This windlass should have probably been replaced but I decided to rebuilt it instead. The rebuild was about 2 years before I edited this video and the windlass is still working fine.
Parts List:
Quick 1000 windlass gearbox:
O-Ring - 88x2mm
Bearings:
2x 40mm x 68mm x 15mm 6008-2rs1
1x 25mm x 47mm x 12mm 6005-UU
1x 17mm x 40mm x 12mm 6203-2RS
Oil seals:
2x 40mm x 52mm x 7mm
1x 25mm x 47mm x 7mm (there might be two of these)
Upper part of windlass only (these parts should be in the above list, but I realize I have some of the seal quantities wrong):
Seal:
2x 25x47x7mm lip seal
Bearing:
1x 25x47x12mm 6005

Alan, thank you for this video. Our 20 year old windlass died yesterday and you video was instrumental in helping us disassemble the gearleg to reveal water intrusion and significant coorosion in the casing around the upper seal. Luckily the gears are fine just the bearings and upper seal needed replacement. We sourced a good salvage housing and replacement motor as the internal issues cooked the windings. Cheers!

That windlass lasted another 4 years then it stripped the gears. I ended up buying a whole new windlass as the boat was a charter boat and it was pretty knackered.

Really nice job my friend . Personally i would have greased the main shaft as well , before refitting the winch drum , to prevent any chance of a seizure , should it be necessary to disassemble at a later date . I always use plenty of grease with a reassemble , maybe it could be argued too much , but then in these cases is there really , a too much .

The rebuild only lasted 3 years then the gears stripped on a particularly deep anchorage where we had all the chain out.

Hi thank you for the video, Very nice Job. i will need to do a similar job on my windless, is it possible know which place you brought the bearings and the seals. I will buy to take it with to Greece

@mohammedshariff2169 im in Australia, pretty much any bearing supplier will be able to supply these parts. I used BSC industrial supplies. They always have a good stock of parts.

Hi Alan, where are you located. I have a quick 1000w windlass that needs a new bearing a Yachtie said to just buy a new one. Boat is in Fiji, but live in Sydney.

Hi Alan, Thanks a lot for your video, I"m rebuilding an old vetus windlass which ran dry and disintegrated it's bearings and suffered quite a lot of corrosion so I'm not sure if will hold oil at all. So I wanted to check with you if yours survived with grease in stead of oil ? Thanks a lot, Greg

It lasted another 3 years before the gearbox 💩 the bed. Probably recommend cv joint grease if it can't hold oil

I dismantled a Quick DP3 similar to this one six months ago and ordered the shaft kit but only just got the kit from Quick. The kit only had one large seal one smaller seal (don't know what that was for) only one large circlip and one bearing with it's smaller circlips. I remember there was a seal above and below the shaft bearing. The kit is missing a large circlip and a large seal as far as I'm concerned. When you reassembled, what was it you first put in to the casing, you say bearing but was it a seal?

There is a seal just below the gypsy and a bearing below that. The gearbox has two bearings with a seal on the outside of each bearing.

If you dont mind me asking , what do you think of this unit and would you buy another? I have outgrown my Lewmar FishPro (700W) and was wondering if this would be an improvement (there is a used one on ebay)?

I replaced this windlass about 4 years later with another quick unit of the same size. The damage to the gears shortened the life. The new units gearbox is made of plastic. It bolted into the same holes which was important to me.

@alansailing1387 Appececiate your feedback. Yes, dropping in the same bolt holes would be a big advantage. That is why I bought a second Lewmar ProFish (a few years back), but I am a little reluctant to buy a third :). The first one failed due to an electric motor burnout. The second one failed because the system couldn't cope with a twisted chain and bent everything out of shape.

Hi Alan, great video. I have a favour to ask you. Is it possible that you could send me a list of the bearing and seals you ordered? Im in need of a rebuild but I need te have the parts on hand before I start the job. If you can help me that would be fantastic. My gearbox is a TG50 which looks like yours. Thanks mate.

Unfortunately we are on the boat, all that info is at home.

@@alansailing1387If you could send info when you are back it would be a fantastic help. Ill delay my restoration until then. Im in Greece and parts are not always easy to get by and once I open up the unit I cannot move anywhere. Thanks. Mads

Hi Alan, great video! It gave me some hope of saving my windlass. I have the same issue as Mads and I'm having a hard time finding spares. The kits offered by different vendors are not complete. I'd also need a new seal for the motor since the gear oil managed to find its way into the motor. Maybe because the oil was diluted with water and got less viscous. I don't know... Anyways, I'd appreciate if you could point me in the right direction when it comes to spares. Cheers, Nic

@@nortan100 The one on the input shaft on the gearbox is a 47x25x7 but a 47x25x8 will fit as well.

@nortan100 I bought all the spares from a bearing supply shop. The bearings and seals used in this windlass are generic parts. Just try and avoid bearings made in China. I try to use bearings made in Japan or Germany.
