The amount of sheer disrespect in these comments is crazy! We should be thanking Hawking for his contributions to science and for his willingness to share some of his knowledge when it is so difficult to communicate. Be kind.

It’s crazy that this man was diagnosed with ALS when he was 21 and was only given 2 years to live. He survived 55. RIP Stephen you will be missed.
@losthepimp1742
@losthepimp1742 2 года назад
That was his motivation
@speaklifegardenhomesteadpe8783
Because of this, many years ago, the ALS website removed him from their list of famous people with this diagnosis. This sparked much controversy thru the world, from claims he's been continually replaced and passed long ago, but academia gifted hard off him for so long... To ALS families being offended and insulted. It definitely makes me wonder. But will we ever know? I do know when I was really into his work in the early 1990's, he inspired me to get into physics and I recall there was only one or two aids who could somewhat translate his communications which degraded heavily over time and I grew highly suspicious when they removed them, replacing them with this device which I don't believe is truly what we are lead to believe. It's more like they've turned this icon into a human puppet if that's even him. It's like they put a photo up and make computer play back words which could come from anywhere. Why not give him a man's voice? They could pick anything. But it's like they're trying to emphasize the technology as if to appeal to our mind that it's a technological authority and so whatever is said is untouchable and the final gospel to not be questioned. I would appreciate a research journalist totally unbiased with no agenda,... To do a deep dive expose on his life, who he lived with and who took care of him, what happened to the aids, interview them and get receipts and medical records etc. I just want the truth. They could call it a brief history of his time. To give his actual voice, which would be great in my opinion. I really hope he wasn't exploited and I really hope others weren't as well.

There is nothing bigger or older than the universe. The questions I would like to talk about are: 1. Where did we come from? 2. How did the universe come into being? 3. Are we alone in the universe? 4. Is there alien life out there? 5. What is the future of the human race? Up until the 1920s, everyone thought the universe was essentially static and unchanging in time. Then it was discovered that the universe was expanding. Distant galaxies were moving away from us. This meant they must have been closer together in the past. If we extrapolate back, we find they must have all been on top of each other about 15 billion years ago. This was the big bang, the beginning of the universe. But was there anything before the big bang? If not, what created the universe? Why did the universe emerge from the big bang the way it did? We use to think that the theory of the universe could be divided into two parts. First there were the laws like Maxwell’s equations and general relativity that determine the evolution of the universe given its state over all space at one time. And second, there was no question of the initial state of the universe. We have made good progress on the first part and now have a knowledge of the laws of evolution in all but the most extreme conditions, but until recently we have had little idea about the initial conditions for the universe. However, this division into laws of evolution and initial conditions depends on time and space being separate and distinct. Under extreme conditions, general relativity and quantum theory allowed time to behave like another dimension of space. This removes the distinction between time and space, and means the laws of evolution can also determine the initial state. The universe can spontaneously create itself out of nothing. More over, we can calculate the probabilities that the universe is created in different states. These predictions are in excellent agreement with observations by the WMAP satellite of the cosmic microwave background, which is an imprint of the very early universe. We think we have solved the mystery of creation. Maybe we should patent the universe and charge everyone royalties for their existence....... vialogue.wordpress.com/2008/04/19/ted-talks-worth-talking-about-stephen-hawking/

"I have been very lucky that my disability has not been a serious handicap. Indeed, it has probably given me more time than most people to pursue the quest for knowledge." - Stephen Hawking Why did this quote strike me? It reminds me that people that experience a serious mishap, are the ones that truly recognise and appreciate the value of life. This mishap/near-death experience serves as a wake-up call to them, something to ponder on when they're alone with their thought. 'What if that day was the last day of my life?' This makes death more tangible, more visualizable, closer to their sensation. In doing so, they strive to make life more meaningful, more worth it, more impactful. Focusing purely on what truly matters to them. Here, this quote highlights that the "quest for knowledge" as Stephen Hawking's true priority in life. And this ted talk was the evidence that he has made progress to pursue his own priorities in life. This truly made his life worth living. Relevant quote - "Death gives life meaning"

When you think about it, once you've achieved such knowledge, if he was a dousch, he would probably think of us as the cripples, rather then himself, as he's achieved a higher understanding of the world around him, and has ascended in knowledge in general, lol so did albert einstein.
@igotprettyboyswag

I see no knowledge.. i see opinion as far as the universe.. While I say that - I DO respect his opinion. He is highly esteemed and admired by many. Hawking is well educated and versed.. however it is important to note.. that's ALL most of it is - opinion as the universe and galaxy go. I do think comparing this man with Albert Einstein is like comparing an apple to a pizza. Of course.. that is my opinion - keyword.. opinion. Just like a rectom - everyone has one and willing to share it with anyone aiming a spotlight on them.- some don't even need a spotlight lol.

