They are just as free to cut off the speech! What if he starting spouting nazi or racist rhetoric... would that be ok? Why do people think their sexual orientation matters to others?? I don't care or want to hear about your sexual orientation. stop waving it around like it matters - just like I wouldn't wave mine. Love who you want to love - stop thinking everyone else really cares....
@@craig4451first off the first part of your response is completely irrelevant, was he spouting Nazi or racist rhetoric? No. Its a high school graduation speech. If you don't want to hear it don't listen. Simple. a high school graduation speech usually has topics about one's high school experience and about how it helps them grow. He was talking about his experience during high school for his high school graduation speech, as one does. And someone else's sexual orientation and their journey to finding their sexual orientation may not matter to a apethic person who is not interested but to people who want to be more empathic and understanding it's enlightening to learn about their experiences. Like I said before if you don't like it gets some ear plugs and don't listen, ignorance is bliss for some people :/
Is the school saying they have to censor their student's graduation speeches? Are schools teaching our young people that they need to sensor free speech just cause someone doesn't like the content? Very interesting.

Actually the principals boss probably hasn't seen the footage since he said they never told the kid what to say it's his speech and your free to run an investigation

And it still backfired . They never learn. This student has my respect. What kind of people are in education? Bryce is an impressive person. Ask for help. Many will support you.
@@JESUSistheTRUTH-ROBLOX You have the right to free speech but you do not have the right to condemn any one for who they are. REAL CHRISTIANS ARE TOLERANT.
It's very clear from the video what happened, this school is scarily comfortable silencing the voices of students who did not fit THEIR narrative. If it really was just a "mic issue" then why would the Principal steal the speech? I look forward to the lawsuit.
So a black man, who should have appreciated what discrimination is all about, goes and pulls the plug on this brave young man. Shame on him, he should know better.
The reason the valedictorian gets to give a speech is because they got better grades than EVERYONE ELSE, which means, everyone else should want to hear what they have to say and they should get to say what they want to say, within reason (like no swearing, but topics like mental health and sexuality shouldn't be off the table). There is usually another "speaker" who gets to speak at graduation as well, and, if the principal wanted a speech from them delivered through the student, the other speaker is who they should have had do it. Anything else is a lie. We are drowning in lies these days. Having administration force students to lie is where it starts and it needs to stop.
why should I want to hear what they have to say? That makes no sense. If Ted Cruz got the best grades in my HS should I want to hear him? How does his sexuality relate to the entire class?
There’s a difference in presenting a graduation speech and telling lies. If this kid isn’t smart enough to know the difference, he probably cheated to get his GPA.
This principal clearly discriminated against the student for the content of his speech. The principal is really stupid if he thinks that he can sat it was technical difficulties when you clearly see that he took away the students speech.

So, he went off script to speak his truth. I guess that's not allowed at that school. What if he was a person of colour speaking about that as his truth, would the mic be cut off then? or is the rainbow just too much colour?
Dude don't make this about RACE this is about stupidity and the Principle should be fired....for the same thing happen to a Black kid in Georgia who brought discrimination in America and the white Administrator cut her mic when her speech was about unit!!
@@Farandawayga Bryce didn't get to make that point. Judging by the reception of his peers, Bryce was about to say something in appreciation of the support and encouragement from classmates. Of course, we'll never know. I guess it was too real for the principal.

You don't think its inappropriate to be yapping about your sexual preferences at a graduation ceremony? Good thing they cut it, the weird ramblings would have surely haunted him the rest of his life.

There are just three kinds of people. Those who aspire to a worthy life with equal rights, those who support them and those who sabotage them. Imagine, a white principal had silenced a black valedictorian for telling the audience how his academic success went hand in hand with rebutting racial bias and discovering his true potential ...
YES PLEASE BE YOURSELF but do you need others to cosign your identity? Do you need anyone's approval? If you are confident secure and love yourself you do not need to co-opt the graduation of 400 students to tell your coming out story, or your stance on abortions laws, or your thoughts on how the election was stolen, or how you love your guns, or love your mama. It is about celebrating everyone's journey not making it about your ideology, your identity, or yourself. Perhaps he was going to pivot to the group, but that is not usually how the me me me version of the teenaged mind works.

Why should one student have a captured public audience to express their personal problems to and not the rest of the whole school? What made him think that he was the only person of importance.
GOOD JOB CAMDEN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, YOU JUST GAVE THE KID AN INTERNATIONAL PODIUM TO TELL HIS STORY, A MUCH BIGGER STAGE TO GET HIS MESSAGE OUT AND TO EMBARRASS YOUR SCHOOL. KIND OF BACKFIRED HUH BULLY PRINCIPAL? YOU JUST GAVE YOUR SCHOOL A BUNCH OF HATE BUT IT'S WELL DESERVED.

