Apologies the Virtual Desktop Referral code has ended. Meta changed rules recently, meaning the referrer and recipient must now be following each other which isn't manageable.
Best video tutorial on Virtual Desktop on RU-vid. Thanks so much for making this - huge help for getting setup on VD with my Quest 3. I find your videos to be far superior to any other channel. You strike a perfect balance of detail and length. You provide enough information and detail/explanation to help the user and you don't leave out important details like others do, but you also don't waste our time with needless blab and over-detail. Cheers, mate. You earned a new subscriber and a like. I only wish I had seen this before I purchased VD to get the discount! ;-)
Using your video to help fix playing vr games via VD. Never had issues on quest 2, but the quest 3 is unplayable. It stutters and lags all over the place and I have no idea what is going. Unfortunately Im still unable to fix it.
@@eternalglow6483 Hmm does his pc have to support wifi6 if he uses ethernet cable from the router tho? Isnt the glasses the only thing that needs to support it since it rely on wifi?
@@eternalglow6483 yeah i just spoke to the people on virtual desktop discord, they said the pc dosent even need to support wifi at all, as long as you run through ethernet.
What's with the massive amount of stuttering in the last part of the video? 11:54 Also, you don't explain 'why' we should go through the hassle of using Open Composite instead of just using SteamVR? Is it just the performance? I've tried using OpenXR Toolkit several times now in DCS Standalone (via link cable, not VD yet) and I don't see any difference in performance with any of the settings. The only setting that has ever made any difference is setting the encode bitrate in the OpenXR Debug Tool. My specs: 4080 Super/5800X3D/W10.
Didnt help at all, all im trying to make work is making my hands work when I'm opening VRChat, along side with SteamVR not crashing when I'm opening it from the quest 3... have had the headset for nearly a week and haven't nearly used it since I cant find a way to fix this... Virtuel desktop was brought since I was told it would make it easier.. spoilers it didn't, and I'm so close to just return the damn thing... by this point its more trouble then its worth..
Very well explained video. It’s also worth noting that if you want even more detail rendered than what godmode offers, that can be adjusted in Microsoft OpenXR tools bypassing Steam VR completely. Using VDXR on DCS I’ll set render at 200% which is something like 4412x4412 and either NIS scale that back a little or override resolution down to 3240x3240. Steam never launches
Is it possible to run OpenXR and Virtual Desktop Streamer downloaded on the computer in a wired konfiguration on Quest 3? Or will Virtual Desktop only work if i buy the Wireless version in quest store? Very helpful video by the way, thanks!
So, is the the 6e router replacing the pcs wifi? Then the quest is getting internet via the pc, wirelessly, but the important part is the Ethernet cable is sending packets ie no bottle necking to the quest from preloaded games. So again, the router is the quest to pc via router wifi. Virtual pc cloud gaming on your quest? Correct yes ...no
Great video; very useful. However, I have a question - the motherboard on my PC has built-in 6E WiFi, but my Quest 3 only connects at 5Ghz. Any ideas on how to get it to connect at 6Ghz?
You say wired link is the best visual experience. The problem is I have a RX 7900 XTX. From what I heard, Quest does not support AMD 7000 series cards using the link cable. Is this true? But VD is supposed to work with no issues. I would prefer to use the cable myself.
Apparently, Virtual Desktop limits Streaming bandwidth to 200mb/sec when using AV1 10-bit, even if one disables dynamic bandwidth adjustment in the streamer service running on one’s gaming PC. Very frustrating, as I’ve a totally clean WiFi 6E 6GHz network, & was eager to see what effect, if any, going to 500mb/sec would have.
Yeah I'm not sure why that is. Perhaps there's a decode rate limit on the XR2 processors and Guy put that in to reduce user complaints. Only the h.264+ will go up to 500Mbps. The other are restricted to 200Mbps.
System i9-11900K, 32gb ram, RTX3090, Virgin 1gig internet, Quest 3. Followed all of your setup suggestions in VD, but FSVR freezes or CTD when hitting Fly button in FSVR interface. FSVR settings all set to medium graphics in TAA mode, also tried Nvidia DLSS. Tried various settings but FSVR does not like my Quest 3. I also have a Pico 4 and that works fine in FSVR and has never CTD. Can you help, please?
