Welcome to the first of MANY concerts on this channel, where I upload bootlegs of one of rock's greats, Queen! This is the first recorded concert by the band, a BBC radio broadcast of their concert at the Golder's Green Hippodrome in London, before the Queen I Tour. Being a radio broadcast, the sound quality is fantastic, and can pass for an official release! It's also complete, so we can enjoy it fully! The only flaw is that Freddie's vocal is buried in the mix.
The show is a fascinating document of Queen at their early stages before they broke out into the mainstream, and the performances are very heavy and raw. Freddie's voice is also in good shape, though he has some roughness from time to time, his voice back in this stage was more youthful and unrefined. Going through the songs...
"Father To Son" is a mixed bag as Freddie has some intonation issues throughout the song and strains an A4 attempt, but sounds good overall as he replicates the softer tone in spots well with some nice falsettos, and also hits a strong A4 during the harder rock section, "Son And Daughter" has some off harmonies but otherwise sounds great with Freddie singing the song well and doing studio phrasing on the "Cap just did not fit" lines, plus the instrumental improvs are outstanding, "See What A Fool I've Been" is one of the best versions ever, as Freddie uses a soft tone in the first verse like the record, aces the falsetto D5, and bursts out a crazy Bb5 after the solo, "Ogre Battle" has an insane feedback intro before the song, which sounds good, though Freddie strains the first chorus A4s he pulls off the rest very well and aces the A4 on "Forever MORE" (Plus he hits a random A5 in the intro), "Liar" is an excellent version as Freddie goes for the B4 on "Liar" (Though he goes flat on it), and aces the falsetto bit afterwards, plus the musicmanship is tops, and the closing "oldies" medley of "Jailhouse Rock/Stupid Cupid/Be Bop A Lula/Big Spender/Bama Lama Bama Lou" is excellent with all four members in top form, though Freddie struggles on the A4s in the "Stupid Cupid" section he sounds excellent on the rest, hitting lots of solid A4s throughout and even going for a C5 in "Bama Lama Bama Lou"!
ENJOY!
NOTE: The DJ banter throughout is amusing!

People who listened to Queen's later stuff would never suspect that these guys rocked this hard in their early years. This is my favorite period for Queen music. No one rocked as hard as Queen in the early days. I was 13 years old and I loved the band from the time I dropped the needle on their first record.

Its funny because in the earlier days alot of the British people piss'd and moaned about QUEEN being too heavy, loud and raunchy. Forcing them to soften up and change their earlier aggressiveness (Brian writes about it in the song "Some Day One Day"). But I love it! Queen, Queen II, and Sheer Heart Attack are some heavy metal's best 70s albums in the world. However, Brian May would still keep the hard rock/metal torch going throughout the years. *Fun Fact: The song JESUS is the first heavy metal Christian song. Pre-dating Petra and Stryper.

@@RichWards-Wins I got to see them live when Night at the Opera came out. It was a fantastic show. Night at the Opera was the beginning of the end of the metal period. I still liked them after that but they never rocked hard again like they did on those first three records.

Loved Queen from the moment I first heard them. That was in '73. We had a DJ in our rock cafe, he worked in an import record store in Amsterdam and he had a nose for good rock mus8c. He played ZZ Top with La Grange and waiting for the bus, Sweet home Alabama. Yes in '73. And then a band we didn't new. Only one track, Keep yourself alive. So I asked him who that band was. He showed me the record. A singer in a spotlight and the name Queen on it. Nothing more. Bought the album the next day and all the albums after that, till they started playing disco. Saw all their first 6 or 7 shows the played in Holland, at Rotterdam, Ahoy. Front row seats! After Killer Queen they became known and played two shows in a row. Can you imnagine that? Seeing Queen live tonight andcagain, tomorrow? As a guitarist I still think Brian is The Master. That's how we called him. His vibrato is unique. Never met him, but you never know what will happen one day?

Yes, Queen was big in the Netherlands. Really big. But only after the release of Killer Queen. That was nr 1 in the charts in Holland. But we learned about Queen after their first album came out. We first heard it in our 'rock cafe'. Saturday night thete was a local band okaying, but thursday, friday and sunday we had a DJ who worked in an import recordshop. He had all the new rock releases. We heard ZZ Top with La Grange, Lynerd Skynerd with Sweet home Alabama and Queen with Keep yourself alive long before the big audience became aware of them. But Queen was big in Holland after Killer Queen and remained that big untill today. But the good thing was that we saw them first row manier times and it was so anazing! I have a picture, shot with a cheap camera, no telelens during a concert. It's actually a failliet, because it's two pictures over each other. The film wasn't transporter by accident. So I have Brian way, playing right in front if me, eith John Deacon to the left and the drums behind Brian, but over that picture Freddy in his classical pose, one leg with bended knee lifted up, mic in his hand with half the mic stand and his head tilted backwards just right of Brian. Picture for an album cover!!

