I hear a lot of people say they wanted a Ruth spinoff, myself included. This must’ve been discussed in the writers room. They knew they had a more story tell with her and money to make. My question is, when this topic came up with the writers what led them to say no and kill her off? I’d have liked to be a fly on that wall.
It's a poor ending, rushed to many loose ends. Ruth dropped some clues to the sheriff, he is free to investigate. The may not be obliged to the cartel, but they rubbed them the wrong way and I wouldn't be surprised if they reconsider deal with Byrdes or just eliminate them. Their interference eliminated 2 bosses. They pissed off a lot of people, I can't see them being free and clear. I would have hoped that Mel at least informed Maya what he was doing or told her what he found. Too many questions for a so called series finale.
They have a lot of information about the cartel. And they just became a powerful family due to the deals they made. I’m not saying they are untouchable, but they are not in the same vulnerable position as before.
Sometimes... you run out of time. Chances you had may not have panned out like you were hoping. As is life. It felt grounded to me, and very fitting for the series. What death in this series has left you feeling satisfied or like it wasnt abrupt as hell? That feeling of emptiness and feeling of unease is kind of quintessential Ozark.
I'm stuck on how that car flipped like 5 or 6 times and no one got even a SCRATCH. And I wanted Wendy gone to and I though she would die in the car crash but sadly no
just try to understand why they did that, back in season 2 we had a flashback were wendy just got pregnant and the byrdes were innocent hard working people and got in a car accident and had a miscarraige and that accident is what damaged the family because they werent the same after that and in season 4 that car accident happened to them when they werent innocent they were bad and the premise of the show was the bad guys win and that car accident in season 4 united the family whilst the other one seperated it
Horrible ending. We really wanted to see at least one of the Byrdes' to answer for all of their crimes. I really would've preferred to see Wendy die than Ruth. Ruth was just so awesome.
Nah, not one byrde deserves to die, all she did was protect her family, Just that she was ruthlessly willing to protect Soo bad, anyone would do the same.
Well as for Ruth, it is expected for her death as in reality we can’t expect someone to survive after killing a cartel boss, As for the byrdes it seems like the show wanted to make em as a untouchable family with possible sequels 🤔
I didn't want Wendy just to die, that's a too nice and easy way out for her. She needs to suffer... a lot... like months of torture by mexican cartell.
Part 2 was so disappointing. Part 1 was so brilliantly done and it set such high expectations. I guess they just couldn’t figure out how to end things and it showed.
Anyone who doesn’t like the ending was hoping for a Hollywood ending rather than one true to the show. The Byrde’s ruin everything they touch. Everyone associated with them gets killed. They have unbelievable political power and even have leverage with the cartel where the cartel knows they are an asset. Marty & Wendy wanted to get out to save their kids because that’s what their kids wanted. Jonah killing the PI showed them that they hadn’t lost their kids. That was the final piece of the puzzle for them to stop running from what they had become and to finally embrace it, which is the final shot of the series
@@xxmoran92 Brilliantly said. The only things holding Wendy and Marty back were protecting the children's innocence and ensuring their kids' safety but when the final scene showed the kids are now inline with "doing whatever needs to be done to survive", Marty and Wendy smiled and fully EMBRACED THE DARKNESS they've been fighting against...most especially Marty. It's good to see people who appreciate series even when it subverts their expectations.
SPOILER WARNING (though I assume if you're watching this you've seen the finale). Big fan of the show but the ending was meh. I literally don't mind its dark nature but Jonah's final action makes absolutely no sense. They just didn't write the character that way. I know that thematically they meant to express that the Byrdes corrupted their kids but they DEFINITELY did not earn Jonah's loyalty like that. His willingness to kill for them may make for a shocking scene but it just doesn't track with the character. He's barely starting to process the fact that his mom killed Ben and now he's so loyal to them that he would kill a stranger to keep them together? Bad characterization here. He spent most of the season trying to get away from them. For him to turn into a loyal minion like this is insane.
