Queen Victoria and her consort Albert have one of the most fascinating stories in English history. Victoria came to the throne at only 18, after a sheltered childhood. The handsome Albert of Saxe Coburg was an instant attraction for Victoria, who admired his kindness and intellect. With Victoria’s power and Albert’s cunning, the two created a more technologically advanced England. Sadly, Albert died at the young age of 42, leaving Victoria with 9 children and deep in mourning. England, growing to the height of its size, still flourished despite a withdrawn Queen. Today, we’ll revisit the tragic love story, and of course talk about what Victoria and Albert really looked like, along with re-creations of them young, before photography.

I can't imagine how heartbreaking it is. That's why I always felt bad for Victoria: she didn't have anyone close to her growing up, her mother and John Conroy were cruel and abusive, and then she falls head over heels for Albert, only for him to die in a tragic illness. Now modern medicine could probably save Albert. I have a book that mentions one of her jubilees, and she writes how she's "all alone" without Albert. :

We should I think not forget about John Brown. It is reported that they would walk hand in hand. Exchange valentine with each other’s pictures in them. Brown gave the queen his mother’s wedding ring. And Victorias personnel chaplain said on his deathbed that he secretly married them off.

There was one book I read, when she and Albert had a bad falling out, Albert shut himself into his room, Victoria knocked on the door, he said " Who is it ?" Victoria said " The Queen of England let me in " Albert didn't. She went away and came back, knocked again. She said " Albert it's your little wife ." Albert then quickly answered the door and took her into his arms.

I read this also. She could be very "imperial" when angry even though she was very petite in height. When she finally went into the room after saying "its your little wife", they made up and he showed her what he had been doing while she was outside of the door pacing and banging and crying, he had been sketching the scene outside of one of the windows. "I was going to give it to you," Albert said, "as a memento of the day you locked me in my sitting room." Lol

Unfortunately there can be no truth in that. Why would she refer to herself as “Queen of England” when there is no such title? She was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India. The last Queen of England was Queen Anne about 300 years ago.

According to Lady C, the attractive "traits" of his family also inherited by the men in their legacy were very powerful. Also, she was a very sensuous woman, but above all, Albert knew that while she was pregnant and delivering a baby and recovering from the process, he handled royal affairs. He, as the Consort of the Queen was one of her Counsellors of State. He loved it. He did her job and loved it. A very progressive man.

Everything I've ever read about Prince Albert has convinced me that he was a very good man. Of course, Queen Victoria must have loved him very much. I've heard that quote from her diary after their wedding night before and it's always struck me how she wrote that she had never even hoped to feel as much love and affection as he showed her. It's both a sad clue to how deprived of love her childhood had been, but also a clue to just how wonderful Albert must have been. It was 1840 after all, and one can't help but think that perhaps not every new bride felt as positively about the wedding night after it took place. The reigning sexism and misogyny of the time, the lack of sex education, and especially among the royal and aristocratic classes, the push to marry who was "suitable", rather than the choice of your heart, probably affected many marriages negatively. They were fortunate that they were able to form such a partnership that was both suitable as far as society was concerned but also based on real love and affection.

I have read every biography of Queen Victoria and she is one of my favorite historical characters. The pictures of Albert and Victoria celebrating Christmas did much to influence how it is celebrated today, especially in using the Christmas tree. Albert was a man ahead of his time, and I can't help but wonder if he had lived longer he might have influenced the course of European history and maybe prevented World War I. As an historian who focuses on European Royalty I need to mention Victoria wasn't Queen of England but the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. England and Scotland were joined together in 1707 with the Act of Union creating the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801 Ireland, which had been a separate kingdom since the reign of Henry VIII, was formally joined to Great Britain and the name of the kingdom became the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the monarchs title reflected these changes.

Princess Beatrice is like her doppelgänger now. Princess Beatrice’s bearing is also very regal now after she’s become a mother. I hope she becomes a working royal 👸🏻 and revive her great great great (don’t know how many greats that is) grandmother’s style. 👑

Watching this was beautiful and listening to the history of Queen Victoria and her beloved Prince/King Albert is intriguing. But I did notice that when you did the first Queen Victoria to make her look more realistic she's prettier in your version then the portrait. And the modernized version of Queen Victoria blew me away because of the strong resemblance in Queen Elizabeth's granddaughters to that modernized portrait you did of Queen Victoria. At this moment May Queen Elizabeth rest in peace whom she broke Queen Victoria's record on the throne Queen Elizabeth was Queen for 70 years. Awesome beautiful pics.

I was thinking…The painted portraits where they are in their formal Queen and King apparel are going to be much different than the black and white grainy photos where they are more dressed casually. Either way, they were a stunning couple. Their history is fascinating. Its so sad Prince Alberts life ended so premature.

Not just the reconstructions, but your balanced, intelligent, empathetic and well-researched views on historical figures are just a gem. This is especially important for the women, which history is not necessarily fair to, precisely their legacy may be been smeared by those with hostile intentions (as you'd mentioned in Anne Boleyn's video).
