It was recorded at Trident Studios, AIR Studios and Wessex Sound in London and Rockfield Studios in the English countryside. The band had established their unique sound with the help of innovative production techniques. Their last album had a strong progressive rock influence, while this one was more like their hard rock debut. It was their breakthrough on the strength of the hit "Killer Queen" written by Freddie Mercury about a high-class Parisian lady of the night.
