But I never came across anyone who nailed it as well as you.

Stephen Smith First, thank you. I'm humbled because the men you quote are much smarter than me. This just a little song i wrote in my free time, and was writing it mostly from personal experience. The section you quoted just happens to be my favorite line. You also immediately spark my interest in all the references you listed so I'm as I type this, I'm attempting to look them up and learn more about them. Do you have any other books or informations on the subject you'd be willing to share? It actually took me like at least a half hour to write this reply because I kept getting distracted reading little bits about Induction, Popper and Fallibilism, and so on and I'd like to get some actual books on the subjects. I've already written down the one you listed.

elgrimfandango There's no need to be humble. You have a first class intellect. I should know as I have been a University tutor since 1986 and had seven years training plus post-doctoral research appointments before that, so I am kind of qualified to know good-thinking when I see it. One book I could recommend is by Karl Popper 'Conjectures and Refutations'. Although you may find parts of it a bit difficult, don't worry as this does not matter. It is always a blast to me to come across young people who have come to the same conclusions as celebrated philosophers and social scientists, just by reflecting on their own experience as you have done - and with no formal training in philosophy. I often find that my students know things that they don't realise that they know and it is a pleasure to refer them to 'famous names' who thought/ think the same way as they do. But what is extra special about the way you put things is that you are able to express them poetically without any loss of meaning, specification or rigour. You've got it. I would like to show your lines to my Final Yaer Project class tomorrow. If you wanted to send me your whole poem/ rap I would show them that too. Any thanks due are from me to you. I know nothing of your circumstances but your local university may have 'extra-mural' classes in philosophy available to non-registered students (ie made available to the local city region). It is not my business of course, but I think you would enjoy those classes and that others would value what you have to say to them. You are seriously talented and your thinking is a joy to read. I know my students are going to comprehend the point syou make which I would call 'methodological' and more specifically ''epistemological'. Epistemology is simply the study of how it is that we can claim to know what we think we know. Your point is that it would be wise to treat all knowledge as 'conjectural' and therfore UNCERTAIN and vulnerable to 'negative findings'. Popper believed that it makes more sense to search for exceptions to our theories than to look for confirming cases. For it only takes 'One Black Swan' to show that the theory that All Swans are White is WRONG. One exception is worth millions of positive results. And so it is ready of the 'trees' to be prepared to 'lose all their leaves' asyou put it. Problemms begin when theorists hang onto theories too tightly. You can let go of the idea that you are in any way inferior in your thinking to me. Your post stopped me dead in my tracks, and you can see that at least one other RU-vid user has come to the same conclusion. 'Serious dope' indeed : -)
