Did you know that when it comes to discovering your own artistic style, the QUANTITY of your artwork matters more than the QUALITY? We develop our styles by making lots and lots of artwork! This warm up is a fast, fun way to make 18 tiny paintings in one sitting. And they are ADORABLE.
You can use any colors and materials you choose for this exercise, the important part is to experiment with putting different patterns, colors, and textures together. This exercise can be used on its own as a collage warm up, a way to try out new combinations of colors/patterns, as an art journal page, and *BONUS* can be easily packed up for travel art.
I’ve previously done this with taped-off squares but never just tracing squares - this idea came from artist Kellee Wynne (www.kelleewynnestudios.com) and (at the time I'm posting this) she has a FREE grid journal course on her website (www.colorcrushcourses.com/grid)!
Materials used: sketchbook, collage paper, scrap paper, Stabilo Woodies, water soluable graphite, FW. acrylic ink, and a glue stick.

I have never used an art journal. For me, ideas percolate in my busy brain until it's time for them to be "born" on stretched canvas. However, I'm trrrrrrying to make small collages in my mixed-media art book. It's scary for me because my art has a very ordered look, and I seem to be paralyzed with fear when attempting to create a collage in the way that you do. That fear needs to be dealt with! If only I didn't have an obsession with being perfect! 😢
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
Who says you have to make collages like mine? You do you 🤗 Of course, if you WANT to practice loosening up and being less strict with you’re art making, then keep showing up and doing it even when it feels uncomfortable. You’ve got this! ❤️❤️❤️

Just subscribed. Love how you explain your process and specifically the reasoning for doing these grid paintings. I’ve been doing them a lot lately but could never get the right words for explaining it to others. Haha. You are right- the practice does help so much. I was impressed with how you applied the acrylic ink with the applicator so seamlessly. I like the idea of applying it that way. Thank you for sharing!!!!

I love these. I have been wanting to do them! Question: do you cut your collage papers smaller for your larger collages? I know that this video was using small pieces that were left over the last video I saw you do, you used pieces no bigger than your hand. Many of my collage papers are 8 to 12 inches. Or even 18 x24” Do you think it’s better to cut them down before knowing how they will be used? I realize that I have smaller pieces I could lay them on the collage and think what would work best. My papers are in folders, envelopes, & plastic bags….Not organized.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 10 месяцев назад
Interesting question - I don’t cut anything down until I’m planning to use it. I don’t always use everything that I do cut down (thus my small and tiny scrap collections 😆), but I rarely if ever cut anything down arbitrarily.

Looks like so much fun. Never tried something like this. Do these become ideas for larger pieces? Thank you so much for sharing.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
It really is great fun! I don’t use them directly for larger pieces, but I do think the more experimenting I do, the more creative all of my work becomes. It’s more of an indirect influence ☺️

I love following you! Question. I’m new to art and finding time to practice is a job…. And essential. I don’t understand why there is a movement to these warm up exercises which would take up my practice time? I also don’t get how these journal entries translate to canvas /larger art panels?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
Hi Susan - thank you!! ❤️ I’m a firm believer in trying new things to see how they feel - if they don’t feel good or add something positive to my process, I don’t pursue them. I’d encourage you to try the warm up exercises and see if they help you find new paths into the work that you create. For example, adding collage if you typically work with paint only, or adding new colors that you wouldn’t ordinarily use. For me, warm up exercises often turn into successful paintings that I continue to work on. For me, grids like those in this video serve as a sandbox to play in. A way to try 18 different combinations, compositions, or materials in 30-60 minutes instead of spending that time on larger canvases. It helps me narrow down what I want to pursue in a larger format. I can quickly see if I like the way the color palette combinations look across a tiny body of work. So the color palette testing I could easily take with me and apply to larger works. I don’t try to recreate any of the tiny paintings on a larger scale, but the tiny grid helps inform me of specifically what I like so I can use that information in the future. Does that help? ❤️❤️😂

@@jackieschomburgart Another question. Can you use any kind of medium paper scraps ( watercolor , mixed media , magazine paper )in collage? The mixed media paper is soooo thick!
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
Sure! You can use any paper you’d like to use - but with some thinner papers you may get wrinkles in it from moisture if you attach the collage to it with glue or medium. If you use a glue stick or tape it won’t wrinkle, but then it’s not going to be archival or stand up to the rest of time if you decide to sell it. Everything is a trade off 🤗

One question can the crayons be sealed when you're finished. I dont want to use them because I dont want to do all that work and have them be rubbed away?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
I’ve never had an issue with the crayons. I do like to seal the water solvable ones if I don’t want them blending in with the paint. If you wanted to seal the water soluble crayons without them smearing, you could use a fixative spray.