agree 100%. I can see Jonah shooting a cartel member out to kill his family but not an innocent guy doing his job. It was too much of a character jump. And Charlotte just stands beside him as an accomplice with no qualms whatsoever. all of a sudden we have the family from hell, and it just wasn't congruent. Why did Jonah have to shoot Mel? they just take the ashes of him and get rid of them, however he did mention something about DNA everywhere, which might have meant the funeral home. Also Marty smiling at Jonah when he brings out the gun is weird. If he thinks Jonah is not going to shoot, then I can see the smile, but if he is expecting Jonah to pull the trigger then that makes him pretty evil....a good reason why we need to see their reaction after the shot.
@@sico6246 : Right? I can buy Wendy's reaction because they pretty much established her as a narcissistic sociopath. But Marty clearly is not happy with the toll it has taken on his children. There is no way he is smiling at this. That writing choice makes no sense and does not match the characters they established. I loved the show so much which is why I am so baffled by the laziness of this wrap-up.
very possible, of course they probably had brousies just not on their faces, wearing searbelt was big factor also as mentioned the car was best/safest van in america
Not every show needs a Hollywood ending. The ambiguous nature of the ending is perfect, coz as when Del said The world doesn't work like that. Wendy replied with Since when? Those lines explain everything. It's life
@@therickyzegeshow Most people HATE ambiguity because they don't have healthy enough imaginations to fill in the blanks. Reading comments here just proves it.
So many TV shows, movies games etc. struggle to get their ending right. It's quite simple to do; have the epic ending (Jonah shooting Mel) then spend 10 minutes or so wrapping up everything mentioned here. Show Ruth getting buried, the Byrds pin Chicago etc.
I think they wanted to leave the loose ends in case they wanted to do a sequel movie/series. But they aren't major loose ends just details, who will they get to launder their money, what happens if and when they make it to chicago, what happens to 3, those are things we can assume the answers to.
Literally. We don't need a storybook ending or every single question to be answered, but throw us a bone. It just feels unfinished and to mark the end of an entire series, that final scene was so anticlimactic. Give us some sort of closure, every show can't be The Sopranos.
@@TroubleOnTheWaters lol I agree with fully,we the audience want a clear ending at thesame time we want some sort of ifs and buts, still think a season 5 is imminent
@@kenthankgod2619 I believe it's the kind of ending that shows they'll never get out of the cycle of violence they started until they die or get thrown in jail. The show started with us rooting for them and hoping they'll survive and escape the crime world. But we ended up rooting against them and hoping for their demise. What this show wanted to do was to let us eventually feel how others in the show felt about a family ran by Wendy Byrde.
I don’t understand how all these shows that start out so well and continue well for years botch the ending. Ozark, Game of Thrones, etc. can writers not finish the job? They can be brilliant until the end..
The ending was good tbh, leaves room for thoughts and possibly a sequel, any series that ends the way we want quickly loses its nectar that attracts us, we need those vague endings to keep us glued.
Honestly I didn't care for the last half of the final season (episodes after Darlene and wyatt died). It did pick up and get better the last 2 episodes but the ending kinda sucked. I also didn't like the way Javi died. I mean that dude needed some serious humbling and instead got killed without even realizing what happened. Just wasn't satisfying IMO. I do feel like they rushed the ending and to have the PI guy in last scene was kinda dumb. I mean he was only in the show the past 1-2 seasons, and the bonder he had for the Byrds that motivated him more than his old dream job or money just didn't make much sense. And how dangerous he thought the Byrds were, he's gonna go to their house with the evidence to end their life and do so without any backup? smh
They originally wanted to do five seasons, but only ended up doing four. I'm thinking that there is a strong possibility they could be planning a movie with how opened ended they kind of left it. Here's to hoping, anyways 🤞
A movie without Ruth Langmore? Who would want to see that? It would have to be all flashbacks which would bog the story down. There's nothing left to see here. What, Camila finds out that the Byrd's had a hand in the death of Javi so she tries to kill them also? Do we really need to see that?
