The Queensland Rail IMU 120/SMU 220 series represents Brisbane's third generation of electric multiple unit trains. These railcars were manufactured between 1999 and 2002 by Walkers Limited of Maryborough, QLD in association with Adtranz and replaced the last locomotive-hauled services on the QR CityTrain network and boosted capacity on the Caboolture Line and the then newly-opened AirTrain linking Brisbane City with Brisbane Airport.
These trains have a very similar external appearance to the Transperth A-series but feature very different propulsion equipment with modern ABB IGBT-VVVF powering AC traction motors. Brake valves were supplied by Davies & Metcalfe and are identical to those used on the second batch of Transperth A-series.
