I picked up American Hippo because of you and I loved it! Thank you. A rollicking good time is a great way to describe it.

I really liked Gideon the Ninth and The Fifth Season. I would recommend The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. This is a classic soft sci-fi that has a race of fluid gender people.

I’m so happy that you mentioned The Queens of Innis Lear. It’s one of my favorite books and is terribly under hyped.

@@cynthiaholmes5124 I DNF’d Lady Hotspur, but I still own it. I think I wasn’t in the right mood maybe? I plan on giving it another chance in the near future. ❤️

The Inda series by Sherwood Smith has a lot of queer rep, though I'm trying to remember how much of that you can see in the first book when the main character is long. However the overall series has so many queer characters and types of relationships represented.

Wow I never knew why people had that specific complaint about Gideon, thanks for bringing it up! No romance is one of my buzzwords, so I'm moving it higher on my tbr!

Black Sun (Bisexual MC and trans and non-binary side characters) and A Dowry of Blood (Bisexual Vampires and polyamorous relationship) (more horror though). I am currently reading The Jasmine Throne, which is really good so far.

Hi Bethany. I actually just finished The Priory of the Orange Tree and really enjoyed it. It does have pacing issues, and I don't think it's as action heavy as high fantasy tends to be, but I loved the characters and the slow burn of the story. I'm a huge fan of Becky Chambers. I love everything she's written and can't wait for her new novella. And I just recently read The Fifth Season and really thought it was brilliant. I have books two and three ready to go, but if you are going to do a read along, I will wait and read them with you :)

I also really liked American Hippo! I'm always surprised when people don't like it. I'll pretty much read anything Gailey writes now. The Echo Wife was SO GOOOOD! I'm definitely going to check out the Queens of Innis Lear! My own recommendation is The Unbroken by C.L. Clark. I finished it last month AND NOW I AM OBSESSED. Such good character work and world building and I NEED THE SECOND BOOK.

I'm just reading The Queens of Innis Lear, actually, so it was nice to see it here! I was pleasantly surprised by Gaela's asexuality (and the potential of reading her as trans) and that really cemented Gaela as my favorite. There's arguably room to read her as aroace as well, which, like, yes please. (At least where I'm at, lol, I don't know if that changes. I'm about halfway through.) Also, Gideon!!! I read through a couple of chapters when I had it on Libby, and I fell in love So. Fast. Waiting for a physical copy to arrive now.

Some old school stuff I've been thinking of rereading - honestly don't know how well these hold up so YMMV but the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling and the Riverside series by Ellen Kushner. Much more recent - I read The Disasters by MK England & thought it was fun. Very light, filmic, fast paced sci-fi.

I also enjoyed The Disasters when I read it. I haven't heard a lot of people talk about it though.

I'd recommend The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson, I'm not a huge sci-fi reader but I adored it!

oop i've made the mistake of describing gideon the ninth as "lesbian necromancers in space" but you're right in saying it's more accurate to say "space necromancers who happen to be lesbians" LOL

I have read the first Hippo novel by Sarah Gailey. I haven't read the second one. I'll have to do that soon.

I just finished Priory yesterday and I agree. Really big pacing issues for me. It’s a very slow story. Climactic portions of the book are so short and the author choose to cut those scenes short and basically have the characters discuss what happened instead of showing the reader what happens. I’m a huge fantasy reader. This book wasn’t for me. I see elements of this book ppl may like but wasn’t worth the 800+ pages for me and that’s ok. Looking forward to read Winters Orbit

Then you definitely need to read in the ravenous dark by a.m Strickland because it features a polyamorous relationship plus it's a Standalone book I so enjoyed it I also enjoyed the unspoken name by a.k larkwood it has a queer romance it's a fantasy novel the sequel comes out next year 🌈💖💝☺️🤗

I love Becky Chambers! For the question of the day: if you want a fantasy with political intrigue and betrayal that tackles subjects like colonization and stealing children to become soldiers for the empire who invaded their homelands that features a sapphic uneasy allies to almost lovers to enemies to ??? I recommend The Unbroken by C.L. Clark