@@jasonleetaiwan OR maybe she didn't die 🧐 They pan away and yes she is clearly unconscious but no one ever verifies that she's actually dead. There's definitely wiggle room to resurrect the character. Three could have been there Camila could have left he could have gotten help. People have survived worse. Have some faith! Lol
@@samerdman2011 She was shot in the chest. Ozark isn't a show where people come back from being executed. The behind the scenes farewell confirms that she died in 2021.
@@jasonleetaiwan well when they pan away from Ruth after she had been shot, she was not shot again in the head which is what the cartel does to make sure. All we saw was Ruth getting shot in the chest and laying on the ground. Well we know it could’ve missed her heart. I feel that the show did not end at all. I really do feel that we’re gonna get something else that’s going to complete the story. And if we don’t, like in my previous comment, I feel if they really did kill Ruth it is the most unsatisfying and missed handled aspect of the entire show. And just to be clear, this is one of my favorite shows ever. So, I don’t have many complaints.
There's no way to do that without injuring Mel. Means Mel goes to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Gunshot wounds mean police report. Means Jonah gets charged with attempted murder. Keep Mel alive wouldn't be an option. Idk how they would've explained his dissapearance though
@@makrisaudio5638 I rewatched the scene a few times. It's been established that Jonah is a good shot. From the way Mel was holding the cookie jar, it's totally possible to shoot it without causing serious injury to Mel.
@@klausweasley You could be right, but keep in mind that shotgun could be spreadshot. Not to mention, even if the ashes fell on the ground would that really mean they'd be discarded as evidence?

An ending true to the series. Many shows lose their identity. Ozark did not
Got it spot on from most of the complaints I've seen people wanted either a happy or Hollywood ending and that was member this shows trajectory. Like you said the byrdes destroy everything they touch and its like they've finally embraced the darker side of them.
@@therickyzegeshow that's most people's assumption. I doubt it tho. Jonah will never shoot his beloved uncle's ashes. If at all, he just fired a warming shot
To me there is ZERO story left to tell, and I honestly don't see anything new they could do with a movie. It's an ambiguous ending, but that doesn't mean there's more to tell.
Why I rarely watch tv shows now - 4/5 seasons and then they pull the rug out from under you on the last episode and leave you disappointed - I understand you can't please everyone but please at least be logical
I felt personally betrayed and deeply irritated by this series finale. It’s like they Soprano’d us!!! It’s been 3 days and the agitation has not subsided. It made me feel glad that Netflix is losing subscribers!!!
How old are you? At some point in your life, you should be appreciating shows like this that have the balls to capture how unfair life is. If you want a happy ending every time, stick with Marvel/Disney contents.
I think they all died in the car accident. No way people crawl out of a crash like that with no injuries. Wendy had worse injuries when she purposely smashed her head against the car window!
Ya really complaining about the ending 🤣 Jason Bateman did that on purpose. You don't always have to give the audience what they want. He left us hanging on purpose in the event they want to revisit the show at a later date.
@@nont18411 if you were referring to the movie, in my opinion, wasn't needed. It was just to tie up some loose ends, which could of been left alone, but wasn't
What made no sense was Jonah hated his parents because all the bad shit they did then he just does a full 180 and kills mel which was so out of character. Ruth's death was expected but kinda sad and immediately overlooked. And also it doesn't seem like a good conclusion, now they just work for navaros sister instead of him which isn't any better than they were last season.
