Hello Dr. Priya - Thank you for all your videos! Do you think we should also ask a TMJ dentist about x-rays? I've called a few TMJ dentists in my area and a few do CBCT scans (which I think has a lot of radiation?) and a few do no x-rays at all, saying that they are not needed for TMJ issues. What are your thoughts on x-rays? What kind of x-rays do you use, if any? Thanks so much!
Hypothetical question. If a patient presents with TMD and it's been determined the root cause is severe nighttime bruxism what are some general treatments for this if multiple types of splints did not help and actually increased the bruxism making symptoms worse? Also, lets assume in this patient all possible common underlying issues have been addressed (sleep apnea, occlusion issues, etc...) but the bruxism persists, then what?
@@theTMJdoc Thanks for the reply. Yeah I can't say if it increased bruxism but the orthotic that I tried (which directed my jaw to where the muscles are most relaxed) made things worse while wearing it during sleep. I do think that in the absence of nocturnal bruxism it would have helped but instead it had a paradoxical effect. Really appreciate your videos and the knowledge you're sharing.
I’ve had Cortizone shots in my jaw because of the arthritis but I’ve never heard Cortizone in the muscle. If you can afford it, some TMJ doctors will offer you Botox in the jaw muscle, and that works pretty good for the headaches and the pain because it stops the muscles from contracting.. that cost me $1500
Hi Dr Priya! Your channel already helped me so much, thank you for your videos!! I have TMJ issues and I've been to a few places that recommended the NM orthotic, but didn't give much information about the whole process and what to excpect. I have a hard time to trust dentist because I have some bad experience. Can you please recommend someone in the Redmond WA, Bellevue WA (or Seattle) region that does the same thing as you and I could trust? Although we are technically in the same state, unfortunately you are too far away. :(
I'm sorry, I don't know anyone there. I barely know a handful of people in the entire nation. I know it's not close, but many people travel from Seattle to see me.
Thank you so much for your quick response! I'll try to think of how I could organize regular visits to your office. Can you please let me roughly how many visits I would have to make for an NM orthotic? Thank you@@theTMJdoc
@@tornavideok hi there! I really can’t tell you much without follow up questions and discussion. I’d recommend setting up a zoom meeting with me before coming down here so I can better evaluate if I can help you. Patientcare@tmjdentaldoc.com
Hi Dr. Mistry, I know that advice can't be given without consultation, but in general would you suggest that for jaw popping and asymmetry it is better to see an orthodontist or a myofunctional therapist, if I only could choose one? Wondering which one has more of a chance of making a difference
My question is, I know that I have had this for years, but I just cannot invest the time and money into getting to a specialist because I cannot prioritize this. There are too many barriers. The actual question is, what happens if it isn’t treated long term? I’m resigned to most of my current symptoms and muddle through. I just am hoping something even more awful won’t happen if it is left untreated. I hope that makes sense.
Your TMJ will not get better unless you stop grinding or clenching. Long-term, it could cause cracked teeth worn down teeth, Headaches from clenching your muscles, neck pain. Let it go long enough and your jaw joint may become arthritic like mine. In my opinion, it’s pay now or pay later. I got a Cortizone shot in my jaw joint for arthritis. I paid out $1500 for Botox and my jaw muscles to help them calm down. I paid for a mouthpiece to wear at night. I have marijuana gummy’s to help with pain when my jaw lock up. I’ve done acupuncture, taking muscle relaxers. This condition has been a real pain in the ass and the pocketbook. My medical insurance paid for the Cortizone and the mouthpiece. In my personal opinion, grinding and clenching is caused by stress, and if you can find out the source of the stress and figure out how to destress, maybe that would help even more
@@SgtD1981 Thank you. My biggest barrier is that I care for my adult daughter with Down Syndrome and it is just very difficult to be away from her for long. There really is no one close enough to make a day trip. It’s just the way it is.
What can happen if left untreated: The jaw joints can start to break down. The muscles will remain in a chronic pain/spasm cycle. All of this can increase pain and dysfunction.
Hi Dr. Priya I have TMD issue My dentist did something with my jaw from that day i am hearing electric sound while Swallowing and earfull. I am unable to find what that Electric sound is and is it dangerous as its so annoying
Hi Dr. Priya! I am from Seattle and I hope you can see my message. I am suffering from tmjd, both of my jaw is clicking/popping. When I open my mouth, I can only fit two fingers and I have to let my right side jaw pop before I can open my mouth fully, and when I close my mouth thats the time my left and right side pop/clicks. My jaw isnt in pain but I have tinnitus already thats bugging me. I saw a tmj specialist and recommended an upper splint I can use during at night. Will it reposition my jaw? Just asking your second opinion please before I move forward. I do appreciate all your videos.
I'm sorry but I cannot give you a second opinion over comments section, and without follow up questions and discussion. if you'd like, you can email my office to set up a zoom meeting with me - patientcare@tmjdentaldoc.com
Thank you for giving reply to my question. Now I am wearing night guard . But after using this getting somuch teeth sensitivity. Unable to drink water also. But it's correctly fitted to my lower teeth. Can you please suggest whether I am using correct night guard or not.
So if a night guard is no good for a patient suffering severe TMJ causing debilitating symptoms. What should you ask your dentist to make as I'm still in Australia with no help, I believe I need a daytime one but no one knows how make it only night guard so frustrating.😢
It’s not about making an appliance with a specific name. It’s about making it with the correct prescription built into it. This is unique to each individual and the dentist you work with must be skilled and experienced in finding it. Sorry :/ but I don’t have an answer for you
@@theTMJdoc You and everyone else got no answers while I'm declining to the point I can no longer stand, walk or balance to be a mum to my kids.😥 My drs said I'm already deconditioning now due to not getting any help. I cant help myself as I'm not a dentist who treat TMJ so are you just suppose to waste again to nothing this been going on 5yrs now.
@@theTMJdoc wish I could travel that far unfortunately being single mum with no family living in NSW makes it very difficult as feel this is my horrible life now, but I appreciate your kindness.