15 years old, my first ever gig. Mott @ Hammy odeon 14th December 1973. It was a double gig in those day, you got a matinee & an evening show, so Mott & Queen played twice in a night. I had a later ticket and Queen came on second time at about 8:30. They had to play a couple of extra songs cos Mott weren't ready to go back on. They did Liar and Keep yourself alive a second time. Plus Queen came on at the end of Mott's show and sang backup vocals to Dudes. For an ankle biter like me, a first ever gig that ended near 1 in the morning with the curtain coming down whilst Mott carried on paying was pure fucking anarchy. Not a bad intro to R 'N' R.

Generally when you look at someone like Mercury with such tremendous vocal talent, you want to see him exert himself even more and strive for all the studio notes. But really most of all they just sound amazing when he hits them lol

Marie Grimes Well he sets quite a high standard on the albums and I feel that it’s interesting to compare. Also it just sounds better when he hits those soaring heights.

There were shows early on where he was perfect, hitting every note. I was at one in 1975. I think that is why there is the critique. Also he had the ability to sing opera which requires "perfect" singing. The power of his voice is heard here more toward the end of the show where he was really getting into the groove. I have a bootleg tape somewhere from the early 70's with perfect renditions of Liar, father to sun, white queen, 39, & others that would give me goosebumps when listened to through headphones. The vocals on that performance were the best I have ever heard. I have searched the internet for that concert b ut have never found it. One day it might show up. To hear that show you would understand the level to which people held Fredie Mercury's singing. Great question, I think they were one of the most original incredible bands to come out of London, as great as Zepelin. The decline came after News of the world album, IMO when their musical style changed.

Seems like they were giving their *Queen II* tracks a bit of a test drive before the album's release in '74. The only *Queen I* song there is *Liar* which is understandable as that song is an underrated gem like *Ogre Battle* [Yeah, the others are good too of course. I just have a soft spot for Liar and Ogre Battle O_o ] . Queen need a new Greatest Hits album with songs like these on them. I wish I could have seen them perform fml.

Iff we think about Queen 20 years period 1971-1991 they start as a semi amateur ,underground band from 1971 to 1973 , after their first 3 álbuns they have moderate sucess and they explode with "night at the opera" after that 11 years as a massive band with gigantic live shows , and then the last 5 years because off Freddie health they were not playng live and kinda become again a underground band. 10 off the 20 years were struggling with hard dificulties .....got give then credit

I guess they wanted to show off fresh material but still

The only song from Queen II that hadn't released by that point was the Procession/Father to Son combo, all the others were songs that they had been playing for at least some time before, they just hadn't been recorded for Queen I (I think "See What A Fool I've Been" even predates Queen as a band, I think it was played by Smile). The only odd exclusion would be Keep Yourself Alive, but my guess would be that, since this was made for a radio program, they only had a limited time, and they prioritized having a proper intro with Procession/Father to Son over Keep Yourself Alive in the setlist. Aside from that, it isn't terribly different from what they had been playing so far. The other songs you mention both require piano to be played, and they didn't have one on stage yet (also, Seven Seas of Rhye didn't really exist so far, the properly recorded final version was made for Queen II).

Thanks for this. I have had this gig on tape since the '80's. Your version s much cleaner. Also complete unlike the BBC Sessions version which is heavily and badly edited. In a way, I lie that Freddie's vocals are a bit lower in the mix and the drums are up in the mix. It really gives you the feeling that you are in that hall, which was 5 miles from my old family home in Willesden. This was recorded 13 months before I was born.

@@user-hy5jy7sf9j AIDS didn't come until the early '80s, though the infections started in the late 1970s. I was born in 1963 and I can tell you in the 1960s and 70s there was an awful lot of sexism and racism, still is. But in the late 1960s and 1970s western USA there wasn't nearly as much racism as in other parts of the country. And no one cared about LGBTQ as much, either. It was the time of the sexual revolution. Now THAT was something to live through! Things were very free until AIDS really came to light. There was herpes, but as long as you really looked at your partner that risk was reduced a bit, and it wouldn't kill you. I'm glad I lived through those years. Funny, though, my mom always told me I should have been born ten years earlier, based on the music I liked and I would have loved being old enough to go to all the protests, and been more active in politics. It was a really different time. No matter when I was born, though, I know I'd be a queen fan. Been one since 1975. Had I been born earlier I could have more easily gone to concerts with Freddie! I would have had my own car!
@user-hy5jy7sf9j
@user-hy5jy7sf9j 3 года назад
awarenessvillage Well, I was not born yet during that time period so most of the information I know about it is from what I've read or information from relatives that did live through it. I do know about the sexual revolution but from what I know I believe it didn't happen until the 70s so lgbt teens probably struggled a lot in the 50s/60s, including freddie There were many issues with the draft for the war, my relatives knew people who mutilated their fingers to avoid the draft. My point is that no era is perfect and even though some young people wish they'd been alive then they might change their mind if they actually went through it. I think people tend to form an idyllic view of history sometimes and it's full of nostalgia for people so they gloss over the negatives. Just out of curiosity though, what queen concerts did you attend and how did it go? I've always found it interesting to hear from people who were there at the time.
