Please read the full description for links to the tools and consumables I have used in this project.
This week my Wife and I went on a date night to our local axe throwing venue, this is something I have always wanted to do.
It turns out we really enjoyed ourselves and the friendly competition that it brought, we are looking at doing it more and decided that a target at home would give us the edge ( ba dum tsh) in the competition.
This target is made from 150mm wide planks from B&Q that are 25mm thick, some OSB and a 2x4. If you would like plans for this project please let me know down below.

That looks so fun! Busting it out at parties may not be a good idea, but still fun.

Definitely fun, the venue we were playing at was a strict no alcohol zone. This comes out at the beginning of the BBQ but goes away once we have a beer or two 😅

When I was in Whitehorse a few weeks ago I tried axe throwing for the first time and it was much harder than it looked! The cool thing they did is they mounted a cut-off cookie from a tree as the target. One of the kids ended up hit the same spot a few times in a row and it split the cookie and it fell off the target. It was fun to see. Thanks for sharing 👍🍻

I really struggled with the distance Vs power, too much power and you over rotate, too much distance and you under rotate, my original plan was to use a tree slice but I couldn't get my hands on one. Thank you for your comment ✌️

If you ever have a chance I highly recommend to give it a try, if your at the next Makers Central the place we were at isn't too far away from the NEC (if it's in Birmingham again)

Thank you for watching, I haven't got plans unfortunately but it's fairly simple. the lumber that I used for the target boards is 31 inches long, 1 inch thick and 13 inches wide. unfortunately I've gotten rid of the target so I can't even measure it for you. sorry.

As I predicted, that looks like a ton of fun! I have to ask, how does the scoring work and how long does a board last before it has to be replaced. BTW, your wife kicked your backside. She is clearly the better thrower. I suggest you never do anything to make her angry! LOL
@DeanMakes
@DeanMakes 4 года назад
It's great fun 👍🏻. As for scoring the bull's eye is worth 5, the next ring is 3 points and the furthest ring is only 1 point, the targets at the throwing place have two red dots that are worth 1 point. However when you are on your last axe of your turn (you get 5 throws) the little red dots are worth 7. My wife was really good at it, too good in fact, so naturally I built this to get better and crush her next time 🤣. The target should last for a couple of weeks but you've seen my aim, it could last a few years 😂. I've made it modular Sonu can change out the boards as they need it, I get 2 out of a 8ft length which costs £5

So axe restoration video next followed by a series on forging your own?
@DeanMakes
@DeanMakes 4 года назад
That's a brilliant Idea, I really want to forge my own hatchets but I feel I haven't got the skills, I'm thinking about going on a course at Alex Pole ironworks 😁

do you plans for this ?
@DeanMakes
@DeanMakes 3 года назад
Hi, Thank you for watching, unfortunately I do not. I kind of built it as I went. If you are interested in making your own version the backboard for the target is 2.5ft wide and 4ft long, I used 1 inch thick pine for the board that the axe hits that were roughly 6 inches wide. Not too long after this video I remade the tripod that held the target as my garden is very uneven and it kept falling over, This summer I plan to remake this project but will make plans available and write an instructable for anybody wanting to build their own. sorry for the wall of text in this comment, thank you for watching and commenting, Dean

Hey, honestly how often does that target fall off the base? It looks like when the axe hits it, it almost falls off each time. Thanks!
@DeanMakes
@DeanMakes 3 года назад
Hey, it fell off a couple of times especially if I was a bit to "hard" with throwing the axe and it over rotated. Not long after this video I redesigned the stand to be more of a long term solution, unfortunately I didn't record this but there's a few pictures on my Instagram account. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, it means a lot.

How many 8ft boards is it I am guessing 3?
@DeanMakes
@DeanMakes 3 года назад
Yeah, I brought mine as 5ft so I ended up with 6 boards, as for a list of materials I used a 3/4 inch thick sheet of OSB for the backer board ( That was 4ft tall and 2.5ft wide) . The stand was made out of one 10ft long 2 x 4 with some offcuts to hold the target on the tripod. I hope that helps. Thank you for watching.

Did you find 1 layer of boards was enough?
@ianfrood
@ianfrood 3 года назад
Also how did you sharpen your hatchets? Did you just use a normal sharpening stone? Sorry for all the questions.
@DeanMakes
@DeanMakes 3 года назад
@@ianfrood I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner, I've only just received the notification for this comment. One layer of boards was fine for this target but I did replace them after about 4 months of use. as for sharpening the hatchets, I ran them over a chisel sharpening stone to give them a little bit more sticking power, thanks again for your interest in this project.
