I would semi-agree with this. I started with their EP (I actually discovered QR on a mixed band cassette I had with other "up and coming bands" so, I was exposed to them from the some "Queen of the Ryche" I think). Anyway, as much as this album is truly epic, Rage for Order was also way before its time. Very dystopian and disturbing and fantastic. I of course lost my mind when OM came out like everyone else, but for me, the pre-OM albums are on par if not better (if for the nostalgia factor). But there is no denying this album is a masterpiece.
Absolutely. And suite sister Mary their greatest song. 55 year old ex heavy metal singer here who sang take hold of the flame in 1989. Geoff and the guys albums was what I trained too. 🤘🔥
No way! This is awesome... Never seen anyone do a whole album. And not just any album but this classical masterpiece. 🤘 Thank you so much for uploading.
@@Kimobubby Likewise, and bringing up the videos is something I wish more reactors would do - the visual element, especially this album, is so important! Of course, I grew up in the MTV era. OMG, love this album! "Sweet dreams... You bastard." I'm subscribing just bc of this awesome format for one of the BEST RECORDS EVER!! 💥🔥
@@Kimobubby On my second viewing I heard you ask how we got the story in '88 without the videos, but we had Headbanger's Ball on MTV, where it was the most requested for like 5 weeks in a row - which videos I don't remember, and if I remember the album had the story somewhere, but maybe we just picked it up from the lyrics and the extra clues in the songs. 🤘😠🤘🔥 Going to check out the podcast now!
When the Grammy's added a Heavy Metal category in 1988, everyone was pissed Jethro Tull beat out Metallica, but Queensryche was the one that got snubbed. I love Metalica, I saw with Cliff Burton, but Mindecrime was fricken genius level metal. And, every song rocks and could stand alone.
Far superior to anything Metallica from musician ship, lyrics, singing then anything Metallica did. I like Metallica, but they were definetly pushed better by the powers that be. And we'll since then the Grammy have showed themselves to be nothing but hacks any way the same as the rock n roll hall of fame.
@@Grandmastergav86you speak of that which you do not know… not one single “suit” wanted anything to do with Metallica in 1988… I was an 11 year old wishing I was old enough to go the see Metallica touring with the Queensryche suooorting And Justice for All and Mindcrine
Don't know if you ever found the answer ... the female singer on Suite Sister Mary is Pamela Moore. She has toured with them on and off since this album came out, and especially on the Empire tour, in which they did Empire hits in the first act and this album in it's entirety for the second act.
Nobody talks about this: The album begins at 6:00 o'clock ........and ends @ 6:01.........that means the album is a retrospection in one minute of the character's mind !!!!
Sorry I'm late to this reply, but holy shit, that just blew my mind. I always knew he was remembering everything while in that hospital... but never connected the dots, that its all in 1 minute. Damn!
I love that this album still has the impact it does. The really mind blowing thing is the fact that they can do it live. Everyone but the Drummer does backups and Chris Degarmo actually does a lot of the high harmonies you think is Geoff Tate double tracked. At this stage of the game, no one was better live.No one.
What a pleasure to watch someone get this album for the first time .. the absolute ridiculous level of quality in every component. So awesome, ... this record changed my life. I hope it changed yours!
One of my favorite albums hands down. Excellent band and Geoff was on a different level that other metal singers, he’s simply the GOAT, no match in his range and talent.
I"m a hardcore Iron Maiden Fan since 40 years and i was very happy and excited back in '88,as they released their concept Masterpiece Album "7th Son...."! For me,back then it was the Album of the year...until Queensryche came around, Showing what a real concept Masterpiece Album is!!!
