As a former deck officer, the Captain isn't the one who has control of the bridge at all times. On most ships two officers stand watch with QMs/Bosuns (depending on company) who follow the officers orders and keep lookout. Additionally, radar. Additionally the Mk1 eyeball (keeping watch from aforementioned deck staff). Additionally, sea lane control. Additionally, anti collision systems, with redundancies. If need be you just get them on the sat phone or radio and ask their intentions. But it's just a fun simulation so don't stress or worry!

I love that cargo ship really beutifull. So many detail.

The captain of the cargo ship was taking a big dump and left the helm on autopilot but he had eaten taco bell the night before and his gaseous emissions drowned out the sound of the collision alarm. At the same time, the Queen Mary captain was having his tea and crumpets while watching a croquet tournament on the tele. I was in the bar of the queen mary just prior to the collision chatting with two hefty girls with a strong English accent. I said "are you ladies from England?" One of them says "it's Wales you wanker" so I said "I'm sorry, are you whales from England?" so one of them threw their bangers and mash at me. Just after that we felt the collision and the bow of the freighter burst through the bulkhead and pinned the fatter of the two whales against the bar.

Interesting, but what does the captains leaving the bridge have to do with the collision? Ships have multiple levels of responsibility.

The captains leaving the bridge doesn't automatically make the ship's blind and leadershipless. It wouldn't cause two ships to crash. Come up with something better, like a communication error (Andrea Doria and M.V. Stockholm) or incriment weather (RMS Empress of Ireland and Nantucket Lightship), or if you wanna go for the mysterious route, just do something like the Halifax explosion where nobody actually knows what happened.

As a boat owner and an inveterate cruiser (45+) I have been on the bridge of a number of cruise ships. There is generally a crew of three ( second officer and two ratings) manning the bridge AT ALL TIMES. The Captain's cabin is within a minute walk of the bridge. There are two radars running at all times as well as a satellite ship identification system called AIS which gives watch standers info as to the course, speed size, and cargo of ships at sea. No doubt at night there may be third world merchant ships plying the sea lanes with sleepy helmsmen and quartermasters, but no cruise line that values its reputation is going to risk it by hiring captains who run that loose a ship. The Captain of the Costa Concordia was hot-dogging it when he ran his ship on the rocks. He is still in jail. PS: the graphics of ship collision wouldn't pass muster for a cheap comic book.

I am glad that someone has shown what could happen to this top heavy monstrosity. People forget that had Costa Concordia been in deep water, every soul on board would have perished because there would not be time to launch any of the lifeboats and even if they could, because of the build construction of the ship, the listing would rrender the lifeboats useless anyway.