Great video, clear explanation of a confusing subject. One question though; what settings are recommended in-game for ACC to get it to run optimally? Do you leave those as-is (I also have a 4090 and have most settings on Epic or High running 4K @ 120Hz on the monitor) and do all the resolution / framerate / image sharpening etc via Virtual Desktop only OR they need ro to be dialled down?
On a 4090 and OpenXR toolkit on Quest 3 you should be able to run VR Epic preset but with the VR Pixel Density turned down to 100% & Render Resolution 100%, Mirrors 50 meters and oponent cars 16.
Thanks great informative video but I can't see how to run Assetto Corsa or any other racing game without using Steam VR which my PC doesn't like? I can with the link cable and open composite etc but not with virtual desktop despite following the instructions....
Hello. How can I fix the display of the virtual desktop performance overlay to the bottom? Right now it is in the middle and it is in the way. I know how to turn off the display.
Well, I did not go through all this for my Quest 3. I just got a USB Link cable to attach to my Quest 3 to play any PCVR SIM racing games. The games all work great for me and run all of them by selecting the Oculus VR play mode. I don't see a need for this additional piece of software to do my PCVR gaming. May work for you, but I don't see the need for it since I am just sitting down and doing SIM racing. Simple hookup, and all works for me. But if I ever do need Virtual Desktop, I know what video to watch again. Take care.
This is really for people that need to play VR wirelessly. Steam Link is pretty good now but it still runs via SteamVR which add a performance overhead. VDXR lets you bypass StemVR, for OpenXR games and is a bit more efficient.
I don't have any kind of router because i use internet on my smartphone for PC via hotspot over wi-fi. So would you say it would work well if i just bought one of those more expensive PCI WI-FI 6e cards with antennas?
No, the PCIE WiFi card setups do not perform as well. Check out the Virtual Desktop Discord if in doubt. The recommended setup is a gaming PC connected to an VD approved router. Not all 6e routers perform/behave the same. Either get this specific model or check what other users have tested successfully with VD is the best way.
iam using wireless adapter wifi 6 with tp link ax55, iwant to get dedicated router for quest2,what router do you recommand for dedicated one,and if i have to connect both router togheter to get internet on quest?how do you setup, can somebody explain to me what i need
Having a latency of 40 ms is it not to much? do you fell lag when looking left to right? using the wire connection to the pc you still have this latency ?
Even with OG link cable with dedicated USB3.2 port it lags. I use it for sim racing and it is relatively demanding in responsiveness but it is disappointing. Quest 3 is not made for PCVR.
For some reason my renderer resolution keeps going from from 100 to 80 and back again. For walk about mini golf it goes to 150. I have set nothing on automatic and set it manual on 100% but this it trows it on 150 for walk about and other games he just makes up a render resolution. Using the quest 3 codec. What I'm I doing wrong
in the setting I have max setting available 200MBps. When connected on VD status I see network throughput 760MBps. So any idea why, and if I can make use of full network capabilities? Secon question, how do I know which OpenXR to use? In general I have issues with Running Rez Infinite and trying to solve them...
hi sir, 2 days back i purchased quest 3. when i try to connect it to pc via air link the pc oculus app is asking to purchase it. is there any simple way to transfer files from pc to quest 3 ?
I wish that Link would be a viable way to stream, since I don't have a Wifi6 router and the router is two rooms away from my PC (which is connected via cable to the router).
Thanks for the amazing video. If you please can share your experience about the stability of the TP-Link AXE5400 wifi 6e signal. Is it stable and gives improvements over 5ghz. You know some brands want to sell wifi 6e routers for gaming like 4 times the price of this TP-Link. Thx
So, link cable for seated play like Sim Racing, but VD(that's a fitting acronym) for dancing on thots in VRChat. I don't think VRC supports OpenXR though. Got it.
Great video, thank you for these settings videos. I recently purchased the same TP Link Router as well. Do you prefer virtual desktop over using quest link which is what I have been using?
Pro and cons with either. Quest link is the easiest to setup and gives the best image. Virtual Desktop with Quest 3 gets around USB problems, allows for Chroma key passthrough and let's AMS2 run with the OpenXR Toolkit. It's also better for standing VR until the battery runs out.
