town so I heard of Queen and they blew me away, so I made a t-shirt with there logo and I was very proud of it and I went to the gas station thinking everyone would think it was cool but when I got there I was LAUGHED at , back then I did not realize my t-shirt in bold letters said queen Now this was back in the day. I went home freaking out but when I sat down and figured out why they laughed I had a good laugh myself. Times were differant back then.

I feel music helps one to focus on our lives. For my part I was (and still am ) selective in the music I choose to follow...and the composers of today’s music who pioneered the music of today and tomorrow. If I make references to events of the past I find a song or a tune helps to jog the memory. To many my choice of song may be too obscure as would their’s! Some may never have entered the charts...and they’re usually the best

If you like this one check out Death on Two Legs , Freddie and the lads figured out the record company executive was screwing them over. The boys were so broke they couldn’t afford to buy Roger a set of drumsticks but their manager Norman Sheffield seemed to be rolling in dough, driving a brand new Rolls Royce while the band was trying to survive on sandwiches and crisps and when Freddie’s mic stand broke in half they couldn’t afford to replace it and it ended up becoming a thing, him using the half of a mic stand at shows.

This is the beginning of glam rock. All men looked like a little like women, either through their costumes, hair, (Bon Jovi), their makeup, whatever, and women LOVED IT!!! But you bring up an interesting point, where a lot of hip hop is extra masculine, and these men have a serious problem with glam rock, although from the stories I've heard, most glam rock guys could kick ass. But it makes you wonder what hip hop men were afraid of. Why were they so unbelievably challenged by glam rock??? Why were they so scared. Was it the way they were brought up? Was it the fear that if they liked a glam rock band that they might be gay? And for heavens sake, we are in the 21st century. Being gay isn't catching!! Why can't you like and admire a bisexual man for his art, and not what he does in the privacy of his home? I understand the pendulum swings from looking straight laced, to hippie, to glam, to whatever comes next. But after watching hundreds of reaction videos on RU-vid, I've noticed how a lot of men make fun of the clothes, the hair, the fact that Queen looked like women, and they NEVER hear the song or the message. It makes me sad. That is why the first time I heard you, I subscribed. You heard the music. Good or bad, it should always be about the music!
