The hook knifes, you lay them flat in the stones or the strops, without angle at all?
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 6 месяцев назад
The inside, yes. But outside at an angle matching the edge grind angle.

Hi, I really like the shape of that hook knife you have closest to the camera. What brand is it/where did you get it? I’m looking for a hook knife for scooping tighter curves.

If you are referring to the really small hook, that one is from OCC Tools (aka Kryshak carving tools now) and is the #7 spoon gouge. kryshakcarvingtools.com/spoon-gouge-7/

Can the polishing compound applied to the strop dry out?
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 2 года назад
If left next to a heat source I can see it drying out, but I don't find it necessary to change mine but every 6 months or so.

So your honest opinion, is it worth it? I'm having trouble stropping my hook knife Thanks

Where did you buy your flexible leather strop?

It was from beavercraft

The Beavercraft hook knife has a large bevel on the outside. The inside is flat. So do you just sharpen the outside edge and only remove the burr from the inside?
@CarvingisFun

Yep, pretty much

Have you used a cone stone for the spoon knives? I just bought one and can't find any hand tutorials for it.
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun Год назад
I've seen them around, but never really used them much myself. you only really get a short stroke length that is close the to curvature of your hook knife. Still, they are useful for getting into certain shapes if needed.

@@CarvingisFun I did just use it the first time. Work nice.

why not use your hook knife to carve the groove into a wood block, then put your sandpaper or strop on that block? why buy one?
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun Год назад
It is indeed a practical option, but this one does have more function to it too.

when will you be carving the gnome?
@CarvingisFun
@CarvingisFun 2 года назад
Not 100% sure yet, but it is on the list to do. I'm still trying to figure out a good and simple design I can make a tutorial on. I should have some time this weekend to further develop the final design, if I don't get called into work again at least.
