Peter, I had to laugh at 2:15 when you threw the chopped piece of Acer away and said "forget it! I've got enough!". It just seemed so funny after years of watching you do air layers and saying "I'm going to air later this...n that..". Good for you mate, let your hair down a bit 😂👏👍

Hi Peter your energy is so amazing for your age as I am more or less the same age and don’t have half the energy you have, there are some amazing maples to be had when you are able to dig them up and make quality bonsai trees. I am following in your footsteps and planting seedlings in the ground, within one growing season they have put on so much growth as compared to the seedlings in pots, I also planted the seeds from my full size field maple in the ground and they are doing well compared to the potted maples seeds. BTW I watched a video tour of Dan Robinson’s very large garden I am sure you know him,some trees over a thousand years old, a point he made that surprised and shocked me , he has never repotted any of his trees, he does explain why but I will leave that, I would urge your viewers to seek out his videos, his trees and their setting are amazing. Thank you Peter for your videos which help a lot of people to enjoy bonsai.

Peter, I love seeing you walking around the nursery day or night in all weathers; what you love keeps you young. I first came to Herons in the mid 80s shortly after you came up from your old place. I bought a larch from you, and we were in the old greenhouse that later blew down in the Great Storm. I also recall around that time you showed me the ‘galleys’ of your next book. You also came up to our club in Colchester a couple of times too. Happy days. R. Pollock

Hi Peter, my approach to trim trees is just like yours, and I’m glad I wasn’t doing something wrong. My wife would yell at me when trimming trees, she would say who do you think you are “Edward Scissorhands” I’ve also learned so much from you and your videos…thank you. I’ve done over 10 successful air layerings from watching you and can’t stop now. I do have a question about field growing the trees. I have two areas where I’ve planted my potted trees as a nursery to one day dig up and plant elsewhere on property. Being so close together I would suppose to just dig down and then cut all roots outside of the rootball area. I’m sure the trees roots are all mixed together now, about 5 years in the ground. Will you be showing this process in an upcoming video? Thanks again for all your help

I don't believe you use a wireless clip on microphone, do you? I think that could help with at least being able to hear you speak when a plane flies over.. I don't really mind them either when watching your videos, but if you still want to do something about it, I think the wireless mic could help.

Instead of air layering can you not grow roots from the cuttings? I always reproduce my Bougainvillea by just sticking the cutting in a glass vase until it roots. It has a 50/50 success rate for forming roots.

Can i cut the trunk and leave no leaves? Will it survive?
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 Месяц назад
You shouldn't do that as it is always better to leave some leaves on the tree to pull the sap up. However - if you find yourself in that situation the leafless trunk will produce new shoots.

@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 Месяц назад
As far as I am aware 'Mountain Maple' or 'Yama Momiji' is the term used by the Japanese to describe any Acer palmatum that is not named as a specific cultivar. I may be wrong but from all the research I have done and from speaking to Japanese maple growers I have met - this is what Yama Momiji means.

"Quick method to make maple bonsai" ... "These trees have been in the ground for at least 10 years". Definitely admire Peter, but it seems a little bit contrary to say this is "quick". I'd love to see Peter do a trip to a common nursery and show his process for choosing material suitable for bonsai like most of us do. Much to my dismay, I don't exactly own a bonsai nursery with trees growing for decades such that I can just dig up a perfect specimen. :(
@mchlbk
@mchlbk Месяц назад
Ten years is indeed nothing when you consider the size of the trunks. Had they been growing in pots they would have been nowhere near as thick. You can't hurry nature more than that, and that in itself is a valuable lesson for humans.
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 Месяц назад
When you think that there are some bonsai hundreds of years old - ten years is nothing. It's all relative. That is why they say bonsai teaches you patience.

@@peterchan3100 heh, sorry, meant no disrespect. I don’t personally have access to much land, but I do what I can. I have a handful of field grown trees in the works, however most of my collection are just garden center trees. One is a cheap alberta spruce, inspired by you. It fooled someone into thinking it was ~100 years old, so thank you! My favorites in my collection are the neglected nursery stock because they’re often overgrown/untamed. It would be relatable to me if you were to go on a garden center expedition to find some rejects, the diamonds in the rough, and give them your touch. I appreciate your videos, and wish you the best!!
