The legend Quentin Tarantino returns. This time, we sat down with the filmmaker at the launch of his novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in front of a wonderful crowd at The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles.
We discuss moments and scenes in the book which were excluded from the film, why he gives us more details on Cliff Booth’s ambiguous past, some of Uma Thurman’s reservations on her iconic Kill Bill tracksuit, his 10th and final film and more.

Out of all the recent Quentin interviews this was definitely the best one! You asked so many great questions. You all read the whole book and came prepared good work! Wish Tarantino was like Scorsese and kept making movies into his 80s but fair enough that he wants to finish on a high note. Just gotta hope that Nolan doesn't decide to retire early :)

Still hoping he changes his mind. Scorsese is still making great movies and Tarantino should take him as an example instead of some of the others that he talks about (like Howard Hawkes.) There is absolutely nothing we have seen so far that would indicate he would suddenly start to make bad movies. The novel is a lot of fun though, so if this is his new career at least we’ll have those to look forward to!

I really wanna see his Star Trek film, and I think True Romance and From Dusk Till Dawn proves that a Tarantino film can absolutely keep its integrity and can be really great, even when directed by someone else who truly understands what he was going for. I agree with him that it would be a waste if it was his final film, but he's already written the script, so if someone else takes it from there, I'd watch the hell out of that movie.

A cool way for Quentin to close out his filmography, is if he does a biography on himself and his rise to stardom. Or at least a semi autobiographical movie based on his rise in Hollywood. Starting from his days working in the video store, struggling to make a name for himself. To finally blowing people away with his first feature, and becoming a household name. Considering he likes to mythologizing his own work. That would be a cool way to end his career on a intimate note. Kinda in the same vain as 8-Mile, or Get Rich or Die Trying.

I enjoyed the book. But it really doesn’t work on its own. As it’s own thing. Without the movie I mean. It’s got great moments. The Aldo Ray chapter was great. The final scenes with Rick are very good also. The expansions on the mythology of this universe are interesting, but at the end of the day it’s just a list of things that fictionally happened and it adds no depth to the characters or story. Just backstory, which isn’t the same of depth. Some chapters have such banal conversation and you don’t feel it’s different characters talking, you feel like it’s Quentin talking. You feel like these are some of his fantasies projected onto these characters. I’m gonna talk spoilers now: the Cliff chapters: Ok, as their own separate things, they’re pretty good, the stories of how he committed murder three times. The second one, I have a problem with. I’ll be honest. I was happy he was a Kurosawa fan and enjoyed reading about it, but c’mon those are Quentin’s opinions through and through slightly filtered through he he thinks Cliff is. Also the tacked on sexuality of each character. Knowing what they all think about, and mostly is about sex. What’s the point of saying someone had a shitload of pussy? It may get a giggle or give shock... I think in loosing the ambiguity, he made Cliff’s character less interesting and less enjoyable and likable. He was a straight up sociopath. He thought Charles Manson had a good thing going, he fucked anything that moved or thought about it, he wanted to kill you if he was annoyed at you- the impression I got from the film was: he was a dangerous sexy type yes, he’s mysterious, he’s zen, he’s content, he’s fair, he’s a good friend and he’s looking out for people. Now I watch the movie and I think, great, he’s not giving Pussycat a lift cause he’s looking out for her and he’s just having flirtation with her for fun, it’s not this thing anymore, now it’s he wanted to be blown while driving thinking he should have used the Manson’s methods for pimping... Rick calling the little girl in his mind a little bitch cuts off any sweet and tender moments with her. Look. I consider this as a 70s more provocative novelization, an alternate story. A rethinking of these elements. Cause there’s a lot of things that are changed from screen to book. A lot of great stuff too. With Sharon and Roman and McQueen- so, I’ll take what I want from the book. I’ll take what meshes well with the movie and the characters in my view. It’s a different thing. Enjoyable. Sure. But as it’s own thing... doesn’t work.

i think quentins work will eventually expand (kinda like the multiverse in MCU) as he gets older. other screenwriters will eventually grasp his work and well, contribute to his mutiverse. obviously, the trick would be having the writers dedicated and loyal to his stories. Take Vincent Vega, i can see ANOTHER writer expanding on that story. Or the wolf, or O-Ren Ishii or any other one of his characters, theres so much world building you can do with his characters..

I love this film both for its nostalgia and performances. However, watching it knowing that the press and Tarantino audiences don't seem to universally love his rewriting of history. INGLORIOUS Basterds blows away Hitler, and I heard a ton of complaints. Tarantinos' desire to do that was not universally praised or, for that matter, was it understood. ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD clarifies that. Once upon a time is Quentins' passionate recreation of a bygone Era that obviously meant a great deal to him personally. If you look at the movement in 1960s America the history books WILL tell you that the revolution of peace and love died the night that Sharon Tate and her guests were murdered by the Manson "family". This nostalgic look at that historic time period from Quentins youth makes this story more personal. Even tangibly so. So the naysayers who couldn't really get it when Tarantino rewrote history in World War 2 should now have clarity. The way he chose to change history in Once upon.... is how he wished it had happened. It's how he wishes innocence weren't lost.

It's always great to see (or hear) QT interviews, but honestly, this movie was not that good. I'm really baffled at how well it did at the box office. I didn't see it bombing like Grindhouse, but I thought it'd be a disappointment like Hateful 8. The Spahn Ranch scene was the best part of the movie. I truly feel like his last great film was Basterds. Django, Hateful, and Hollywood just missed the mark for me. I base my opinion on whether or not I can rewatch any of those movies and the clear answer is NO. One viewing was more than enough. I'm actually glad he's retiring after his next film. I'm just hoping he goes back to his Dogs & Pulp roots.

I think your problem is that you hadn’t watched it again. I fell sleep the first time I watched it because of the massive excitement and expectation I had for it…so I watched the movie twice and thought, I like it but I’ve got to see it again, then after the third time, I loved it… it’s probably my favourite film right now that I can rewatch all the time and unpick it and translate it differently, and now along with the book, it’s even better.

@@DavidBenidorm Once was more than enough and I certainly will not be reading the book. I've already spent 3 hours of my life watching it once. That's more than enough. But hey, I'm glad it grew on you. ;)

I feel strongly about Manson getting attention and I won't watch anything about him in particular. I'm glad that QT didn't give his character much screen time. Manson thrived on attention. The government should have executed him and the killers immediately instead of feeding him the rest of his life. That gave him time to amass a whole new generation of haters.

Quintin is so overrated. He started great and then he went downhill ever since..
