Used to see little hills like this at my local games workshop all the time, was amazed at how light they where, never would have thought it was just made of foam. Great video :D
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby Год назад
Thank you Ashley. They are very light, even finished with extras on there, they weigh almost nothing. Might need to push some weights into the underside to make them more stable because of this. The large one isn't too bad, but I think the sigh of a losing player could almost move those small ones across the table :) Cheers for watching and commenting.

The cracks were a great addition and not something I've ever seen any one do before. Thanks for sharing! And taking the time to make another piece just to show off the crack process.

Thanks mate. I want to blame the camera for the footage being lost, but honestly it was probably me forgetting to hit record the first time around.

Good old bunnings xps foam. I need to figure out how to apply this to hex terrain for battletech. Good video though, thanks. Fun fact: Buy a 20kg bag of road base for like 10 bucks from bunnings, and a large sieve. You'll never have to spend another cent on rock basing material ever again, all you have to do is sift out the various grades (gravel, fine gravel, and ballast) then give it a wash to get the dirt off, and you have about 15kg of basing material for 10 bucks.

Only in Australia would making wargaming terrain come with a "mind the wildlife" warning.
@RFDHobby

haha, the thing is, I really do have to watch out for all of those things when I'm foraging for materials :) It's crazy out there in the warmer months, and a bite from any of them will at the least give you a pretty bad day. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Very good tutorial, especially the wet-in-wet blend and drybrushing to make the rock seem quite life-like. Whenever I do something similar, somewhere at the halfway point, it looks super awkward, but as you said, it all comes together at the end. One thing that i would suggest though, is sticking down larger debris first and then going with smaller and smaller bits that are just sprinkled on top of the still exposed glue.
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby Год назад
Thank you for the comment. I wasn't sure about the order to put the rocks down, and ended up doing it both ways during this project, and you're absolutely right, better to have the larger debris down first. Cheers mate.

I really like the carving style you used in that first hill. The horizontal slices help create the effect of strata. I’m so sorry that the greenies have taken good xps foam from the general population and hobbies. It’s a shame, seeing as how their “alternatives” often don’t work or create the same (or worse) “carbon footprint” as what they replace.
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby Год назад
Yep, I wish I had known it was coming, I would have stocked up on the yellow foam before it disappeared. But I'm glad this worked out, at least I know I can do something with the couple of sheets I still have haha. Thanks for the comment mate.

I've never even seen this foam in the wild. I found some blue stuff through foam sales in W.A. but my local Bunnings doesn't stock anything
@RFDHobby
@RFDHobby Год назад
I think there are different laws in place depending on your state determining what foam is available to us here in Australia. I looked up a foam distributor recently online and they seemed to have different options depending on state of delivery. Ever since the yellow XPS foam went off-sale it's been really hard to get anything decent. I've ordered some foam online, but usually I can still only get small, thin sheets. I've used the Army Painter Gamemaster Foam sets, they're good as well, but again, they're thin sheets. Sorry I can't be more helpful here, but I'll post something if I find any kind of decent solution for us here. Take care and all the best.

Hey, nice to see you back! Great tutorial on some quick terrain. I find the "lets make some scatter terrain/basic terrain" helpful. Especially for people new to the hobby and just needed something to make the table look nice. Plus, you can never go wrong with some basic hills and scatter terrain. Have to agree I prefer my trees being separate from the rest of my terrain. Lets be pile them in to make forests or spread them out for some light cover.

I'm in QLD and I still can't find the yellow Knauf stuff anywhere, I'm still looking though, so hopefully it turns up. I've only got this sh*t from Bunnings. It actually turned out pretty good for this project, but there is a texture to this foam that remains visible a lot of the time, I found the yellow stuff was way more clean.