@@HamVR So in other words if you want the best image and play for hours PCVR and if you want to play with out cable Virtual Desktop with good image for 1 or 2 hours .
Hello HAMVR, thanks a lot for your guide! I got it working with all games. But i cant run the SteamVR app, it says no devices. What i cant find in your video and maybe you can give a hint, should i make Oculuss app running? Also run set the oculuss runtime as active in the oculuss app? Because i thought you bypass the oculuss app, because this would be OPENVR mode... What is did, open composite, turn swith to open open composite on... then start VD streamer and i want to run the STeamVR app... but it says no devices find (quest 3) thanks in advance for the help! really appreciate!
To launch SteamVR from Virtual Desktop, once you've got the VD Quest app connected to the VD Streamer App on PC, double press the options button on the left Quest controller to bring up VD settings and press the 'Launch SteamVR' menu button on the bottom left. This applies to playing OpenVR (SteamVR) games only and the VD Streamer App OpenXR runtime should be set to 'SteamVR' or 'Automatic'. If you use Oculus wired link and you want games that work with Open Composite, then you want Oculus App to be the default OpenXR runtime, if not you don't need the Oculus app or for it to be the default runtime. If you want to use Virtual Desktop in VDXR mode, then you want to set Virtual Desktop to be the default OpenXR runtime. Either do this by re-installing the Virtual Desktop Streamer App again or downloading github.com/WaGi-Coding/OpenXR-Runtime-Switcher and then pick the VitrtualDesktop and 'Make Active' to make it the default OpenXR runtime. To launch Open Composite games with VDXR, then don't start SteamVR but launch the game from the Steam 2D library menu and pick the game and select launch in SteamVR mode (see 11:12) this triggers to game to launch with VDXR, but does not actually launch SteamVR.
@@HamVR many thanks for the explanation, highly appreciated I dont use wiring, only streaming, because of motion. The Launch SteamVR i did withAUTO and VDXR, both dont get to see a quest 3 device, is this because i dont connect wired? Question 2: When i use the openXR runtime switcher, i now set oculus as active runtime, but i cant pick the VIRTUAL DESKTOP streamer as active runtime? Do you? Question 3: How do you use the upscaler to 1.5 with VDXR? Because when i use link i can do it with the oculuss app, do you know a bypass or should i use ODT? QUestion4: You dont use a FOV multiplier at 0.78 and 0.87 ?
bro I can’t understand, I also bought a Quest 3 router. But the bitrate is either 300 or 250, I don’t understand how to make it 500 or does it depend on the card, I think 3080 and 5800x3d
Hey @Ham VR my Virtual desktop disconnects from my pc on the hour, every hour, just for a moment and when it does the audio in Skyrim VR cuts off, requiring a restart. any clue why or any fixes you know of? any help would be greatly apricated fanx
Hmm if it’s precisely on the hour every hour, could it be you’ve got another wireless device (perhaps a clock) nearby or time lapse wireless camera that’s interfering? You could try a different WiFi channel and see if that makes a difference. Also check on the Virtual Desktop Discord with other users of your router to see if that has issue. If it’s the one in the video it should be fine as that’s the one I’m using.
Thanks a lot for the video. May I ask: Virtual desktop app is available for both PC (windows 11) and meta quest3. Do you need both of these? It seems clear to me on the Quest3, but what is the Virtual desktop for on Windows 11? Thanks for a reply :-)
You need the Quest version for playing wireless on Quest. The classic version is for wired headsets, so that you can interact with Windows desktop apps and view 3D and 360 videos in VR. The classic version is not widely used in comparison to the Quest or Pico version of the apps with both use Virtual Desktop streamer app.
I plan to use the link cable to my Windows 11 machine for iracing. With the intention of just using virtual desktop and open XR and getting rid of the Oculus app to free up FPS. So will this work with the link cable as well and that configuration?
Hello, I just got a meta quest 3 and am brand new to VR gaming in general. This may be a dumb question, but do I need to be plugged into my computer to use virtual desktop? If I purchase virtual desktop, can I play steam games without being plugged into my computer?
Thank you for the video! I have a question though, how do you have your Mbps consistently at 2400 range? Mine has been jumping from 2400 to 1400 and not sure what the problem is.
