Funny thing is... Brian May (guitar) of Queen said he didn't think too much of the Live Aid show while playing it. He recalled going up on stage, playing the short set like any other gig, and running off stage... The next day, Queen was the headline on every newspaper and everyone was talking about Freddie and Queen's set... When May looked at the footage and heard the audio, he admitted it was Freddie's show for sure that day.

Freddie held a microphone in one hand and 100,000 people in the other. Genius!

We Are the Champions is all Queen. Not only did they write it, the version everyone is familiar with is sung by them too. It’s just that it took on such a big life of its own that most people never thought to ask where it came from.

Most great bands and musician studied this performance because it was considered by all to be a perfect 20 minute concert. Instead of playing their newest singles (exept Hammer to Fall) like other groups, Queen played their music for the fans. With Freddie leading and having years of arena rock shows under his belt, he knew how to include the 78,000 people there and the billions around the world. YES! That is exactly right! Freddie was aware of everything, the ULTIMATE multitasking person when it came to music! Most people can’t keep up with themselves while singing, add an instrument, more difficult. Freddie knew what everybody was doing, including the crowd. And the cameras! Never known him to wear an ear monitor, and none of the other band members did either. They relied on the old fashioned floor monitors, which you just said! Brian and especially Roger wear them now, much, much later in life. Occasionally. Freddie wrote “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” in 5 to 10 mins on a guitar and he usually composed on a piano. Tribute to Elvis. Is that nuts or what? “We are the Champions” at Live Aid is one of my favorite versions of the song. It is the look on his face while he sings or something. And they only had 20 mins for their part of the concert so they cut down Bo Rhap and We will Rock You because of time. Freddie was sick during this performance, he had a throat infection and the doc told him not to this but Freddie was the ultimate professional, it was important, and he powered through. You don’t really notice it at all, until We are the Champions, but Roger (Drummer) stepped it up, and really belted it out allowing Freddie to stay on the lower notes. Just incredible. So many believe this is the best live performance of all time, I know I do, and he was sick! You missed a song, the encore, “Is This the World We Created” just Freddie and Brian on a 12 String guitar. It is outstanding! ❤️

Someone else has probably given you this info, but here are the basics: Freddie - Vocals, piano, guitar. Born in Zanzibar, went to boarding school in India, immigrated w/ his family to England when he was about 18. Had a degree in graphic design & designed all Queen's logos etc. Died in '91 from complications from AIDS, he was 45. Dr. Brian May - Guitar, vocals, piano. Built his guitar (Red Special) w/ his father as a teen from an old fireplace & odds and ends. Had a degree in astrophysics & after Freddie died he finished his doctorate & periodically consults w/ NASA (while still touring with Queen + Adam Lambert & working with other artists) Roger Taylor - Drums, vocals, guitar (but not on Queen material). Has a degree in biology & was in dentistry school (quit to concentrate on Queen). Has several solo albums. His son is touring w/ the current lineup of Queen + Adam Lambert (percussion). John Deacon - Bass, limited backup vocals in concert, guitar, keyboards. Has a degree in electrical engineering & designed a unique amp called "The Deaky Amp" that Brian still uses to this day. Took Freddie's death very hard & retired from the music business in 1997. Queen is the only band that every member wrote a #1 song & so were all inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. They write/perform multiple genres including Rock, pop, gospel, rockabilly, folk, blues, funk/disco, opera (Freddie has an entire album of duets with an opera diva).

Your confusion during We are the Champions is extremely common. Almost everyone has heard various songs by Queen but they don't always know it was Queen that did them.

Brian May told once: Freddie was very good on the guitar, very unorthodox - all downstrokes. He wrote the riff for “Ogre Battle” [from 1974’s Queen II]. I used to play it with up- and downstrokes, but he was all downstrokes. Imagine how fast his right hand was moving! He had a frenetic energy on the guitar, which came across very well in that song. He played the rhythm on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” I wanted to sound as good as Freddie did on that record, which was damn good. As a massive fan of Jimy Hendrix, Freddie taught himself to play the guitar, after some point he gave up on the idea. In live situations he only played rhythm guitar on Crazy Little Thing Called Love. However, he was capable of doing more then rhythm guitar, he wrote the song Ogre Battle on the guitar. He also recorded the original solo in Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Freddie also likely wrote Liar and Stone Cold Crazy on the guitar.