The ending was fine. What more do people want? If we question every single character on this show and their future - then how would it actually end? Jonah has held a gun a few times in this series, but never pulled the trigger until now in protecting his family. Ruth already knew her fate. Rachel would likely take control of the Casino - while still working for the FBI. That car crash was a huge wake-up call to bring them closer again, especially with the kids knowing the truth about their grandpa. And, Wendy made her peace with her kids. It's clear they will all be okay going back to Chicago. Mel was the last person they had to take care of. And, what's so wrong with the villain(s) getting away with the crimes they did? lol! A show this good was never going to leave us on a happy note. A damn good series, as well the acting, writing....and awesome soundtrack. #likeabyrdesetfree
I thought the ending was pretty good as it turns out. Of course there will always be unanswered questions. As people are eluding too, the Byrdes all kinda got away with it so perhaps a potential finale addresses that. The way it ended easily sets up the opportunity for new viewers to join in (with some narration) if they only get to see the movie. Just don't want it to be too late in coming if they decide to do it (like the Arrested Devlopment final few episodes).
At the end you just see Jonah cocking his rifle and then hear the shot as it fades to black. My wishful thinking was that he killed Wendy. Ruth pulled at my heartstrings more than any other character and should not have died that way. She was way too smart to get out of her vehicle to investigate the Cadillac SUV.
Lol What??? You were rooting for him to shoot his mother? Wtf And you think life wasn't fair to Ruth who was a thief, betrayed Marty, and murdered people? Her actions were dictated by her emotions, not any rationale. You're either messed up in the head, or you are completely devoid of conscience.
Wendy had it coming! This ending was evil just like the Byrds.I hope Racheal got something !l would hope Langmore would get even for Ruth’s demise .I would hope Jonah closed his eyes and took out Wendy
In my opinion this is where it should all end. Jona hints to the ending in the first season when he asks if he can kill starlings because they are an invasive species. I do think it's any coincidence they are called the byrds, they are the invasive species. They came, they destroyed and then moved on. I loved this show and miss it but I hope that's the end.
I feel like the ending was perfect...I mean if there was another season than it would be just all the events that already happend happen again. The Birds have already tried to get out of the cartel a multiple times and always failed so another season would just be them getting out again. And I believe Jonah kills Mel and why it's not shown is bc we've already seen death on the show and how it gets taken care of.The show already showed us that the Birds won't ever get out and that every dead body gets creamated and that new problems always come but the cartel takes care of them.Another season would just be us watching the same events happen again but with more new characters
I was hoping that when Marty went to Mexico to run things, he would put a hit on Wendy while he was down there. Wendy embraced that life while Marty wanted out. I feel that she will continue to get the Byrds involved in crime long after the cartel and the ending of the show.
It showed being calculative and ruthless is what gets you to stay alive in the crime world. That's why Marty gradually relinquished his role as the head to Wendy, and the show did a good job of constantly highlighting the shift in power by Wendy, Marty, the kids, Ruth, Rachael, Omar, Maya...even Nelson. BRILLIANT SHOW!
@@buckdraper303 Marty had an extremely valuable, rare skill and Wendy brought in extremely powerful connections. They knew how to shield themselves, think quick on their feet and lie to your face with a smile. They were hot footing it for five years but schemed their way through every time only to become richer and more powerful. They became untouchable.
I get iconic shows are extremely hard to end, however these shows consistently botch the landing 🤦🏼♂️. The only thing worse than a bad ending is a non-ending. I thought “there has to be at least 1 more episode, this couldn’t have been the finale?” Just way too many loose ends. Other than Ruth and Omar we don’t know what happened to anyone really 🤷♂️
U don't have to. Not every show will have a Hollywood ending? The ending just reiterates the cycle of violence will always continue no matter what, and the ambiguity is the whole point. That's life
There is a way that they could still bring Ruth back!! Remember several times we saw something happen but it was only in her mind! She could have just imagined that she was shot and killed! Nothing is impossible on TV!!!!
I thought maybe Three could appear out of nowhere, kill Camila, get Ruth to the hospital, Marty go back and run the cartel, and him and Wendy keeps expanding. Remember, she wanted to OWN the Midwest (greedy power hungry b*tch). I never liked Wendy. I loved how her father handled her!
ending to this was horrible if there aren't anymore seasons. and the show got so stupid near the end just making courtcases in a matter of days and doing all of this ridiculous stuff. lazy writing.