Queensryche (original line-up) is my favorite band in the universe! And I've really enjoyed your down-to-earth approach to the songs you listen to. You're honest, but not unnecessarily critical, acknowledging, in so many words, that music is very subjective. I totally loved watching you hear O:MC for the first time. And then I scrambled to find your podcast with your friend (who did a GREAT job of recapping each song. He's one of the few people I've heard that has really gotten the finer nuances of the music, lyrics, and overall storyline)! May I add that The Mission was one of my least favorites on the album until I heard it several times. Now it's one of my favorites. I don't know if it was by design or subconsciously done, but the part where Nikki is saying how his mission saved the world, and how they'd all stand proud was brilliantly done so that the music under those lyrics was belying the words. There was no triumph or feelings of victory in the music, rather regret and sorrow. And I agree, Nikki's starting to realize the movement he's become involved in is NOT a good one, but he's trying to convince himself otherwise. I agree that the title song is great except the chorus isn't quite as captivating as the others. But this whole album is truly a masterpiece in every respect. I NEVER get tired of listening to it even after 3+ decades! I hope you'll do more QR in the future. I like your approach and comments. I like hearing someone else's perspective. QR is a very versatile band. They always pushed out in different directions, yet always maintained that driving intensity and decided QR flavor. Not to mention Geoff''s incredible voice! There's one kind of sad but funny little snippet during the intro to Eyes of a Stranger. You'll hear one of the patients faintly in the background informing a nurse, "I don't want to take a bath!" Always makes me smile. Sorry for going so long. (I'm a little chatty).
Lmao I never noticed that patient saying that, and I consumed this album on a loop when it came out! I love his approach so far, too. Just got here... One of the few channels who not only played the whole thing, but brought up the videos! Queensryche deserves to be shared with the world again. Oh, Spreading the Disease is on - my favorite! Cheers! 💥🔥🤘😠🤘💥🔥
@@jenx4115 Hey Jen, "Spreading the Disease" is one of my favorites too! A bit gritty, but it gets the reality of Mary's plight across well. I think lyrically and musically it's the heaviest song on the album. What a fantastic record!
4:19 - I Remember Now 6:07 - Anarchy X 7:14 - Revolution Calling 12:41 - Operation: Mindcrime 18:08 - Speak 21:51 - Spreading the Disease 25:59 - The Mission 31:45 - Suite Sister Mary 42:24 - The Needle Lies 45:35 - Electric Requiem 46:58 - Breaking the Silence 51:41 - I Don’t Believe in Love 56:35 - Waiting for 22 57:44 - My Empty Room 59:23 - Eyes of a Stranger
The Montreal Canadians on top of it, Ryan? ;-) I met Queensryche at the time of The Warning album (high school). This concept album was literally a bomb when I got a copy... and learning it was recorded in the Laurentides (Le Studio, Morin Heights). Wow!
You could have reacted to the visual album or the Livecrime concert if you wanted visual. Most people don't know they exist though. I still highly recommend! The visual album is like watching a movie or musical. And the concert is pure Rock Opera Theatre and its brilliant! *Full Operation LIVEcrime:* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Moz_VkYv4Hc.html *Full visual album video:* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ilNOTmGWqDs.html
Great reaction. I'm gonna hunt down that podcast and check it out. It's very hard to place Queensryche into one genre of metal. The hair-band thing was purely the image - the way they dressed, appeared on stage, album covers, etc. You KNOW that was a studio exec decision, not theirs. What's funny is the transition they make in the follow-up album to O:MC, "Empire," Queensryche's MOST commercial hit. After the success of Mindcrime, they developed enough cred to write their own way, without studio interference, so their transformation both in sound AND in image from their previous album is stark lol. The term "hair band" definitely went out the window, and fans classified them more of a progressive metal band, not so much in terms of their musical intricacies, ala Dream Theatre, but more in their conceptual releases.
Thank you for that information and kind words. Here is the link to the podcast episode anchor.fm/the-worst-of-the-best-pod/episodes/Queensrche---Operation-Mindcrime-em6gmc
@@Kimobubby Thank you! I already found it and just listened. Actually learned something new from it! I always wondered what the chant in Suite Sister Mary was from. Now I know! Very informative. Thank you!
Sister Mary he does have a female backup voice in there find the video on that and you'll see and I know you know it's a concept song but the whole album tells one story I'll let your friend tell you what about that if he's that big of a queensryche fan he'll know like your video I'm new to your channel I guess the first time I've heard it and I like your reactions keep up the good work keep the reactions coming
Loving this video! Loved your reaction during “Spreading the Disease.” You could see the look on your face change from “these are good songs” to “oh wow, This album is on a whole other level.” Awesome! *Edit*: I just finished watching the entire video. I wrote the above RIGHT after Spreading the Disease had finished. Ahahaha! I KNEW that song hit you on a whole different level. Again, awesome video! Thanks for posting!
