He did not destroy his voice, whoever said that doesnt know what they are talking about. Hes still touring an sounds great. He did however, stop sounding so good for a while, but Id be willing to bet it was on purpose since it was right around the time he had all that drama with the band and then left. Their breakup was like a bad toxic divorce.

I dont know who made the comment that he destroyed his voice....smh, absolutely not true. Eyes of a Stranger came out in '88. The man is older now and doesn't sing in that register anymore. But if you watch some of his latest live videos you'll see that he can still belt. Maybe half a step lower but still powerful 🙂

At one point in the 90's, he started chain smoking and he also started a winery and sampled a lot of his own product. He didn't damage his voice precisely, but his habits really reduced his range and ability for the voice to recover from tours fully. As far as I'm aware, during the late '10's and into the covid period, he cut out a lot of bad habits and the inability to tour allowed his voice to heal somewhat. He just did a tour last year with his band celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Empire album and he was able to perform the entirety of that album and the pre-Mindcrime album Rage For Order with adjustments in pitch for age. He still sounds pretty good, even if the E5 will never come back.

There's some misinformation about Geoff Tate. He was a smoker but gave it up years ago. His voice did deteriorate in the late 1990s/early 2000s but he has recovered most of his voice in recent years. Yes, he's in his 60s and can't quite hit the higher notes the way he did in his 20s and 30s, but he still sounds amazing live. The man has a great natural voice and excellent technique. By comparison, the man who replaced him in what remains of Queensryche can hit the high notes but doesn't sound nearly as good at anything else.

Actually, Geoff was dropping the highest note on the "all" syllable of the line "No happy ending like they've always promised" by the time I saw the band live during the "Building Empires" tour in 19990. However, he does hit a high Gb5 preety full on during the encore performance of "Walk in the Shadows" on the DVD "Mindcrime at the Moore" which I'm sure is a lot higher and at least a decade later! Todd la Torre singing "Dilent Lucidity" is woeful!

Usually, Geoff has really great articulation! It's one of the first things I noticed about his singing. Granted, live performances sometimes aren't quite as clear. I disagree with the person who said he destroyed his voice by all that projection power. At some point ( years beyond this release,) his voice did decline somewhat. But he has great technique and support. I believe it might have been due to the fact that for several years he smoked (!!), AND he and his wife own vineyards and have their own wine label...wine can't be good for vocal chords....plus getting older. But then he really worked on getting his voice back in shape and it's pretty good now! YEAH! Michael and Chris always do twin guitar parts, and no matter how intricate it is, they are always totally in sync,! LOVE the WHOLE band! And what fantastic songwriters too! On the album, and in live shows there's an awesome longer ending to this song which I hope you'll hear sometime! Yes, BASS and DRUMS! WOW!!

A lot is made (and rightfully so) of Geoff's vocals, but not near enough of his bandmates and their contributions. Every one of them is a master at their craft. Former guitarist Chris DeGarmo, in addition to being a monster guitarist, was also an incredible vocalist in his own right, singing the same notes as Geoff and often singing higher harmonies. Almost everybody in that band also sang backup in addition to their instruments. Great reaction as always.

The band lineup changed and he adjusted down to the lower vibrations that were left.... people don't understand how emotional singing can be when you're vibing within a nucleus as opposed to fighting the vibe.

At 11:55: no, he didn’t destroy his voice. He’s 63 now and can still belt out those notes like he’s ordering takeout. He’s done some work with a band called Sweet Oblivion which kinda proves he’s still got the chops.

I noticed that your vibrato goes flat every 3 to 4 cycles on any of your reactions vids where you try to sing along. Granted, Geoff Tate's range, power, vibrato, and yes diction is unequaled and very difficult to replicate. Btw, don't listen to the noise about him destroying his voice . Over the last 3 years his voice has had nothing short of a miraculous recovery. For examples of his current voice, look up Geoff Tate live 2022.

His voice is far from destroyed I saw him in 91 do this entire album on the Empire tour. I saw him 2 years ago in Atlanta and he sounded exactly the same. Whoever wrote that comment is clueless

I don’t know who’s telling you he ruined his voice but that is not correct. He is still singing & still has a fantastic voice. He’s old, bald, & fat now but still sounds awesome. He isn’t with Queensryche anymore but still performs these same songs with another band. Search RU-vid for Geoff Tate and see for yourself. Not as good as he was but only because he’s getting old. Still better than most singers.

He did not destroy his voice and still sings to this day.. Also, the diction you referred to is off base. He was always one of the cleanest vocals around. What you heard was bad audio of a concert. Having been to 6 of their concerts from 80's to 90's I can say they are still the one band that sounded so much like their albums it was crazy. Under rated and SO MUCH more that you need to listen to of theirs

There is some Sweet Oblivion music that is pretty good that features Geoff Tate. Reminded me of some old queensryche. But you can clearly hear the age and toll on his voice. But he can still belt very clean. Just very strained.

In 1983 this new band out of Seattle crashed onto the metal music scene with a tiny little EP (4 song LP)...it was an instant sensation and had everyone talking...the next 2 albums got better and better until Operation: Mindcrime (their magnum opus)...the follow-up album Empire was also very good. Future releases could not live up to the earlier music, though. GT is an amazing talent...and in the top 10 rock/metal singers of all time (if not the top 5). Few other bands can match the sheer brilliance they had for 7 straight years...

Being a trained vocalist like yourself, you would truly appreciate the Queensryche catalog. You should listen to the album Rage for Order and the whole Operation Mindcrime album. Just to follow the EPIC story the whole way through. Thanks for listening to a band of my entire youth.

The only thing I didn't like about this reaction were comments about Tate destroying his voice. Yes, he has aged but he still has vocals that a rivaled by few.

I feel you kinda got robbed on Queensrych songs. It's interesting because I was thinking of suggesting Jet City Woman last night, that's a song that really shines.

He didn't harmonize with himself - that's Chris DiGarmo backing him on the chorus. DiGarmo and Michael Wilton are incredible together.

they were doing up to 300 shows a year every year, that's where his voice went. Geoff was not a smoker. You need to listen to the entire album.

I don't know where you got the story for the song, but there's a lot wrong with it. Nikki was a member of an underground anarchist group. The leader of the group was Dr. X. Nikki was groomed to be an assassin for the group, and Dr. X did this by brainwashing him and getting him addicted to heroin. Whenever Dr. X had a job for him, he would call Nikki and say "Revolution", which was a trigger word for Nikki. Mary was a former prostitute turned nun who would bring Nikki drugs from Dr. X. Over time, they developed a sexual relationship, and fell in love, presumably. Whenever Mary comes to see him, he's conflicted because he knows that she's bent sent there by Dr. X, but he's the only thing in his life that gives him a reason to go on. Nikki's final mission from Dr. X is to kill Mary and a priest who is a member of the group at the church. He goes to the church and kills them both. My Empty Room and Eyes of a Stranger tells the story of Nikki right after the murders, and realizing that he killed the woman he loved. He's eventually arrested and sent to a mental institution to await trial for the murders. Dr. X fled; he was never a real doctor. This record is viewed by many as one of the best concept albums ever released, and there were attempts to adapt it into a movie after it was released. It pretty much broke the band, and is the high point of their career artistically speaking. I think that what sets it apart is that the songs are great on their own, but put together as a story like this, they become an amazing story.

Tate didn't destroy his voice. He can't do what he used to do with the power he had, but decades of concerts, combined with age have to have some effect.