I disagree. With intelligence comes empathy--if he is truly intelligent he would not look down on others because he understands their positions as much as he understands his own. Think about it: it takes a lot of ignorance to judge others at all. Aren't we all born as who we are against our wills? No intelligent person would judge (although intelligence has many different aspects, so maybe emotional intelligence was beyond his reach, although I doubt it) others on something so trivial as level of intelligence--it isn't a competition, we learn so that we can progress.

He proved more than we can understand but we can still not figure out what this all actually means. I hope we can at least be respectful of not understanding a lot and take the responsibility by admiting it instead of blaming our shortcomings on his intelligence. He can only prove what we are able to understand. That goes for all the scientists as they will never be able to prove what we are not able to get

In order to go out into the universe we first must create a system of transportation which allows us to go faster than light. In my opinion the best way of achieving this is by creating a warp drive which allows us to bend space time so that journeys which are normally 60 billion light years away into journeys which take 2 weeks give or take. However to achieve this goal we need to understand how space time works. I predict that space time is the use of gravitational potential energy around galaxy's which keep solar systems in alignment and areas of space time with simply the depths of space in it is causing galaxy's to move away from each other. The force keeping the planets in alignment with each other is called dark matter and the force pushing galaxy's away from one another is dark energy. Despite the fact that we don't know much about these forces, I feel that dark matter is just a force which apples to entropy. With this in mind we could very soon have technology which would help us use this force to our advantage and warp space time to bring us to distant worlds. Afterwards we need to use dark energy (which could also be entropy) to warp space time back to how it was originally. If this is true then distant worlds could be at our fingertips. Like and share this comment if you liked the theory.

That's very true, however it's like on an aeroplane when the cabin pressure is even. If we create a warp bubble effect, we could pressure out the spacecraft so the pressure on the body would be bearable for us.

People who still believe in a Deity anno 2015 lack the ability to think rationally in my humble opinion. I fail to see the difference between God and Santa. Every religion is based on blind faith. And doesn´t the existence of many religions discredit them all? I think the beauty of life lies in the fact that it ends with death. Would a flower still be as beautiful when it´s there for all eternity to observe. Would you love your child as much as you do when you have the certainty that you will be together forever? I think not. The sheer fact that we are very much aware that time waits for no one makes it have that much more value and makes us cherish our loved ones so much more. To end on a lighter note. Mister Hawking is an amazing man and one of the best ventriloquists I´ve ever seen. p.s. If my spelling is bad it´s because english isn´t my maternal language. Have a nice day.

I do agree with almost everything Hawking's has described. He is like a hero to me and a living legend. It takes just a single cell of sperm to create a human being with a such a vast horizon of knowledge, imagination and a to thrive for complex reasoning to understand cosmological mysteries and the beginning. A universe of a size of a proton could cause this whole universe to create, I believe it but who created that proton? Whenever there is a dead end, they call it Big Bang. Everything in the universe is in balanced state. A scientist should never believe in coincidences. I am not arguing that there is a God who created everything who handles the Quantum Mechanics and mysteries which is still unknown to us. All I want is still some strong explanations which would reveal the true reason of us here in Earth which is perfectly orbiting around the sun and having the right temperature and conditions to sustain a life. Why there is no life in Mercury? Why there are no human beings or any living creature there who's body was developed in such a way that it could take a heat of 427 degree Celsius and they could live happily over there? We are born and we die eventually, somehow this explain the balancing of energy but there is something more than an energy. If our bodies are just materialistic thing I would rather call ourselves a potato. Intelligence is not an accident !! If any universe was collapsed and Big Bang happened, we are the result of it then would it be fair to say that it is a continuous process? Hats off to the Time Dilation Theory of Hawking's. I am proud to live in the time where we are having such a remarkable physicist and cosmologist
@salvor1
@salvor1 8 лет назад
Could it be so outrageously possible that that proton was just there? It is, was and forever will be. Intelligence is just a tool for survival, so it does not need to be a mystery. Also remember that the the hundreds of light years Mr. Hawking is speaking of is still a negligible amount of space. All the stuff was there before the bang, recycled from a prior, intermingling with adjacent, and morphing into continuance, with or without us.

Could the Universe be infinite ∞ like our number system with the positive and negative numbers extending into infinity? It seems to me that if our Universe was not infinite then our number system would not have the infinite structure that it has!
@nacho74
@nacho74 9 лет назад
Yes, the universe must ne infinite since one is able to apply the relative concept of numbers to the system of the free space-time principle of our universe.
@Karkenou
@Karkenou 9 лет назад
Read up on Orange Theory. In this theory the universe is infinitely expanding and retracting, in a never ending loop, similar in shape to the infinity symbol itself; with a maximum and minimum entropy stage.
@nacho74
@nacho74 9 лет назад
Karkenou There is many criticism to this theory. Because, the retraction and the new big bang is not perfect, so that the new big bang would be an extrem amount of time slower to take place than the one before. From this suggestion, it would follow that our big bang would never take place and we would never be born.
