At the beginning of August I got the opportunity to give the latest Nikon mirrorless camera a hands on test out in the wild, aka Rietvlei Nature Reserve, our favourite urban reserve. The camera performed quite admirably given it was my first time shooting on the new Nikon mirrorless systems. Although it is a mid range camera it felt quite hefty in my hands and outweighs even my A1. I was really impressed with the ease to set it up and the video quality and stabilisation while shooting 4K60 hand held.
There were two negatives for me. The 24MP does not allow much room to crop. I may well be too used to the 50MP of the A1. One of the direct competitors to the Z6iii would be the Sony A7iv which now has a 33MP sensor. The second issue I faced was the autofocus tracking. The camera does have the 3D autofocus tracking from the more expensive Z8 and Z9 bodies but I found that it missed a few shots from time to time and I also did not know when it was missing focus without the indication of what it was tracking. The 3D tracking is also available only in the wide or full screen autofocus and I could not get a smaller tracking option such as center point or spot with tracking.
