In this video I will be showing you how to build your own Lawn Leveling tool for any of your lawn leveling projects. Lawn leveling tools can be expensive to buy, and if your on a budget then why not build one yourself out of PVC pipe.
Plus, in my last video I said I would be picking a comment and the winner gets to name my channels mascot, did I pick your comment? I also have a mystery box sent to me by LazyLawns, let's open it up and find out what's inside.
Here is a list of the materials you will need to build your own leveling tool:
3 X 10 ft Lengths of 1 inch PVC
4 X 1 inch L connectors
15 X 1 inch T connectors
1 X 1 inch endcap
Hacksaw & PVC Glue
Measuring Tape & Pencil
Large Lawn Leveling Tool:
1 X 5 ft Long
4 X 1.5 ft Long
6 X 6" Long
2 X 8" Long
4 X 11" Long
4 X 3" Long
6 X 5" Long
Small Lawn Leveling tool:
1 X 5 ft Long
2 X 1.5 ft Long
10 X 8" Long
2 X 3" Long
4 L Connectors
7 T Connectors

One modification I did was to glued a short male pipe connector on the leveling tool handle connector and a female connector on the handle. That way I can remove the handle for easier storage. A screw cap on the tool will keep the sand inside during storage as well.

Could I maybe make a suggestion? If instead of using sand you use water (1 litre = 1 kilogram) thereby you can adjust the weight according to your need/strength, then when you're done, empty it and store it for the next usage. Water always finds it's own level, which means that the weight is evenly distributed. So, fill it via the handle and drain it the same way. Just an idea that I'd like to put out there. Cheers, your concept is brilliant and I'm definitely going to try it out. With water. 😉
@TheLawnDaddy

Thx for the suggestion, I'm going to be modifying the big leveling tool i built and may try hooking up some quick connects. If i do fill it with water and it works then ill be sure to mention your comment in a follow up video.

This is actually an interesting concept with the sand. However, I would make 2 modification, putting a threaded cap facing up for filling the sand after everything is glued and separating the swivel for the hand to prevent sand from going into the swivel.
@joshslaughter4748
@joshslaughter4748 4 года назад
You could probably add a PVC garden hose attachment so you can fill it with water instead of sand, then drain it when you're ready to store it.

I was wondering how using round pipe instead of square tube would do. Do you think it makes a big difference? I'm gonna make one, but Im not sure what to use. I have some round conduit and I have some angle iron from old bed frames. Any thought on which would be better? I should also add, the round conduit is galvanized metal, so I'm just wondering if it makes a difference in the use of the tool.
@TheLawnDaddy

The angle iron will def work, I used PVC pipe cause I wanted to use something that everyone could use and have access to.

Do you have any issues with the sand inside shifting around and causing uneven weight distribution? I wonder if maybe filling a few of the pipes with cement and letting it dry inside before gluing it all up wouldn't be better.
@TheLawnDaddy
@TheLawnDaddy 4 года назад
I thought about it but I was worried that the PVC would crack as the concrete started to harden...I have found that the sand doesnt cause any uneven weight.
@trevor-bd4kt
@trevor-bd4kt 3 года назад
Im thinking about using 1.5" pvc instead will fill with water from top of handle with drainable screw on cap. U think 1.5" would be too heavy? Want some durability if I build. Also I was thinking that lawn levelers had sharp down facing edges unlike the round pvc?
@TheLawnDaddy
@TheLawnDaddy 3 года назад
I think 1.5 would get really heavy, I filled the one I made full plus the handle and it was really heavy...mine was 1"

@@TheLawnDaddy ok then I'll stick with 1". Thanks!!

I like your ideas! I’ve been thinking of how I could build one out of PVC and then I come across your video. In your comments you list all the measurements for the large and small and for the small you included how many connectors but you didn’t for the large. If I counted correctly it’s still only 4 elbows but 15 Ts. Please correct me if I’m wrong. And we will never agree on football and I hope this doesn’t mean you won’t reply but I’m a life long Fins fan.
@TheLawnDaddy
@TheLawnDaddy 4 года назад
Lmao, you are correct on both points...The Big leveling tool has 4 elbows and 15 T's and I say "SQUISH THE FISH" I hope BUF can improve even more this season and I think Miami will be better than many think. I think we can both agree that bye bye Tom Brady and down with the Pat's.

I have to say your second version that's slightly smaller I think that it's turned the wrong way if you turn it sideways then the beams that are in the middle will also be leveling the dirt the way that you're moving it back and forth near the end of your video it's only using the outer tubes to do the leveling and the other two are just basically sliding forwards and backwards doing nothing I would suggest turning that 90° and reinstalling the stick if possible also the round tubes are not going to level or move the dirt as much as you would like I would rethink the design maybe slicing some cuts into the bottom and then installing some thin sheet metal 4 mm sticking out of the tube should do the trick it would really help move the dirt a little bit more
@TheLawnDaddy
@TheLawnDaddy 2 года назад
You are correct about it being the wrong way, I noticed it after I filmed it. I turned it 90° shortly after putting the video out. The point of the design was simply to give the average person a more affordable option, it may not be 100% perfect but it works pretty well. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

It's lawn growing season now. Is there any video of your lawn leveling tool leveling? I just leveled (and reseeded) my front and back yard (about 5,000 sq ft). I sold my kidney to buy a metal levelawn and I have to admit it did a much better job than a (lightweight aluminum head) landscape rake. Part of the reason it worked so well was the weight of the (stainless steel) head, which helped drag the dirt at one level. Also, the box shape of the steel bars in the head helped to pull the dirt. I'd have to believe that a lightweight and round PVC pipe rake would tend to float over the dirt. Maybe if the PVC had sand in it, it would help? I'm not trying to insult your rake. I'd be curious to see the PVC rake level out topsoil or sand over a yard. Thanks.
@TheLawnDaddy

10:06 mark you can see I filled the level with sand...I've made a few modifications to the smaller level I made, I will do a video soon showing it in action. Thx for the input.

Surely when you have your soil/sand etc piled up on your lawn you need some weight to shift it.? This "Contraption" doesn't seem to carry any weight whatsoever. Sorry but I don't think it'll work. Nice idea though PS: itd be great to see it in action. 👍

Your handle is way too short. You are not maintaining your lumbar lordship. Repetitve flexion overworks the muscles but more importantly increases the compressive force in the intervertebral disc. Compression with flexion causes the disc to migrate posteriolaterally - towards nerve roots. Try a 80 inch handle and don't so readily choose to bend (flex your lumbar spine ) as your first choice movement pattern. -Dr.Oliver