At the very end of the set, you can see the box near Freddie's feet that displays lights: Each band had EXACTLY 20 minutes of performing time. The light in the box would turn yellow as a warning, then - the moment the red light came on - ALL THE POWER to their instruments would turn OFF! If you watch, you'll see that Freddie/the guys have it timed right down to the SECOND: Freddie's arm comes down to end the song at the exact SAME moment that red light comes on! (They were the only band that "took (Live Aid) seriously" and really practiced beforehand: They had practiced for a week in a room with giant clocks around them on the walls, so they would have their timing down exactly.) :D

“Ready Freddie!” I think a big reason why this performance is so legendary was that the crowd didn’t know it was about to happen!! Just added to the energy…Live Aid crowd, Queen weren’t on the lineup, the heat tiring everyone out, then Freddie & the boys surprising everyone and holding the people in the palm of their hands 🙌 The fact they only had 20 minutes kinda adds to everyone still wanting more of them, even all these years later 😁

Queen can and has packed this stadium on a few occasions just by themselves but this was a concert of all kinds of top tier bands. This concert was shown around the world with this show and another one in Philadelphia. I have heard that 80% of the world viewed this concert. Freddie wrote Crazy Little Thing as a tribute to Elvis. He wrote it in 10 minutes while taking a bath. It is one of my favorite Queen songs. Brian played three different guitars during Crazy Little thing at this concert. Acoustic, Stratocaster and Brian's own Red Special. No earpiece for Freddie. The whole band said it was hard to hear themselves at this concert and there was no sound check prior to the performance...Queen is just that good. Each group was only allowed 20 minutes so some of the songs were shortened or sped up to fit into the time slot. They did a good job, got 6 and songs and the Ahh-Oh into 21 minutes. Freddie wrote this song and Queen performed it.

Elvis and the Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Watch that again and pay attention to Brian playing guitar. At the beginning he plays acoustic with Freddie on electric. For the guitar solo, he plays a Fender Telecaster to make it sound like it belonged in a Elvis song. For the ending, he's back on his Red Special made by him and his father in the 1960s.

I would love to see you check out the song Dreamers Ball by Queen. Freddie sings it but Brian the guitarist primarily wrote it. Its a a really beautiful tribute to Elvis shortly after he passed. Sounds like a really cool blend of their two styles and super underrated! Love the Queen reactions.

I loved this reaction, especially cause right off the bat you pointed out this man was full of talent! He also played the piano 😎 But the real amazing story was that he and the rest of Queen made the this charity event popping, every other artist sang their song and didn't interact with the camera or the people who were at home watching so very little money was made. Over 90% of money from this concert was made when Queen went on and Freddy Mercury ran about with the camera in his white tank top. Man, he's one of those artists that makes me proud to be in the UK 💂

Each band only had twenty min set.. They had to fit their mega hits into that time frame. They had a traffic light set up on the side of the stage letting them know how much for time they had. Queen's roadie went out and bought clocks so during rehearsal for Live Aid so they could time it too a tee. Now that's dedication.

And above all already said, on this day Freddie had severe laryngitis and was told by his personal doctor not to perform, but did he listen??? No!!! Thank you for that, Freddie 😍😍😍 As said later, in his own words, singing that day was like swallow little pieces of glass. Can you imagine? And yet he didn't want to disappoint everybody (the band name didn't appear on the tickets), he sang like a LEGEND, and the whole band, those amazing 4 gave a legendary performance. They only had 20 mins to Rock the crowd and THAT they did!!👑 For 20 minutes Queen ruled England my man.. and yes thats their Orginal song WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. What makes Freddie's performance even more impressive is the fact that, not only was he singing with nodules on his vocal cords, which made singing painful and the high notes difficult to hit, but he was diagnosed with laryngitis the day before the concert. His doctor recommended that he cancel, but he chose to perform and make history.

Brian May's most famous guitar was built with his dad at home, from unusual materials. It has a name, The Red Special. It even has its own Wikipedia entry.

You'll notice during Brian's solo in Crazy Little Thing Called Love that Freddie goes to each side of the stage and points to people in the audience, motioning for them to stand up and clap. The audience did whatever he told them to. There is no better front man, IMHO. That, and their immense talent is why there will never be a better live band than Queen. This was a live show viewed by 1.9 Billion around the globe in addition to 72k in Wembley Stadium in London and 90k in JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. They would switch back and forth between the two venues as well as other live shots from other concerts around the world. Toward the end of the twenty minutes, the light on the stage turns yellow. If you don't finish before the time is up, the light turns red and the power goes off. You can actually see the light change from yellow to red at the front of the stage at the end of their performance. Live Aid was a world wide charity event to feed the people that were starving in Ethiopia. Queen's performance that day was voted best live rock performance ever,

Live Aid was a 24hr charity concert for starving people in Africa. It was performed from Wembley in England (72,000 attending) and a stadium Philadelphia (80,000 attending) and broadcast worldwide on TV. Each artist/band was alloted 20 minutes for their set.

The ear things are substitutes for the monitors. They’re used to help reduce hearing loss and let the musicians hear what they sound like without blowing out their ears.
