There used to be a zoo at the end of those woods, in what is now Rowe close. The old zoo house is still there, it apartments now but was derelict when I was younger, a class place to play. Theres a very short video on youtube if you search Bideford zoo. Cheers for the vid mate.
That 2nd patch looked really good mate, might be worth doing, as you say, a couple of hours cook up and chill out, see if there's any passing dog walkers and the like, then plan a camp out. Looks promising though for sure
