@@elgalloflyfishinglodge7908 How to pick up sink tip or WF line quickly with heavy fly and cast at distance with only intial backcast. Also your tracking in this video looks abiut 45* angle or less, is this typical for heavy flies when shooting more line?

Great looking double haul man! Between the double haul and my stripping basket my fly casting has improved tremendously over the past couple years. Do you ever use a stripping basket? If you haven’t I highly recommend trying one for longer cast situations. The one from Ahrex is the one that I have found to be the best.
@jjm4643
@jjm4643 10 месяцев назад
Just fished the Ahrex, from shore, and don't love it. I think because when I strip the fly in a I have a tendency to make a log strip , extend my elbow and throw the line behind me (boat). may not be an Ahrex problem as much as a technique problem.

@elgalloflyfishinglodge7908 8 месяцев назад
In saltwater you really want to concentrate on keeping that elbow tucked in. It is pretty hard on the body when you don't; particularly when casting bigger rods. Also, it is better for setting hooks. Good luck brother, and thanks for the comment!

yeah i like the video. recently picked up another 2nd hand 8# for tarpon & snook in my area. during this time of year in the back country, the water is dirty and you need bushy flies or poppers so fish can find your fly. So....with all that said I go back to the local park to find what line works best for the conditions mentioned. settled on a rio obs w/ short intermediate tip. works great for tossing under mangroves and gets down a foot or so. for me its important to have a plan before I go practice casting at the park. am i just practicing my fundamentals or am I seeing how a line casts with different head lengths and grain weights for the fly I'm gonna be using for fishing? thx for the rant.
@elgalloflyfishinglodge7908
@elgalloflyfishinglodge7908 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, and for the question. No problem at all about the rant!😀 the purpose for your practice session is up to you, but I would advise to work on only one thing at a time. Having said that, I feel as though you can accomplish both tasks of practicing fundamentals, and testing equipment at the same time. It is actually very revealing about fly rod/line combos to do some simple drills, like the 11-1 drill, or the various loop drills. Fly casting has a lot of variables, and it takes an extended amount of time and effort to dial everything in, but it is a fun process! Good luck with your fishing amigo, and if I can be of further assistance, just reach out!

@jjm4643 10 месяцев назад
Agree 100%, it takes a lot of time to dial everything in. Rod/line/leader/fly - many combos. Last weekend I tried different leader formulas with the same fly line and same fly, trying to get optimum turnover. @@elgalloflyfishinglodge7908

That is a big fat NYAP. Very wide, like casting a parachute! Awesome when it is on the water for anything that eats baitfish aggressively. Thanks for the question!

Ha! It is always something, right? I am sure that you do well, but there is always room for improvement. I learn new things in Fly Fishing all of the time, that’s one of the reasons that I love it. Constant growth is what I like best. Do you have anything in your casting that particularly frustrates you?
@self-taught_angler
@self-taught_angler 9 месяцев назад
This is too much effort for sub-100ft cast. Just like you said, it is just physics. If you can get a line with more aggressive shooting head taper, use a longer rod and smaller fly, you can achieve the same distance with 10th of the effort and without any false cast. The rod should work for you not your arms or body. In a regular fishing trip, after casting like this 20 times, the arms and the back will start hurting. Also, I don't see the point of casting a popper straight out 90ft.