A career defining moment for both men. Hopefully, a real positive moment for Bryce and a career ending moment for the clown in the robes. Oh the irony that a black man in a position of power would try to silence free speech. If that had happened 30 years ago that principle would not have been black.

Why does the audience clap so loud when it was very obvious he wasn't finished speaking? Hopefully some were being supportive but others were either not paying attention or just supporting silencing him. No matter what, the discrimination by the principal is quite obvious with crumpling the speech!
“Mutual and amicable approval was reached on all speeches…” Hmm, seems like this district didn’t bother to ask the student himself if he “amicably” agreed to the approved speech. School administrators ignoring the side of affected individuals seems to be a problem not unique to this particular district, I might add.
People you guys better vote these types of people out because they are taking away people's voices who are different from they and you don't intentionally hurt a children .
Would be nice to see that principle fired, for starters, and a lawsuit against him and the school district for oppression of free speech and publically shaming a minor based on sexual orientation. 😐 Hit em where it hurts.....their bank accounts and other assetts. Money is the only language these ignorant bigots understand. 🤨 This wise and impressive young man took the high road. He has a bright future ahead of him! That simple-minded principle took a nose dive into a toilet bowl. Thanks to this internet age, that whole ugly scene is forever 'out there' for all to see, and remember.
Funny northerners think they are so progressive but in Florida at my daughter's graduation 3 years ago the valedictorian came out uncensored and celebrated.
WTF PRINCIPAL? I am 53 and Pansexual and I love this Young Mans Courage! Sue the pants off them and that will teach them to not discriminate. What they did was against Federal Law!
I like stories supporting lgbtgia+, however I don't think that's what this was really about. How about: Schools pre-screen student speeches in an attempt to control any possible damage to their reputation (maybe a student recounts a story that reflects poorly on a teacher or the administration). They turned off their mic as soon as they could tell their speech did not match what they had submitted. Maybe this was simply because faculty had no way of knowing what else they were going to say. What's the point of pre-screening a speech, after all, if you don't react when you get the unexpected? Solution: Freedom of speech should extend to students, even though they are but mere-- gasp!-- children, and public schools should not be able to demand to pre-screen student speeches. If that means students sometimes hurt their school's reputation, so be it. Transparency!
He did not uphold his agreement with the principal. Changed his speech to affect others. Not everyone has to hear his preference during this time. If you are who want to be only share with those who are interested in hearing it. Not the entire audience.
This truly hurt my heart. This young man maintained his dignity that the principal tried to strip away. You can clearly see who was the adult on that stage and it wasn't the man who unplugged, grabbed the mic, crumpled the speech and stormed off like he was a big man. Shame on him! I hope he's fired and is never allowed anywhere near young adults again.

Discrimination. They shut off the mike and shooed him away. The guy took the speech. He can't do that!!!! What if the student's speech was about him being proud of being black? Would it have been taken away??? He is himself; a unique creation. LET HIM SPEAK!!!
Who cares.there the ones making a big deal over who he does. How many strait people go up and talk about there sexual behavior. No one cares, shut up and get on with life.
Unless the deal was illegal and in violation of his rights. The school is a department of the government or constituent part of it and therefore is obliged to refrain from discrimination against anyone based on sexual orientation as per federal law. This is not different than if a wheelchair bound student was coerced into not mentioning his disability by school administrators and then made a speech about how his disability affected his journey through his high school years. He will win a federal lawsuit should he choose to sue and rightly so. If this was a private school that would be different. But a public school is bound by federal law in this regard.
He only agreed to the superintendents terms "Under Duress". I believe there is a clause in the US Constitution giving Bryce the "Right" to "Freedom of Speech". Further more. the Superintendent had no right to grab Bryce's speech and crumple it up! I believe that would be called "Stealing Property" Of all things, it's unbelievable that a "Black" man with all of the black history in this country would deny this kid the opportunity to give his own speech and not something prepared by some self appointed Nazi !!
My wife, at a writer’s conference, giving a reading to a predominately lesbian audience prefaced her reading with the fact that she likes men, but because she is a woman, identifies with the issues presented in the conference. I share this example where a heterosexual shared their orientation, because the lenses thru which we view the world, and biases we might bring along as listener can assist or detract-weighed in essence-to better understand where the speaker is coming from and for the listener a way to measure the authenticity of what they are hearing. That’s them long answer. The short one is yes, but it depends on context.
