This video has been made to help you understand Multi-lane Roundabouts in particular the lanes you need and when. We have used the Queens Roundabout in Farnborough which in 2016 had a 7.5 million pound remodelling to help it flow better.
In this short video we try and make Large Multi-Lane Roundabouts as simple as possible. Although the thought of large Multi-Lane Roundabouts seems scary. In a lot of cases they are very well laid out with signs and road marking. So, if you understand what to look for and what they mean. They can become much easier than you first thought.
With any junction, don’t be afraid of going the wrong way. You can always turn around and get back on course later. So, if for example you find yourself in a left only lane on the approach to a Large Multi-Lane Roundabout, but you want to go straight ahead but don’t feel like you have time or its not safe to change lanes. Just go left safely and then turn around later when it is safe. Even on a driving test it does not matter if you go the wrong way if what you do is safe.

This video is very useful, but I have to say: I hate British roundabouts with a vengeance. Look how uneccessarily confusing the roadmarkings are, and how lanes criss-cross and merge - 4 lanes become 3, 3 become 4 - and all the while you have to watch the road markings, read the signs, control your vehicle, and watch for other drivers. British roads.

Think Driving School I think I would mind less if it weren't for the fact you can fail your test for doing what you can *see* other drivers on the road are doing. Which is exactly what happened to me. But regardless, they should be simplified to avoid confusion, and I honestly think it would help drivers (and maybe road safety?)

I remember we had short five minute film snippets on British TV regarding driving situations in the 60s and 70s and they stayed subconsciously in the mind to this day. Bring them back for the newer drivers out there. They are so informative as well as being entertaining.

You've no idea how helpful this video is. I have my test on Monday from the Farnborough test centre so will be using this roundabout, and this is the one roundabout that always gives me trouble. It's great to be able to see it without having to wait for my lessons :)

Thank you for this video, I wished I watched it sooner. I've been driving over a year now and only had a couple of long distance journeys. On my commute to work there is a multi lane roundabout which I think is fairly simple but because I use that roundabout on a daily basis I am comfortable with it, next week I'm going on a long journey and large multilane roundabouts are a fear to me because I never really use them but after watching this video I am a lot more comfortable with them and have nothing to worry about, this video explains it well, great editing too :)

5:40 approaching to turn right from another approach road I note the 2 entirely different signs, one left and straight ahead only, and the next having left, ahead and turn right. Why is this? My guess is the first sign is for a major route and left and straight on mostly used. It is a puzzle though why both signs wouldn't be the entirely the same. I've never assessed signs for sign sake in 25 years, if I had this likely would make more sense ?

Great vid, I have a Qu: so if you are on multi lane roundabout turning R, and in middle lane you don't indicate R, (as ur position is a good indicator, But if in the 3rd lane(or far R. Lane) going R, you actually do indicate right.? Thanks

hello! i find this very helpful thank you but i'm just a bit confused at 5:48 - how did you know you needed the right-most lane for turning right? it's just that on the road sign (on the left) it looks like both middle and right hand lanes serve the same purpose so wouldn't you stick to the left of the two? i'm just confused as to how people driving on these roundabouts for the first time know where to go! thank you :)

Hi thanks for your question and its very valid. The A325(s) is the second exit ahead, The exit to the right is not mentioned on that sign for the business park so from that we assume right lane as there is nothing saying we can use the middle. Hope that makes sense?

Hi, this is a really helpful video recommended to me by my instructor but I just had a few questions where your advice seems to differ: in my previous driving lesson i did the lane change like you did at 7:25, checked my mirrors, used a signal and moved safely (no other cars were even around) but my instructor said that would be a fail and i should have only moved over to the middle lane, not the furthest left? then as i exit the roundabout, signal left to move across in the road after?

How it is on the video is perfect, and how a good driver should do it, what you described is fine too, but you leave yourself open to having lots of people passing you on the left and making it hard to get back to the left lane as you come off.

At 6:05 shouldn't the sign on left lane indicate 'left' as it is only allowing the exit of the roundabout and not going straight further around roundabout?

@@ThinkDriving Yea. Last week I was on this roundabout and got honked because I wanted to go to business park, and assumed that this lane is going straight and not only 'left' based on the road marking :( Does that mean we can't always rely on the road marking and must refer to roadside signs?

