How do you test capacitors for capacity, leakage and ESR? Find out in this quick one minute tutorial.
Additional info not covered in the video:
ESR is equivalent series resistance. It’s the type of DC leakage in a capacitor that is the equivalent of adding a resistor in series. This can often be measured in circuit with low voltage.
Parallel leakage is the equivalent of adding a resistor in parallel with the capacitor. This is typically measured out of circuit at a voltage matching the rated voltage for the capacitor.
The larger paper wax capacitors in vintage equipment are usually just measured for parallel leakage.
With lower voltage capacitors found in solid state equipment, ESR becomes an important measurement.
Measuring either type of DC leakage in a capacitor is important as a capacitor’s job is to block DC, not pass it.
About One Minute Tutorials:
I often include short tutorials in my videos. But they’re hard to find when you just want a quick answer to a question. So I’ve created this One Minute Tutorial series:
• Short snippets from my videos.
• A quick lesson without a lot of fuss.
