Whenever I was sick in elementary school and had to stay home from classes, I would lie on the couch and watch this movie multiple times in a day. This movie was pretty much my childhood, along with Road to El Dorado.
My mom wouldn't let me watch El Dorado (over bearing Christian) and instead played Prince of Egypt. Yeah, let the 5 year old watch the plague song from that movie... Lmao
What I remember about this song is how it initially seems to be a typical, orchestral villain song about how he was wronged and he wants revenge because he likes war/hates peace; talking about his ambitions. Immediately, he doesn't follow the tradition by not having a constant rhyming or flow (Silence!!) that usual villains do. It then goes into this eerie industrialized beat after the first half, remaining in it for the rest of the song until the very end, In that time, he switches from singing about his plans to doing odd poetic rhymes about rather mundane topics to talking down to his men. His men do this creepy chant of Bring on the darkness, bring on the gloom, We are the army of death and gloom before ending the song in gloating that concludes in a raspy whisper. It highlights that Ruber is so insane that he doesn't have a coherent enough thought process to sing properly, highlights the weapon-industrial aspects of war and demonstrates from the start it isn't a typical former knight banding with dumb brutes, but a lunatic that creates living, mechanical abominations that can't be killed through any means other than being reversed and later plans to combine with the legendary sword to become a mad god for the people. In the midst of the comedy, that is scary to think about.

It’s funny that at first he tried to sing but after the first part he semi tried and then all together stopped and just said what he thought in his mind.

This is such a crazy odd song from such a niche movie, and I am absolutely enamored with whatever genre (music-wise) this would be considered. Also hats off to Gary Oldman on the villain vocals; I can just feel his expressions and overall enthusiasm through the entire song, this is such a gem.

The same can't be said for the lyrics, it's deliciously over the top with evil, but to call it a song is a stretch. That said, it's still an absolute banger.
I like how the composer can get away with making this lazy, barely-a-song mess because it suits Ruber's character and Gary Oldman sounds so genuinely unhinged lmao
This is one of my favorite villain songs. Idc what anyone says. The point of a villain song is showing off the villain. This song does exactly that. Ruber is crazy and not right in the head and the song reflects that.
Wait It's a song? I thought the actor just went nuts and they decided to slap some tunes in it. I mean, that's almost what I'd yell under the shower when I'm sure nobody's home.
This movie wasn't always a musical. It was a last minute decision. You can see it in the movie, where he's doing movements that have nothing to do with what he's emoting. They clearly just slapped a few frames of sone of the characters dancing on what was otherwise just gonna be characters talking.
This should've just been a villainous monologue without of any of "singing" 😭😭 for the track. The instrumental (with the backing chants) SLAPS, especially the drums.

Best damn song in the whole movie. Imo Oldman is a natural at this kind of semi spoken word semi singing number. I can listen to this on loop lol. He makes every line so creepy. "Your were mistaken if you believed ruber was someone who'd crumble and leave". Ooof 😰❄
Now... Besides the horned king in The Black Cauldron... Ruber was by far one of the darkest villains in animated movies... Disney and non Disney included... Rasputin (Anastasia), Scar, Ursula, the horned king, Ruber, Medusa (rescuers), Ratigan (great mouse detective), just to name a few...

Has anyone noticed there are four animated 90s fantasy films with a female protagonist that feature a famous actor as the bad guy? We have Gary Oldman as Ruber from "Quest for Camelot", Jim Cummings as Rasputin from "Anastasia", Tim Curry as Hexxus from "Ferngully", and Jack Palance as Rothbart from "The Swan Princess". (For those who don't know, his most famous movie is the Western, "Shane", but he also in Tim Burton's "Batman" and the 1999 adaption of "Treasure Planet").