@@sujitjagdale582 sometimes they can be a little misleading, but if you look at the lines on the road too, they are directing you to that exit too, so it’s a case of look at all the markings and take the safest option, and even if lines take you a particular way always check it’s safe first 👍

I have done 20 driving lessons so far and still struggling with the roundabout. I'm catching up too slowly. Last time the other road user horn ne so rudely that I start to get panic every day thinking that it will happen again. Sometimes I feel like I need to give up aa I'm too afraid to be on the road.

Don't give up, Just ignore them. Remember they where a learner once so think of it as pay back time :) Sometimes people just need hours behind the wheel to become natural some take less some take a lot more but just keep going, the freedom you will get once you pass will be worth it :)

Thanks a lot. You explain well. I have an important query though: at 3:04, you say we take the middle lane for taking the 3rd exit to the right. But at 5:50, why take the right lane now? The sign says that both the middle and right lanes would have taken us to A325(S)

6:35 im doing this roundabout on my test which is in a few days - followed your exact instructions on this but my instructor said its incorrect! He said you have to leave your right signal on until you indicate left to exit. Can this also be done or is this incorrect?😂

As long as a signal is not misleading then it’s fine, but think about what’s you are doing there, you are moving left 2 lanes with a right signal on, Also because this particular roundabout is traffic light controller the people coming onto the roundabout from Aldershot are not looking at you or your signal to make a decision about going into the roundabout, as the traffic lights control them. So both ways are fine, but I’d say leaving it is more misleading than helpful. Good luck with your test let us know how it goes

Hi, amazing video! Can I ask how you tell the difference between a normal or a spiral roundabout on approach, based on the road markings? How can you tell the following up roundabout will be a spiral - with strict lane sticking rule -, or a normal one, where the general roundabout rules apply? This is what makes the confusion for me all the time. I can select the best lane, easily, but what's after? Should I look out for signs or road or markings or whatever, which tell me which set of rules I have to apply?

Vivien M normally only road marking when you get there will tell you I’m afraid so just be hyper aware on RBs you don’t know :)

Because if a rule with nee roundabouts that they can’t show right arrows on the approach to a roundabout in case something thinks they can go around the roundabout the wrong way. It’s a crazy rule. You still see right arrows on older roundabouts but newer ones you won’t any more. So looking at the words and numbers is quite often more reliable. So if you know you are going A325(N) for example you can get in the lanes that day that. Hope this makes sense and helps?

With signals, always ask yourself is it helpful or misleading? To signal left at that point, people might think you are trying to go down the second exit not and not going to the third so could confuse people. If you were doing a move like this after you had passed the second exit then definitely signal as it would help. All roundabouts are slightly different so it’s about making up your own mind which is best, the more we can signal the better, as long as it’s not misleading. Hope this helps :)

do you indicate when switching from the right lane to the furthest left when going across lanes?

What you need to do in these situations is work out if that signal is going to be more helpful or more misleading. Remember your position is a signal to, so if you move at the right times that can sometimes be enough of a signal. In the case of this roundabout if there where people following you, will they think your signal is to go down the second exit? As we want the third exit but need to move across lanes before we have passed the second one, it may then be misleading. To then add to this remember if we check our mirrors to change lanes and we don't think it is safe to move lanes we can always go back around the roundabout and try again. At the end of the day its about being safe, so going the wrong way is sometimes the safest thing to do. I hope this answers your question?

5:53 why can't we use the middle lane? as in the first part of the video when going third exit in this roundabout we used middle lane. This is the only bit that is confusing me.

Because from this direction there are no signs or road markings showing us we can use the middle lane this time. As you see from the road markings the middle lane from this direction only allows you to follow the road ahead second exit. Hope this helps

So under NO circumstance I should expect to be switching lane on a spiral roundabount? If i start in the correct lane, i will naturally end up in the correct exit with no issues?... Right?

If the round bout is set out perfectly, and your not doing a U turn then yes. The problem is there are always an exception to the rule, so keep looking at the road marking. some are laid out badly unfortunately, so what ever you end up needing to do, do it calmly and safely :)

BOB is Boy On Bike, Tom is Teenager on Motorbike. They do a lot of filtering and are vulnerable so watch out for them :)

GoodAdvicesForFranco you won’t fail your test in you got in the wrong lane safely and then deal with the situation safely either by going the wrong way which is normally the best thing to do. Or get back in the correct lane safely. Hope this helps

too many mirrors because NOBODY CANT OVERTAKE ON ROUNDABOUT thats why i think that is STUPID LIVING IN MIRRORS WHEN YOU NEED LOOK ON THE ROAD !!! and yes who drive with bike need be behind and if they're overtake on the roundabout then that will be they're fault !!!