That is my favorite, too. It has that great... EVERYTHING! The way Geoff's voice hits with the guitar, the rhythm section that knows just where to leave empty space so it hits that much harder, Scott's epic drumming, yeah I'm probably preaching to the choir. 🔥🤘😝🤘🔥
Spreading the disease is as hard as anything you can get from the lyrics to the music. Thrash metal and guttural screeching on them or death metal or nu metal cannot compare in the intensity as far as I am concerned. Then you have the needle lies, as the Norwegians would say "OFTA"!
Wow, the snobs of metal had shrinky winkies? I'd love to see that! Not to say I didn't love them, too... But I'd choose this over any of their records, any day. 🤘😝
Extremely talented band. Road to Madness, NM156, Screaming in digital, and the entire unplugged live session on MTV just to name a few are pure genius.
Mindcrime isn't just their best album. It's the best album ever front to back. And I'm not a dye hard fan either. Also by the time spreading the disease was half over you were in up to your neck love it.
I love how you try to be snide and clever in the beginning and then you get schooled by absolutely the best band to ever make an album. This is the best album of all time and 2112 was fairly close behind
Among my top 3 favorite secular albums (I prefer Christian Metal/bands). My other 2 favorite secular metal albums...Back in Black...Screaming for Vengeance. Too many favorite Christian Rock/metal albums to list. Here’s a few...’Snakes in the Playground’ by Bride...’This Might Sting a Little’ by Disciple...’Stop the Bleeding’ by Tourniquet. God bless and Metal on!
Easily their best album, there were off on a few points - the Communist plan being pushed by some these days is a major problem but in the main this is frighteningly accurate for current day....Classic album or predictive programming? ;)
Well, while the the album's plot is separate, it is definitely inspired by "1984" by Orwell, so wherever we don't get the plot point from the album, it's assumed to be akin to the one in the novel.
You described me to a Q, I turn 44 in a couple of months, I knew of Queensryche but only Silent Lucidity which for me was meh. This year I started looking into their discography and they are a talented group. Favorite album is Rage for Order, but Operation Mindcrime is classic.
People in 88 that listened to this on repeat got it right away...I probably listened to this album 2 or 3 times a day for 2 years straight when It came out. I still love it...best album ever
It’s so great to see someone listening to the best rock album of all time, a perfect timeless masterpiece that is completely relevant today. But you really missed out, the concert was filmed in it’s entirety, it’s called “Operation Live Crime” and is the ultimate way to experience this rock opera as Geoff acts it out and you get to see a mini movie of the actual story, and experience Sister Mary
I went to a lot of There concerts and never heard of it called operation live crime Geoff has always put on a good show and it always kept getting better and better and I think all there albums are excellent even his recent stuff is good
Nice listen. I would be interested how you feel about the short not-really-songs and what they do for the flow of the album, even if I do agree that it would be cheating to make them eligible for worst song.
Ok, I'd swear that's David Bowie saying, "kill her... We have work to do. And get the priest as well." Guess I could Google it.. but I won't. Edit: I guess it's an actor who plays the villain often, forgot his name lol.
Rush 2112, Pink Floyd the wall , and operation mind crime three of greatest concept albums, then WASP the Idol and savatage streets which are more rock opera’s
That was so much fun. Im a big fan and in a band influenced by Queensryche and I know this album upside down. However I haven't listened to it in forever. I really enjoyed watching you hear it for the first time. I will say I thought the videos ruined it for those songs as videos tend to ruin everything anyway. But cheers, I bet I know which was your least favorite and I think its the videos fault. LOL I will look for that Podcast. Cheers. Dirk
The QR fan chose The Mission! Wow, I didn't expect that at all as its my Favorite song on the album. You picked OM and thats fine because you can really pick one song out of so many great ones. For the record: Michael wilton is also a lead guitarist, they share the duties evenly.
Dude, I'm posting this too early I guess, but are you really doing the whole album? How fucking cool! If you keep doing this I'll be a subscribed fan. No one does this. You get the whole picture of the message being sent by listening to the whole album. This one is metal opera. Only other one I can think if is The Wall. Too cool! Ps: my favorite metal album before 1990. Can't miss a song, must listen from start to end.
Yeah, I don't know if I could chose between the two. I listen to both more than any other of their albums (And I have them all, Tate era). The "Warning" is a bit of a concept album in it's own rights.
What's hard about picking favorite albums and songs with QR is that there are so many different elements to love in their songs, and they're pretty diverse in the variety of songs they write ... Well, it's just VERY hard to pick! But if I could only bring ONE CD to a desert island, it would have to be O:M.