@@Somedude603 dude he wanted to make a deal lol. As for being caught, maya went behind the fbi. So it was a suprise to evryone. Maya knew where the airfield was when she met omar.
Actually I wondered if Jonah shot either Marty or Wendy because he learned of Ruth's death and possibly blames them. Maybe Netflix will be nice to us and give us a movie in the future
The Byrds getting to have the last "smile", Jonah completely stepping up to defend his parents, the sheriff doing nothing with what he knows, Camilla not doing anything to the Byrds for lying about Javi...come on! So many loose threads.
My questions are more like "What were Bateman and the writers thinking?" I loved this show after season 1...season 2 was up and down, but season 3 was AMAZING and won me back....But was really disappointed with the final two episodes of S4 and how they chose to end the series.
As a writer, I'll tell you it's clear Jonah shot Mel. The cut to black is symbolic of how the family has gone full dark and the curtain has fallen on the story. It's just better to end on not seeing the death but hearing it. Besides, Jonah shooting Mel completes his arc. As the youngest in the family, he is now beyond corrupt, and so they will never be good again. Successful and getting away with it into perpetuity. He also acquired a gun and learned how to use it back in season 1, and how his family has gone from being only adjacent to violence as a Chicago business family to their son behaving like a Snell. The work has finally tainted them so much they ARE the cartel. If anything, Jonah will grow to be the mob boss of the century one day. His last action, killing a cop, making his parents proud, is the perfect note to this horror story: A family achieves the family dream of wealth and security, by becoming fully evil. Yes, he shot Mel. There's no better way to make such a horrifying ending.
If Jonah had shot his mom after the definitive proof of what she did to his friend Ben, it would have made me a lot happier. It would have been a satisfying conclusion to my belief that crime doesn't pay and the priest's foreshadowing of God's warning to Wendy. I really hated her character because at least Marty had a bit of conscience and she didn't.
Could Ruth have survived somehow? Maybe she anticipated danger and had on a vest. I’d like see Three leave MO and start over somewhere. I’d like to see what Jonah does. I’d like to see Rachel succeed.
The ending was okay. Not great, but not terrible either. Ruth sealed her fate when she killed Javi, unfortunately. Jonah sealed the Byrd family’s fate by killing Mel. They’re never getting out. None of them.
First thing…..it’s Camila, not Camilia. Second, the show is over and the ending was meh. They could have done a “where are they now” at the end to explain this…..but I doubt if there will be a V2 or spin off.
Ruth might not be dead, it just showed her laying down but not dead. For all we know she’s probably playing possum. Ruth is very smart and street savvy so i won’t be surprised if she survived
The curse was her own doing. She tried to steal from Marty first thing, she betrayed Marty, was a murderer, and made all her decisions off her emotions. You don't need a special curse for her fate with all those characteristics.
@@genox3636 thank you. It's like ppl forget who she truly is. Wendy is just as bad but has an entire support system and political experience to back her up. Ruth alienated herself and was warned repeatedly. She would meet her end sooner or later.
Three was confirmed dead by Camila prior to Ruth's arrival. The creators of Ozark stated in A Farewell to Ozark, "All the Langmore's are now dead, " So that loose end is tied.
When Camila went to Ruth's place, it is assumed Three was there. I do not care if you agree or disagree. I think Season 4 ended on a low note, compared to the first three seasons. I did not say it, the director, writer said "All of the Langmore's are now dead" So ask them. Hey maybe this is not what we think, maybe a spin off will happen with Three, we learn he was not really a Langmore.
Terrible 2nd half to season 4. It didn't give us the closure we wanted and it seemed like it was leading towards a season 5 that we don't want to see because Ruth is dead. She was the best character, but the show has runs its course. Too bad it couldn't end as well as Breaking Bad.
I was thinking what about 3 they might kill him too and her family would be really over. She should have let it go because of him. Now I think he is alone.