Which router do you have? If it's the same as mine (TP-Link Archer75), create a different Wifi name and password for the 6Ghz band to the 5/2.4Ghz band. Also set the 6Ghz channel width to the one with the 160Mhz range.
Latency is usually lower with higher bandwidth connections. The WiFi standard and frequency will also affect the experience. WiFi 6e 6Ghz is the best option at the moment for Quest 3.
I have read that it is best to set the dedicated router as an access point, wire both it and your PC to the main router. That way you eleiminate potential networking conflicts between the two routers.
Might seem a silly question, but what sort of height and orientation are your router and the antennae set at (assuming its in the same room as you for obvious reasons). I have this exact model and my connection isn't locked at 2.4Ghz, kind of concluded I haven't got it optimally placed but I don't know how to improve it?
Height and orientation doesn't mean anything. You need to have 5g or 6g for it to be playable. I have a 6g and I can play fine from my basement while my PC is upstairs. No matter where u place ur router it won't matter cuz it's obviously weak. Ur gonna have to wire
Hi, very useful guide. Dont know if you can help, but in ACC the menu's and HUD are all skewed weird, in vdxr. Game runs great, just that. Through steam its all fine, but obviously looks worse
@@HamVR not a bad shout, I'll try that. Will also try disabling open xr toolkit. Do you run dlss? I vaguely remember that being an issue a long time ago but was fixed.
It's because it's not the PC capture, it's Quest video captured via SideQuest (which isn't ideal) so I could capture the Virtual Desktop menu info direct to the PC with OBS. Other capturing options include casting or recording on the headset, but this was the easiest at the time. The view in the headset is much sharper than Rift-S (having owned one) and better than Quest 2.
why the hell cant i just use a cable with my quest 3...? I want it wired and i just need a little Passthrough Windows for my Keyboard and Mouse... Quest Link cant me give this and Virtual Desktop is only wired... I want to game 2D games with it, I need very good latency and good video Quality no Artefakts.. Im so sad, I know this all would easy work... all the tools are there.
I bought a Meta-Oculus Rift S one year before they dropped their support of this product. The Rift S worked well until I updated my computer. Now two years later and after a year of Meta stupid suggestions for getting my Rift S working again, it's still not working. I have a $400 paper weight that Meta refuses to fix even though they say my new computer should not be a problem. I cannot recommend buying any Meta products due to their lack of customer service and having a chance of the same dropping of older products support. Meta basically has no customer service and only lip service!
You mean via an ethernet to type-c adaptor directly into the Quest 3? I believe it's possible but performance isn't great. I haven't tried it myself though.
RTX 3000 series do have AV1 encoding so i wonder why you mentioned its for only 4000 series cards? I dont have a quest to test but i was wondering if you were sure about it only supporting 4000 series cards.
Tried Virtual Desktop and just couldn't get it to not stutter on watching movies. No matter the settings. Even on low. I have a pretty decent PC too i9 12900k and Asus Rog Strix 3080ti. Ended up refunding it and sticking with Airlink as that just works. Shame as I can see the potential of VD.
Rather insignificant tbh. Playing wireless and getting good quality is worth it. Especially the wireless. I love swinging enemies over my shoulder and yeeting them in blade and sorcery. Couldnt do that if I was all wired up
Cheers mate! Bought that exact router, and it arrived today. Bought myself a copy of Virtual Desktop and was confused by the settings. This video was perfect for me mate. 👍
Help! Followed your link for virtual desktop for discount, it says you must be following each other on meta quest before accepting their link. How to follow on meta quest?
Hello, Is this Virtual Desktop app the same as before? I had one with my oculus rift that I purchased in the oculus app. Is this the same one or do I need to purchase it again?
I brought a wifi 6e router the TP-Link AXE5400, and it shall only be used for the VR and nothing else, so i should be able to go up the max bitrate, should i use h264+ or AV1 10 bit? i have a 4080
H264+ provides the highest video bitrate option and Is the best option if you are stood near your router. If your router is far away and you are bit rate limited (e.g. transmitting WiFi through walls or noisy WiFi etc) AV1 or HEVC could give you better results at lower bit rates.
@@HamVR Okay thank you for your reply, yes i shall be stood next to it, so bitrate will be a non issue, i just want the best picture quality as i have seen many people saying use AV1 anyway due to better colours?
